Dear Parents/Carers & Community Members
This week saw the return of all our Year7 students who were impacted by COVID last week. It was great to see their smiling faces and eagerness to be back at school and reconnect with their peers and teachers. The school community is not the same when our youngest students are absent, the energy and excitement they bring makes the school feel vibrant and more energised.
Celebrating and Respecting Cultural Diversity
This week as a nation we celebrated our countries cultural diversity (Harmony week). Our cultural diversity is one of our greatest strengths and is at the heart of who we are. It makes Australia a great place to live and is an integral part of our identity. When celebrating our cultural diversity, we can reflect and remember how we have learnt and grown as a nation.
All people who migrate to Australia bring with them some of their own cultural and religious traditions and collectively these traditions have enriched our nation. While also remembering and celebrating the oldest continuous culture of our first Australians.
Celebrating our multi-culturalism is also about RESPECT a key point in our school’s Mission
‘Inspired by the GOSPEL VALUES’ and the practical examples of St Mary of the Cross Mackillop and Clare of Assisi our Mission is to…
RESPECT – Creation
- By showing loving concern for each and every person
- By respecting each of God’s creatures and caring for the environment
- By celebrating our uniqueness
We are all different - different personalities, different backgrounds; different looks; different skills and abilities, this is who we are and makes us unique. As communities and as individuals we have the right to be treated with respect and treat others with respect. I am a strong believer that respect is not just earned it is given in the first place.
Below are some statistics about Australia's diversity from the ABS census data 2016:
- nearly half (49 per cent) of Australians were born overseas or have at least one parent who was
- we identify with over 300 ancestries
- since 1945, more than 7.5 million people have migrated to Australia
- 85 per cent of Australians agree multiculturalism has been good for Australia
- apart from English, the most common languages spoken in Australia are Mandarin, Arabic, Cantonese, Vietnamese, Italian, Greek, Tagalog/Filipino, Hindi, Spanish and Punjabi
- more than 70 Indigenous languages are spoken in Australia.
Unfortunately, we were unable to celebrate Harmony Day this week. Our celebration will occur on Wednesday, 30 March with a ‘Wear It Orange Day’ out of uniform day.
Prayer for Ukraine
As we celebrate our cultural diversity, it is important to remember the people of Ukraine as war continues. We take time to pray and reflect on the devastation and destruction of their country and way of living.
Loving God,
We pray for the people of Ukraine,
for all those suffering or afraid,
that you will be close to them and protect them.
We pray for world leaders,
for compassion, strength, and wisdom to guide their choices.
We pray for the world
that in this moment of crisis,
we may reach out in solidarity
to our brothers and sisters in need.
May we walk in your ways
so that peace and justice
become a reality for the people of Ukraine
and for all the world.
Amen
Finally, as we come toward the last few weeks of term, I take the time to say thanks to all our staff, parents, carers and community members for your continued hard work and support in these COVID times. Let’s continue to work together and support each other to ensure we get to the end of term safe and healthy.
Regards
Mr Phil Gibney
Acting Principal

Please advise either by phone: 6552 3300 or email: admin@tareesc.catholic.edu.au if you would like to attend.
Leave Notes & Student Messages
It would be appreciated if parents/guardians would phone the office, email or send in a written note if their child needs to leave early for appointments etc. Notes should be handed in at the front office in the morning so a leave note can be issued to students. If parents/guardians need to notify their child of a change of afternoon arrangements, it is necessary to phone the school prior to 2:20 pm (End of Lunch – Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday & Friday) or prior to 2:05 pm (End of Lunch – Thursday Sport) as it is often difficult to locate students if their last lesson is a PE Prac or there has been a room change. Students cannot be collected from the school during school hours by anyone other than a parent or guardian without phone or written permission.
Lateness to school is recorded as a partial absence and must be explained to the school the same way as other forms of absence. Arriving Late for school requires a handwritten note from a parent/carer, email or a phone call from a parent/carer or the absence is recorded as an unexplained partial absence.
Students are reminded that if they are unwell whilst at school they are to advise their teacher who will then send them to the Front Office. If necessary, the office staff will contact a parent while the student waits in the Clinic. Students are not to contact parents on their mobile phones as this leaves teachers and office staff unaware of the situation and is also in breach of the school policy – use of mobile phones.

