NAIDOC Week – Honouring “The Next Generation”
During Week 4, 75 of our students were invited to Chatham High School to participate in NAIDOC Week celebrations, with the theme: “The Next Generation: Strength, Vision and Legacy.” This was a great day of culture, identity, and community. A special congratulations to our talented dancers who performed in the opening ceremony. Their passion and pride were inspiring. Thank you to Robin Davies and Josh Wood for their tireless efforts in organising this meaningful event and making it a reality for our school.

Staff Development Days
We extend our thanks to our families for their support during our recent Staff Development Days. These days were pivotal in advancing our School Improvement Plan.
- On Monday our day aligned with our ministry goal: A deeply embedded Catholic Identity and mission integrated into all aspects of the school's Catholic culture. Staff participated in our Spirituality Day, reflecting on our mission in Catholic Education and what it means to be part of a Catholic school community. The day was centred around the theme of HOPE, beautifully tying into the upcoming Jubilee Year.
- On Tuesday, our focus shifted to our Wellbeing Goal: Creating and promoting our school as a safe and supportive learning community that prioritises student wellbeing and builds resilience. Staff engaged in professional learning around the impact of trauma and how we, as educators, can support students to thrive.
St Clare’s Feast Day
Today we celebrated our Feast Day to celebrate and acknowledge the powerful impact of our two patron saints St Clare and St Mary of the Cross MacKillop. The day involved a beautiful Mass, inspiring talks from St Clare’s alumni Alison Penfold, and Jordan Martyn, and also from Dominic Drumore from the Catholic Schools Office. Their stories reminded us of the strength and spirit of our community. The afternoon was filled with joy as students and staff came together for a variety of fun activities, celebrating the vibrant heart of St Clare’s.

Important Security Update for Student BYOD Devices
Action is required for students with BYOD Windows 10 devices as Windows 10 will soon no longer be supported by Microsoft.
To ensure our student device security students should upgrade to Windows 11 as soon as possible.
Microsoft has announced that support for Windows 10 will end on 14 October 2025, meaning it will no longer receive critical security updates.
To stay protected and ensure optimal performance, it is strongly recommended that all students with BYOD Windows 10 devices follow Microsoft’s instructions and upgrade to Windows 11 as soon as possible. There is no charge for this upgrade.
Why this matters:
- Windows 10 will no longer receive Microsoft updates after 14 October 2025, leaving devices exposed to threats.
- Upgrading to Windows 11 helps reduce security risks.
- Student Work Protection: Staying current helps safeguard assignments, projects, and personal data.
Ways to install Windows 11 - Microsoft Support
Upgrade to Windows 11: FAQ - Microsoft Support
How do I check what version of Windows am I running?
Select Start > Settings > System, then select About. You then see Edition, Version, and OS Build information.
We encourage all families with Student Windows 10 computers to begin the upgrade process now to avoid last-minute disruptions.

World Scholars Cup
The World Scholar’s Cup was held at, at St Philip’s Christian College, Cessnock last month. This is the first time the World Scholar’s Cup has been hosted in our region, making it a particularly exciting opportunity for our students.
Over two exciting days, our students joined peers from across the region to engage in this international festival of learning, where collaboration, creativity, and critical thinking take centre stage. They participated in four challenging and inspiring events:
- Scholar’s Bowl– a fast-paced team quiz spanning a wide range of subjects.
- Team Debate– lively debates on topical and thought-provoking issues.
- Scholar’s Challenge– an individual multiple-choice test covering diverse areas of knowledge.
- Collaborative Writing– creative and analytical writing in teams.
Our students, Max Isbel, Michael Bonnano, Beau Vaughan and Oliver Collins represented St Clares High School with distinction, demonstrating teamwork, confidence, and intellectual curiosity.

University of Newcastle (UoN) High Performing Student Program
Earlier this term we celebrated the remarkable achievements of students in the UoN High Performing Student Program, who were awarded certificates in first-year university units across Business, Mathematics, and Medical Sciences.
Graduating students from St Clares are:
Discrete Maths - Bonnie McMaster and Flynn Small
Globalisation and International Management - Jaylah Koenig
More than academic excellence, the graduation recognised the motivation, dedication, and perseverance that set these students apart.
As alumni HPSP student and current 4th-year Biomedical Science student Tim reminded the audience, this program is an aspirational pathway - encouraging students to aim higher, say yes to opportunities, and surround themselves with likeminded people.
We were reminded to find what lights your fire, believe in yourself, step outside your comfort zone, and lift others up along the way.
The Maitland Newcastle Catholic Schools students walked with courage - and became dreamers for tomorrow.
Proudly, one-third of the graduates stemmed from our Diocesan Schools - a testament to the strength of our partnerships and the potential of our young people.
Together, we empower students to shine.
And we’re proud to partner with the only university in Australia offering this opportunity.

University of Newcastle HDR Student Festival – Inspiring Our Future Scholars
On Tuesday, 26 August selected students from across our schools including St Clare's Year 11 students attended the University of Newcastle Higher Degree by Research (HDR) Student Festival at the Callaghan Campus. This exciting event gave students a unique opportunity to experience university life firsthand, meet current researchers, and explore pathways into higher education.
Throughout the day, students engaged with interactive workshops, panel discussions, and campus tours, gaining valuable insights into how research shapes innovation and future careers. It was a wonderful opportunity for our students to see how their talents, curiosity, and learning can extend far beyond the classroom.
We thank the University of Newcastle for hosting this inspiring event and our participating students and families for their support.

