Careers & Vet Information
Careers Corner
This week we begin with a reminder to those students in Year 12 who might be considering careers in medicine or dentistry post school that they need to register for the “UCAT” (University Clinical Aptitude Test ANZ).
I will be sending an email to Year 12 with the details and have placed these details in the Careers section of the school website under the heading UCAT information and in the Careers One Note under UCAT information. Please follow the instructions in this information if you are considering medicine or dentistry post school. If you need assistance, please come and see me.

On Wednesday, 10 March, myself and several of our Year 11 and Year 12 students will be travelling to Port Macquarie to visit Charles Sturt University for the annual “Charles Sturt Explore” day. We are waiting to hear how many seats we are allowed on the bus that is being subsidised by the university. I will know definite numbers by the end of this week.
On Tuesday, 16 March, 20 Year 11 and Year 12 students interested in careers in the Health field will be attending a Health Careers Forum at the Manning Education Centre. This venture is hosted by UNE and Newcastle University and provides a wealth of information about Medicine, Nursing, Midwifery, Occupational Therapy, Speech Pathology, Radiography, Pharmacy, Physiotherapy, Nutrition and Radiology. The students get some “hands on” experience and valuable information on what the requirements are for each of these areas. Stay tuned for some photos in the next Chapter of Careers Corner.
Each week the Year 12 students have a Careers lesson on Tuesday for 25 minutes. They are in the process of completing a booklet which they began on our first Careers Day this year. This booklet will help me to gain a profile of each of the students and hopefully some idea of where they might be thinking of going post school. This will help me to help them. I am also asking them to complete two resumes for two careers that they might be interested in. Each student has access to a Careers OneNote which is where I am hoping they will keep their information. This will allow me to make any adjustments to their resumes and then they or I can print them if necessary. They can create these in Job Jump which they all have access to, or in Word as there are several resume and cover letter templates available here as well. No two jobs are exactly the same. A cover letter and resume should be tailored to the criteria of the job.
On each Friday of Week B, the Year 11 students have a Careers lesson for 25 minutes. We have been looking at strengths and skills and possible pathways. During our next Careers lesson the students will be completing a Career Quiz. This might give them more of an idea about possible post school pathways and could help to find some direction and motivation over the next couple of years.
I have a timetable on my door with blank spots for the students to write their names if they wish to see me or they can email me to arrange a time. I am more than happy to talk to any student who would like some help with a resume or anything else relating to Careers.
As information comes to hand, I will email the relevant students and I will also be putting all information in the Careers section of the School Website. This will relate to apprenticeships, traineeships, job vacancies, university information and open days, TAFE information and scholarships. There is a section in the Careers section titled Job Jump which has a great deal of up to date information. All the students in Years 10, 11 and 12 have, or will have, access to this.
Please see below for important information re upcoming sessions. Thanks to CAA.