Year 7 had an adventurous time on camp with so many activities to enhance their bond as a year group. Students faced their fears on the giant swing and leap of faith and were only able to do so through the support of their peers who cheered them on. They also competed in laser tag, tackled the BMX track, and tested themselves on the high ropes course. They should be commended on the support they showed each other and willingness to embrace all the challenges and activities.
Thank you to Ms Lisa Mumford (Leader of Wellbeing & Engagement) for all your organisation and all the teachers who accompanied our students on camp.

Year 7 Student’s Report
Year 7 camp was a fun time, we made great memories that we won’t forget. We faced some of our biggest fears and made new friends. We found that activities looked scarier than they seemed. My favourite activity was the leap of faith, it really tested us and showed us how much fun we can have if we step out of our comfort zone. Sharing cabins with our friends brought laughs and built our bond. We got to see around a foreign town and enjoy a long bus ride. We had fun activities like BMX riding, archery, snorkelling, giant swing, laser tag, high ropes, flying fox and the leap of faith. Thank you to everyone who gave us the opportunity to have a great three days.
Ms Mumford would like to thank the wonderful staff who made camp possible; Miss Devetak, Mrs Bartley, Mrs Basile, Mrs Tilbrook, Mrs Dunn, Mrs Boere, Ms Sear, Mr Howard, Mr Hobbes, Mr Hanlon and Deacon Vince.

The World’s Greatest Shave is run by the Leukemia Foundation in March each year. World’s Greatest Shave — or ‘Shave for a Cure!’ as it was originally called — began with the Graydon family in Lismore, Northern NSW. Eric Graydon was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukaemia and had to move to Brisbane to access lifesaving treatment. Eric and his family were able to stay at the Leukaemia Foundation’s ESA Patient Accommodation Village for a total of 14 months at no cost while he focused on getting better. To show their appreciation and help others facing blood cancer — the family decided to hold the very first shave. So in September 1998, Eric’s wife, Loma and their daughter Cathy held the first ever fundraising shave event for the Leukaemia Foundation. Eric’s haematologist, Dr James Morton thought it was such a great idea that he challenged the Leukaemia Foundation to shave the greatest number of heads in 24 hours. The word got out to the media — and with the support of the community, the event raised a huge $80,000 and shaved a whopping 200 heads. With that — Shave for a Cure was born!
Each year when someone signs up to shave, cut or colour for World’s Greatest Shave, they are helping to raise awareness and money to fund Australia’s best and brightest blood cancer researchers in their quest to deliver rapid advancements in diagnosis, treatment and ultimately — a cure.

On Friday, 18 March and Monday, 21 March three teachers and eight students participated at home and at school as part of team St Clare’s in the World’s Greatest Shave. Team St Clare’s raised a total of $3,652 through support from the St Clare’s community far and wide and from raffles held by our senior leaders for the opportunity to shave heads in styles chosen by the winner.
Thank you to all the participants, the people who supported the team for this great cause and an especially big thank you to Mrs Carolyn Smith for donating her time and skills for the shave.