NNSW Schools Futsal Titles
St Clare’s High School was proud to have its 13’s Girls and 13’s Boys teams qualify for the Northern NSW School Futsal Finals in Port Macquarie, where they competed against some of the best teams from across the region. Both teams represented the school with great effort, determination, and sportsmanship throughout the day.
Under 13’s Girls
The girls started their day in the best possible fashion with a thrilling 2–1 victory over Bishop Druitt College. Strong defence and quick counterattacks gave St Clare’s the edge in a game that boosted the team’s confidence.
In their second match against Camden Haven High School, the girls battled bravely but fell short in a 4–2 defeat. Despite the loss, they continued to show determination and teamwork.
Round three brought a tightly contested clash with Hastings College. Both teams exchanged goals in an end-to-end game, with the match finishing 2–2 after an exciting finish.
Next up was MacKillop College, who would later go on to win the tournament overall. St Clare’s rose to the challenge and played some of their best futsal of the day, holding the eventual champions to another 2–2 draw in what was a fantastic achievement.
Their strong performances earned the girls a place in the semi-finals, where they once again met Hastings College. In another hard-fought battle, St Clare’s found the net twice, but Hastings managed to pull away late in the game, winning 4–2. Although they fell just short of the final, the girls’ semi-final run was a credit to their effort, teamwork, and determination.

Back Row: Tessa Saville, Lara Godfrey & Adda Pickford
Front Row: Mikayla Humphries, Aliza Ryan & Hayley Young
Under 13’s Boys
The boys began their campaign against Bishop Druitt College in what proved to be a fast-paced and physical encounter. Despite creating several chances, St Clare’s went down 4–2 but showed plenty of attacking promise.
In their second match, the boys again came up against Bishop Druitt, this time their second side. The game was tight in defence, but St Clare’s struggled to find the back of the net and eventually lost 2–0.
Their third round saw them face Melville High School. The boys fought hard and managed to score, but Melville proved too strong in the end, taking a 3–1 win.
A spirited effort came in the fourth round against Camden Haven High School. In one of their most competitive performances of the day, St Clare’s pushed their opponents all the way before narrowly losing 4–2.
The final group game was against Hastings College. Fatigue had started to set in, and despite their determination, the boys went down 4–0 to close out their tournament. While results didn’t fall their way, the team showed resilience and continued to play with effort and pride right through to the last whistle.

Back Row: Parin Gupta, Xavier Hammond, William Lovern, Lucas Hammond & Zach Forrester
Front Row: Chase Brooks, Joey Hill, Miles Craig & Levi Dodds
Lastly, a big thank you goes to the parents and staff who supported the players on the day - your encouragement and organisation helped make this tournament possible for our students.

Boys Diocesan Basketball Competition
On Tuesday, 26 August the Years 7/8 and Years 9/10 boys’ basketball teams headed down to Newcastle for the Diocesan Basketball competition. Each team played three games across the competition.
Our 7/8 team made up of Taj Butcher, Heath Murray, Zane Nixon, Oscar Yeates and Isaac Grehan played all their games with determination and some great skills.
Our 9/10 team of Cade Van Eywk-Campbell, Henry Doyle, Leo Beckton, Dallas Agnew, Triston Brody, Win Kityanyong, Jagger Wallis, Harry Martin and Jayden Bourke all played with expertise and solid performances. The team in their first match against Trinity Catholic College, despite a strong start, went down to Trinity. The boys recovered and went on to win their next two games against St Bede’s and St joseph’s Aberdeen. These two wins allowed the boys to progress to the preliminary final where they faced All Saints College. The boys dominated All Saints to take the game and progress to the Semi Final where they came back up against Trinity Catholic College. This time around the boys took control over Trinity matching them for a hard-fought game. Unfortunately, a penalty in the last seconds of the game allowed Trinity to take the game 39 to 37.

On behalf of myself and Ms May, I want to thank all the boys for their excellent sportsmanship and behaviour on the day. We would also, like to acknowledge the hard work of Charlotte Cooper and Alice Godfrey for volunteering as game officials and Taj Butcher for his help with game scoring when not playing.

The Year 10 students have now made their subject selections for 2025 and the process of working out the lines and classes is well under way. Thanks to Mrs Avery and Mr McKee for their work on this. Thanks also to all the “mentors” who helped with this process.
If a student is interested in completing an SBAT in Years 11 and 12, now is the time to get the paperwork started. Please come and see me if you wish to do this. Please also remember that if you choose this pathway then you are responsible for catching up on any work that you have missed while at work or at TAFE. Once the SBAT/TVET is started then this can count as at least two of your units for Preliminary and HSC work.
We have had one confirmed HNEH SBAT for 2025/2026. Congratulations to Kalani Collis on her successful application. I am still waiting to hear if late applications for this are possible.
Thanks to those Year 10 students who have submitted an EOI for TVET in 2026. They are currently under consideration at the CSO and I will be submitting them into the EVET site in the coming weeks.
Please remember that there is usually more than one pathway into a preferred career and talk to your teachers and parents about your choices. I am happy to meet with anyone who would like some help with this.
If anyone would like to do Work Experience, please come and get the paperwork from Mrs Lovern.
I am happy to meet with anyone to discuss anything to do with post school pathways.
