Careers & VET Information

Careers Corner

Here we are already in Week 3 of Term 3!  Things are revving up for our Year 11 and Year 12 students with the end of Preliminary and the HSC fast approaching.

Year 10 are in the process of selecting their subjects for Senior School and will be attending mentoring sessions in small groups to help this process.  Last Wednesday night there was an information evening for students and parents to help the students with their decision-making process going forward.  Thanks to Mrs Avery and to all the staff who came along to help make this night the success that it was.

All of Years 10, 11 and 12 had the opportunity to attend Career Quip 2025 last Thursday 31 July. This amazing event gave the students the opportunity to find out about the many post school pathways available to them and from the feedback that staff have received it was very worthwhile.  The biggest complaint was that there was not enough time.  We will look at our options for next year if it continues to go ahead.

I would like to thank the students for their excellent behaviour and the staff who gave up their lesson time and some of their free time to accompany the students.  Thanks to the staff who stayed at school and looked after those who couldn’t attend.

I also need to thank Mr Laurent, Danya and the Hospitality classes for catering for the exhibitors (morning tea and lunch).  They did a fantastic job, and this has meant that some money will be able to be put towards next year’s Sea World Work Placement excursion.  It has also been a wonderful way to promote St Clare’s in the community.

Chelsea, Ava and Ahmed from Sydney University came to speak to the Year 12 students on Friday 1 August.  They had a great deal of information regarding all aspects of study at Sydney University with all important scholarship information.  Thank you to Chelsea, Ava and Ahmed for taking the time to talk to us.

Year 12 Trials began on Monday and continue for the next couple of weeks, so we wish all the students the best of luck.  It is very important, Year 12, to eat well, get some good sleep, exercise and have a good study regime.

There are only seven weeks until you have completed your school classes for your school years (all thirteen years’ worth).

There are a great deal of university open days, early entry pathways and employment opportunities coming up over the coming weeks.

I have been sent some cards with a QR Code for Teacher Education Scholarships from the CSO.  These are excellent scholarships and if, Year 12, you are thinking about studying to become a teacher, then it is a great scholarship to apply for.  Please see me if you would like more information.

I would like to remind everyone to please check their emails.  I am receiving a great deal of information about job vacancies, apprenticeships and traineeships.  If you would like some help with any applications that you might be making over the coming weeks and months, please email me.  There is information available in your respective Career Team OneNote spaces in the Content Library under the various tabs.

If you are interested in an Apprenticeship or Traineeship pathway, make sure that you look at the Careers Links and any information that is in the OneNote.

I would like to highly recommend the Australian Apprenticeship App.  It has excellent information and practice aptitude tests to see where you would best fit in industry.

There are several deadlines approaching for the Year 12 students who are considering a university pathway next year.

The cut-off for UAC applications at $80 is 30 September.  After this date the cost of registering will rise to $215 so if you are thinking about a university pathway post school and you are in Year 12, please make sure that you have registered before 30 September.  Do not forget to apply for SRS (Schools Recommendation Scheme) as soon as you have registered and check to see if you are eligible for EAS (Educational Advantage Scheme).

Early entry deadlines for many universities are also fast approaching.  UNE, Southern Cross, Wollongong and the Sunshine Coast University all offer these programs so please have a look at these.  Charles Sturt University and Newcastle are offering programs as well.  There is a very good presentation in the Careers OneNote about the various Early Entry pathways.  Even if it is not your first choice, it can give you some options if you do not get into the course you want.