Hastings School Futsal Titles 2022
13’s Boys, 14’s Girls & Boys Futsal Teams
Congratulations to our 13’s boys along with our 14’s girls and 14’s boys Futsal teams, who recently (Tuesday, 22 March) travelled up to Port Macquarie to compete in the 2022 Hastings School Futsal Titles. All teams played with terrific spirit, sportsmanship and skill throughout all their matches with some excellent Futsal played.
Our 13’s boys displayed strong defence and attacking flare throughout all pool matches, which resulted in comprehensive and entertaining 3-1 and 2-0 wins over Camden Haven and Hastings College. The boys played out hard fort 1-1 draws against St Columba Anglican College and Bellingen High School respectively and a 0-0 draw against a determined Bishop Druitt. St Clare’s finished the pool stage with a polished 2-0 victory over St Columba Anglican College Silver. Our boys reached the semi-finals in strong form and full of confidence, having gone through the pool stage undefeated. The semi-final saw our boys versing their round one opponents St Columba Anglican School, the match was a see sawing and tight encounter, however, St Columba Anglican School ran away eventual winners 3-0.
(L-R): Ashton Dennis, Hendrix McDonagh, Matthew Clements, Harry Allen, Nash Syron, Blaise Crompton & Caden Hicks
Our 14’s boys team started slow in their opening fixture, narrowly going down to Hastings College 2-0. However, the boys regrouped and bounced back convincingly in their second and third round matches with a 2-0 victory over Manning Valley Anglican College and a 1-0 victory over St Columba Anglican School. Our boys reached the semi-finals where they came up against the fancied Bishop Druitt, the game was a physical high energy encounter which saw numerous goal scoring opportunities for both teams. However, Bishop Druitt were able to capitalise on defensive lapses towards the end of the game, which saw them take the match 4-1.
Back Row (L-R): William Gibson, Max Lawson, Cohen Shoesmith, Riley Paine, Jade Parvin, Rohan Dormor & Archer Murray
Front Row (L-R): Kody Zahra, Mitchell Van Kampen & Lucca Boyling
Our 14’s girls started the day with a highly entertaining and well deserved 4-0 victory over St Columba Anglican School. The second and third round fixtures were both bruising and high intensity encounters against well drilled and skilful Manning Valley Anglican College and Camden Haven High School, with the girls enduring agonising 1-0 and 2-1 defeats respectively. The girls played all their matches with a terrific determination and grew with confidence and skill as the day progressed, they should be proud of their performances and congratulated for the way they represented the school.
Lastly, a big thank you to all the parents who transported and supported our students throughout the day and Mr Laurent Gonfond for his tireless efforts in coaching our school Futsal teams, it’s very much appreciated by everyone involved.

U19’s Futsal Team
On Wednesday, 23 March our U19’s Futsal Team travelled to Port Macquarie to compete. The team played amazingly all day, especially in defence as they won all their pool games without conceding a single goal. An incredible feat considering the fast pace and high-scoring nature of Futsal. We met a very determined Camden Haven team in the semi-final. The game finished 0-0, meaning we had to play five minutes of golden goal to determine the winner. Unfortunately, we conceded a goal from a free kick, which sent Camden Haven into the final. It was a tough way to end such a run of terrific performances. All students can be immensely proud of how they performed and conducted themselves on the day. They were truly an asset to our school community! Absent from the photo below is Ryan Martin, who unfortunately injured his ankle in a previous game and had to leave early. He was missed in our semi-final and we all wish him the best of luck for a speedy recovery.

Manning Valley Netball Association (Secondary) - Gala Day
On Thursday 17 March, St Clare's High School took part in the NSW Schools Netball Cup Gala Day at Manning Valley Netball Association. This year we entered four teams in the competition, both Boys and Girls sides. Each student played extremely well throughout the day and represented the school in high esteem.
Junior Boys
This was our Junior Boy squads first carnival. Many Year 8 students stepped up to play with little notice due to the loss of Year 7 players as a result of COVID. For many of these boys it was their first time competing in netball. They are to be commended on how quickly they learnt the rules of the game and ensured that the junior boys were well represented by St Clare’s. The boys demonstrated progressive improvement as they played each game throughout the day. They all showed a high level of enthusiasm and represented the school well.
The team consisted of the following players: Kody Zahra, Jade Parvin, Max Lawson, Cohen Shoesmith, Mitch Van Kampen, Charlie Gibbin, Rhyder Hodges, Indy Sheriden, Kai De Bono and Lucca Boyling

Junior Girls
This was also our Junior Girl squads first carnival. which was made up mainly of Year 8 students. Unfortunately, COVID impacted the ability of many of our Year 7’s being able to compete. The Junior Girls division was hotly contested on the day. The girls convincingly won 3 of their 4 matches. With two other schools similarly winning their matches the competition had to go to for and against points which unfortunately saw St Clare’s narrowly missing out on a place by 0.32%. The girls showed much enthusiasm and impressively represented the school on the day.
The team consisted of the following players: Miley Cox, Bonnie Proctor, Eve Montague, Mikayla O’Brien, Marley Brown, Ruby Polson, Sara Harris, Violet Miller, Ramona Ljumanovic, Ebonie Johnson and Charlotte Hawkins.

