Dear Parents & Friends of St Clare’s
I hope our final newsletter of Semester 1 finds you and your loved ones safe and well.
Over the past two weeks we have been delighted to welcome Fr Kevin Corrigan and Fr Terry Horne to St Clare’s to lead Year Level Masses and Liturgies.

These gatherings help and challenge our young people to think about what is important to them and how they will generate the change they want to see in the world. Working to change the world is a daunting task. Yet, when we apply the saying ‘think global but act local’, we make the challenge more manageable and more easy for people to “opt in”. This has certainly been the case for our school community over the past few weeks as staff, parents and students have tackled the challenge of homelessness and poverty by showing a wonderful level of support for the Vinnies Winter Blanket Drive.
Students have supported international calls for environment action through the St Clare’s Environment Group’s activities to clean the grounds, establish recycling bins and initiate sustainable practices in the school.
Year 10 students continued their contribution to the CatholicCare Community Kitchen which produces hundreds of meals per week for those in need in our community. These activities are at the core of Catholic Social Justice and give witness to the teachings of the Church and the example of Jesus. St Clare’s Professional Development Day for staff tomorrow (1 July): Learning for Justice which features guest speaker Stan Grant, is a further expression of our commitment to equality, diversity and the churches responsibility to help close the gap.
The Josephite Order have played a major part in the development of a Catholic Education system in our region. On Monday, we had the privilege of hosting a morning tea to thank and farewell Sr Ellen Shanahan who is moving to Lochinvar after over 60 years of service to our community, including a period as Principal of St Joseph’s, Taree and many years as a pastoral support person across the Manning. We wish Sr Ellen every happiness in the next stage of her life.

Much has been written in recent years about the importance of individuals and organisations being able to respond to challenging situations with flexibility and resilience. This has certainly been the case at St Clare’s over the course of Semester 1 as the countinuing influence of COVID and now the flu virus has been felt by students, parents and staff. Events have been cancelled or rescheduled, exams held and reheld with inventible catchups and staff training shifted to small groups and virtual meetings. It has been a testing time for all in our community and I thank parents, students and staff for their willingness to maintain a sense of humour and a willingness to work together to achieve positive outcomes for the young people in our care. I hope the holidays are a restful period for all.
Thank you for your care for each other and your service to our school community.
God Bless

St Clare's Laptop Purchase Scheme-Option
St Clare’s is a BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) school, where students attending are expected to have a laptop with them each day. This device needs to be charged and fully functional to assist the school in providing the best learning outcomes for your child.
Over a student’s time at St Clare’s, it is expected that a device suited to junior school (Years 7-9) would initially be purchased and then an upgraded device, more suited to a child’s elective choices, would be purchased for senior years (Years 10-12).
For many parents, purchasing a laptop is a daunting task with the industry full of jargon and quickly changing technologies. To assist parents/guardians, the school provides a list of minimum specifications each year.
Last year the school entered a partnership with a provider who offers high quality commercial grade devices backed by three-year next Business Day Warranty (including battery) and accidental damage insurance (ADP) covering three (3) claims at no excess over the three-year contract.
Representatives of the Diocesan IT team and St Clare’s IT Team investigated numerous devices and chose devices to offer which proved the best overall product in terms of cost, serviceability, features, and support. This took a high degree of anguish away from parents in the purchase of a laptop.
This company offers payment plans and payment schedules to suit families of varying incomes.
Early next term an information evening will be held to offer parents more information regarding the specifications for devices for parents of all students for 2023. Ordering will take place late next term with delivery in the first week of school 2023, allowing the payments to be spread over time.
Whilst this scheme is not compulsory, the quality and peace of mind this scheme offers has been noted and this has assisted teachers in best servicing your child’s needs.

The St Clare’s community came together to raise money for the Vinnies Winter Appeal. Students, parents and teachers baked cupcakes and sweets for the biggest bake sale we have ever had. Crowds gathered at recess and lunch to support the day and participate in the lolly guessing competition and raffles.
Thank you to everyone who baked, bought, and sold food on the day, with over $1,000 raised. We ask everyone to continue to give generously and donate blankets to this appeal to help those in need this Winter.

This term Year 7 have participated in a soup drive. Thinking of those in need this winter, they have shopped their pantries and supermarket aisles to bring together as much soup as they could. Congratulations to 7.3 who brought in the most soup by far. Well done!

Mother Teresa once said “Give your hands to serve and your hearts to love.” St Clare’s students and teachers certainly answer this call by being involved in the Catholic Care Community Kitchen program.
As a volunteer at the kitchen it is pleasing to see the students back in the kitchen after COVID, preparing and serving meals to the needy of our community. The people attending the kitchen enjoy seeing the happy faces of the students and many say it makes their day. The latest group of students, Claire Priddle, Blake Fishwick-Rosewarn, Ved Patel and Samuel Tilley supported by Mrs Racheal Minihan and Mrs Nicole Lovern worked tirelessly, but I also think they enjoyed seeing the smiles on the faces as the people received their meals plus a few extra treats that the students gave them. These students were a credit to their families and school. Their culinary skills were displayed as well as their ability to leave the kitchen spotless. Well done students and teachers, you are our volunteers of the future.

A huge thank you to the Year 11 and Year 12 students who hosted the Hospitality Dinner on Friday, 24 June. The food and service were amazing. The staff who attended the evening had a great night and look forward to the next dinner. Thanks also to Hospitality teacher Mr Laurent and Mrs McCann for organising the evening.

