State da Vinci Decathlon Championships
As part of the Maitland-Newcastle Catholic School high potential and gifted learning program, our Year 7 students were selected to participate in the da Vinci Decathlon State Championships on Tuesday 14 May at Knox Grammar School.
This prestigious academic competition is designed to challenge and stimulate young minds. Our Year 7 students, Tristan Ma and Oscar Yeates, were members of the Year 7 CSO Maitland-Newcastle team that achieved remarkable success at the Regional da Vinci Decathlon event, showcasing their exceptional talents and dedication to academic excellence.
The team secured several impressive accolades at the Regional event, including:
- 1st place in Mathematics
- 3rd place in English
- 2nd place in Code Breaking
- 3rd place in Engineering Challenge
- 2nd place in Ideation
- 2nd place in Cartography
- 1st place in Legacy
This Year 7 team emerged as the overall winners, claiming 1st place in the region, and earning the opportunity to represent our Virtual Academy and Diocese at the State Championships. This achievement reflects the hard work, commitment, and exceptional abilities of our students, as well as the dedication and support of our educators and schools.




At the State da Vinci Decathlon Championships, held on Tuesday 14 May, the Year 7 team competed across 10 disciplines, including Mathematics, English, Science, Code Breaking, Engineering Challenge, Ideation, Creative Producers, Art and Poetry, Cartography, and Legacy. Each of these disciplines presented unique challenges that tested our students' problem-solving skills, creativity, and knowledge across a range of subjects.
We are immensely proud of our Year 7 students Tristan and Oscar as valuable members of the Diocesan team and their representation of the Diocese of Maitland-Newcastle. They displayed excellence, sportsmanship, and a true passion for learning at the State Championships.