Intermediate Boys
COVID had a significant impact on our intermediate boys side, with a number of students stepping up last minute to ensure the team was able to compete. The boys learnt quickly in the pre-competition matches and had a number of close games throughout the day. Overall, the boys side placed third.
The side consisted on the day of the following students: William Gregory, Riley Dawson, Mason Polidano, Jet Cooke, Lachlan Bell, Kobi Critchley, Sam Tilley and Cooper Garland.

Intermediate Girls
Our Intermediate side placed first and went through the day undefeated with some great wins that included:
Wingham High School 28 - 8
Manning Valley Anglican College 22 - 8
Gloucester High School 28 - 10
Taree High School 29 -10
The team consisted of the following players: Madison Paine, Sienna Agnew, Sophie Drury, Aliviah Lewis, Savannah Murray, Ruby Sparks, Ashlee Brabant, Sophie Pratten and Rosie Miller
Our Junior Boys and Intermediate Girls will progress to the next stage of the NSW Schools Netball Cup, which will be held in Port Macquarie on Thursday, 25 August 2022.
A big thank you goes to our Year 12 assistants: Mackenzie Banham, Haylee Brabant, Tully Crossingham and Lucy Green - they did an amazing job in organisation of teams as well as umpiring throughout the day.
Mrs Amanda Brooks and Mrs Nicole Lovern

Careers Corner
Welcome to this week’s edition of Careers Corner. The term is flying past, and we seem to have weathered interesting times yet again. I think that many students and staff will welcome the holidays.
We are very lucky to once again be included in the TAFE Taster Program – YES (Youth Engagement Strategy) for 2022. The first YES program will run during Term 2. The dates for the YES Program are: Friday, 9 May 2022 through to Friday, 17 June 2022. This involves one day a week at TAFE (on a Friday) and four days at school as normal. A Microsoft Office form for students to fill in if they are interested, has been created. Acceptance will be based on a combination of expediency of form submission and responses provided. If students could provide as much detail as possible in their responses it would be appreciated. Please let me know if you would like some help with this. The link to the online form/registration can be found on the flyers outlining the YES offerings – this has been emailed to the Year 10 students. There are programs running at the TAFE campuses at Great Lakes and Taree. A list of the courses are on the flyers and I will have given hard copies out during PC on Wednesday morning. I am asking students to please let me know if they are interested and when they have applied.
There are many part-time and fulltime jobs on offer in our area and I encourage all students wishing to get work, to look in their Careers OneNote under Apprenticeships and Traineeships. Mid Coast Connect, Sarina Russo and several other agencies send me information which is emailed to students and placed in this section of each Careers OneNote. There is a “CL” section which stands for “Careers Links” and this is updated every two weeks. These positions are across the Hunter region and each edition has up to 70 pages worth of different positions with traineeships, apprenticeships and various job vacancies.
I am more than happy to help with any application or enquiry.
UAC
I am including a section on UAC for Year 12 as UAC opens on 12 April. I will also email this information to the students in the coming days.
UAC is the Universities Administration Centre and any student wishing to attend university post school should register with UAC which opens on 12 April 2022. This costs $70 if you register before 30 September and $200 if you register after 30 September.
UAC PIN and Applying
Year 12 students will receive their UAC PIN via email when applications open on 12 April. Although we are expecting more courses than last year to be available from April for students to list on their application, some institutions will be waiting until later in the year. Students would then make changes to their preference list later in the year once their chosen courses become available.
Students must use their Year 12 student number (NESA Number) and UAC PIN to apply so that they can be identified as a Year 12 student. If students don’t use their student number when applying they will not appear on the school’s data spreadsheet available on “School Hub”.
I will be talking to the students about this before the end of Term.

Work Experience
Please do not forget that if you are interested in doing Work Experience you need to come and see me to collect the paperwork. Year 11 and Year 12 can do this at any time provided it does not clash with exams etc. Years 9 and 10 have to complete this during the school term.
Usually, a student approaches a work-place to see if it is possible to do Work Experience and then lets me know where they wish to go and collects and completes the paperwork. I contact the workplace to confirm the details and we go from there.
I am happy to approach a workplace on a student’s behalf, however, most workplaces like to hear from and meet the student in the first place as this shows that the student is keen.
