Careers & VET Information
Careers Corner
Welcome to this week’s edition of Careers Corner. The term is flying past, and we seem to have weathered interesting times yet again. I think that many students and staff will welcome the holidays.
We are very lucky to once again be included in the TAFE Taster Program – YES (Youth Engagement Strategy) for 2022. The first YES program will run during Term 2. The dates for the YES Program are: Friday, 9 May 2022 through to Friday, 17 June 2022. This involves one day a week at TAFE (on a Friday) and four days at school as normal. A Microsoft Office form for students to fill in if they are interested, has been created. Acceptance will be based on a combination of expediency of form submission and responses provided. If students could provide as much detail as possible in their responses it would be appreciated. Please let me know if you would like some help with this. The link to the online form/registration can be found on the flyers outlining the YES offerings – this has been emailed to the Year 10 students. There are programs running at the TAFE campuses at Great Lakes and Taree. A list of the courses are on the flyers and I will have given hard copies out during PC on Wednesday morning. I am asking students to please let me know if they are interested and when they have applied.
There are many part-time and fulltime jobs on offer in our area and I encourage all students wishing to get work, to look in their Careers OneNote under Apprenticeships and Traineeships. Mid Coast Connect, Sarina Russo and several other agencies send me information which is emailed to students and placed in this section of each Careers OneNote. There is a “CL” section which stands for “Careers Links” and this is updated every two weeks. These positions are across the Hunter region and each edition has up to 70 pages worth of different positions with traineeships, apprenticeships and various job vacancies.
I am more than happy to help with any application or enquiry.
UAC
I am including a section on UAC for Year 12 as UAC opens on 12 April. I will also email this information to the students in the coming days.
UAC is the Universities Administration Centre and any student wishing to attend university post school should register with UAC which opens on 12 April 2022. This costs $70 if you register before 30 September and $200 if you register after 30 September.
UAC PIN and Applying
Year 12 students will receive their UAC PIN via email when applications open on 12 April. Although we are expecting more courses than last year to be available from April for students to list on their application, some institutions will be waiting until later in the year. Students would then make changes to their preference list later in the year once their chosen courses become available.
Students must use their Year 12 student number (NESA Number) and UAC PIN to apply so that they can be identified as a Year 12 student. If students don’t use their student number when applying they will not appear on the school’s data spreadsheet available on “School Hub”.
I will be talking to the students about this before the end of Term.

Work Experience
Please do not forget that if you are interested in doing Work Experience you need to come and see me to collect the paperwork. Year 11 and Year 12 can do this at any time provided it does not clash with exams etc. Years 9 and 10 have to complete this during the school term.
Usually, a student approaches a work-place to see if it is possible to do Work Experience and then lets me know where they wish to go and collects and completes the paperwork. I contact the workplace to confirm the details and we go from there.
I am happy to approach a workplace on a student’s behalf, however, most workplaces like to hear from and meet the student in the first place as this shows that the student is keen.
