First Class 23 – Museum of Art and Culture Yapang

On Tuesday 2 April, our current St Clare’s HSC Visual Arts students ventured down the highway to Booragul to visit the Museum of Art and Culture Yapang.  Upon arrival, students were welcomed to the Gallery and introduced to the First Class 23 Exhibition via a floor talk from Visual Arts and Public Programs Leader, Joanna Davies.

First Class is an annual exhibition held by MAC Yapang.  This exhibition honours and showcases the Bodies of Work created by the previous year’s HSC Visual Arts candidates from schools across Newcastle, Lake Macquarie, Central Coast, Hunter and the Mid North Coast.

This year’s exhibition saw works commenting on gender, identity, the fragility of life and the strength of individuality.  Students viewed a range of expressive forms including time-based forms, sculpture and textiles and fibre works.  A number of the works were interactive and students enjoyed the opportunity to engage with these works on a personal and intimate level.

Visiting MAC Yapang and viewing the First Class 23 exhibition has allowed our Visual Arts students the opportunity to appreciate the work of peers who have completed the same course work they are currently engaging in.  It also allowed students to continue building on the themes, subject matter and concepts for their own HSC Bodies of Work.

A big thank you to Mrs Laurie for her wonderful navigational skills and attending the excursion with us.  A great day was had by all in attendance!