Here at St Clare’s Canteen we provide a variety of fresh food to suit all students’ budget.
But with the huge increase in all food supplies, wages and environmentally friendly packaging, the canteen can no longer carry these price increases.
So, on 18 July (Term 3) all items will increase 20¢ - 50¢.
Thank you to all students for their support.
Cheryl Kingsford
Canteen Supervisor
Mathematics Workshop provides the opportunity for every student to obtain assistance and support in improving their understanding of Mathematics. In the lead up to topic tests, assignments and general homework, a number of Mathematics Teachers are available each week. There is no need to stay the whole of lunch, come and go as you see fit. Careers Corner
The end of Term 2 is at hand and so we are half-way through the year. The students and teachers are very much looking forward to the holidays.
There is a Careers OneNote for students in Years 10, 11 and 12. Have a look at this as there may be information about something you would like to do post school and have not considered.
I will continue to bombard the students with emails as soon as I receive relevant information. So PLEASE check your emails carefully so that you don’t miss out on an opportunity if it becomes available.
Next term on Thursday, 28 July all students in Years 10, 11 and 12 will be travelling by bus to Fotheringham Park to walk through the first Taree Career Quip. This event is subsidised by RIEP (Regional Industry Education Partnerships). Early next term the students will receive a note with more precise details. At this stage, Year 12 will be attending during Period 1, Year 11 during Period 2 and Year 10 during Period 4. This is a fantastic opportunity for the students to get information on a huge range of post school career pathways. There will be local industry and businesses, TAFE, Universities, Defence Force Recruiting and Apprenticeship providers all with information for the students. Parents are more than welcome to attend and a list of exhibitors can be found here:
Several universities are now open for early entry and several of these universities have their early entry separate from UAC. UNE, Southern Cross and Charles Sturt have various pathways and are worth considering (if not your first choice) as a back-up if you don’t get your first choice.
University scholarships have begun to open up so if you want to choose that pathway it is very important to keep checking university websites.
APPLY, APPLY, APPLY!
Many scholarships go “untaken”. You have to be in it to win it and have nothing to lose by applying.
Elizabeth Argue from UNE came to talk to the students on Tuesday, 21 June and had a great deal of information about university post school pathways. Many thanks go to Elizabeth for coming in to talk to the students.
We continue to have local industry visits courtesy of Erin Lute at RIEP. Our latest visit was from Helen and her beautiful dogs (Therapy Dogs Diva Pets). Charles and Molly stole the show, and the photos speak for themselves. There are quite a few post school pathways associated with this industry. Thank you, Helen!

There are also quite a few TAFE scholarships available in different areas. I can’t stress enough the importance of looking on the appropriate websites.
Those who have registered for the UCAT can access practice papers either on the UCAT website or other websites such as NIE. Be aware that most of these other websites charge money for the papers and workshops.
If anyone needs assistance with this, please come and see me.
I would also like to encourage those Year 12 students who are applying for University to register on UAC ($73 before 30 September and $200 after this date) if they have not already done so. Once you have done this you can apply for SRS (Schools Recommendation Scheme). As students of St Clare’s, you automatically get the EAS consideration for being a student at a disadvantaged school and don’t have to apply for this. There are also various other forms of disadvantage, so if you think you qualify for any of these come and see me and we will go through the application process.

There is also a UAC guide in the Content Library - students who think they might be interested in a University pathway post school will receive a hard copy which shows various university courses and their requirements as well as a 10 Step Guide to making choices for Year 11. Information about TAFE and other pathways has also been provided. If any student is unable to access this OneNote, please come and see me.
If any Year 10 student would like to do a “TVET” course throughout 2023 and 2024, they need to come and see me to get an expression of interest form. I have put a booklet in the Team OneNote which outlines the courses available for next year. Students attend TAFE one day a week and school four days a week. This usually occurs on a Friday, however over the past couple of years Electrotechnology has run on a Wednesday.
There is a cost associated with these courses. These courses incur a cost and this depends on the course. The Catholic Schools Office will subsidise these courses, however parents are expected to contribute $300 per unit per year.
Most of the courses are 2 units per year which means parent contribution is $600 per year.
Things to remember when thinking about TVET/VET:
- Some EVET courses are 4units x 1 year. This means there is a bigger workload over the year and a parent contribution of $1200 for the year.
- Some courses have the option of an HSC Exam, others don’t. This is written on the information sheets available for each course.
- If a student wishes to gain an ATAR, then only 2 units can be Category B Board Developed. Only one subject can be done in this area (EVET/VET).
- If a student does not wish to gain an ATAR, then more than one Category B (Board Developed) or Board Endorsed subject can be done.
- Work missed at school has to be caught up.
- Compulsory Work Placement means a week out of school (35 hrs per year) each year for each 2 units. If the first year is missed, then the 70 hrs have to be made up in the second year. If the course is 4 units x 1 Year, then 70 hours of Work Placement is necessary.
- If a student does an EVET course and a VET course that means 70 hrs per year Work Placement.
- The EOI forms are due back to Mrs McCann (Mrs Avery) by Thursday, 13 August to be considered and a deposit of $300 is due by the end of Term 3.
Work Experience is available for students and provides an insight into various careers. Please come and see me if you are interested in this.
I am happy to meet with anyone who has questions. The students can write their names in one of the “white spaces” on the timetable on my office door and I can be contacted by phone (6552 3300) or email karen.mccann@mn.catholic.edu.au.
