Reflection Day

Year 9 spent an afternoon at the pool after their reflection day last week.  It was great to see them just relaxing and enjoying each other’s company to end the year.  A very big thank you to Mrs Lovern and all the teachers who supported Year 9 this year.

Science

The end of the year has finally arrived, and Year 9 Science 3 have been testing the knowledge they have obtained over the past term by doing some hands-on practical tasks.

The first task was making a solar oven.  The task was to design it themselves using materials of their choice.  The object was to see which oven would reach the highest temperature and thereby melting a marshmallow.  The temperature was tested with a thermometer.

Callum Minett and Jahzara Neal made an oven which reached 69 degrees Celsius.  Along with this one there were many successful models that were able to make the marshmallow very soft.

The second task was to build a tower that was the tallest and could carry the most weight.  The only materials to be used were 20 straws and 30 cm of sticky tape.  Once again this took much cooperation and skill to master the building.  I was delighted with the way the students were able to think outside the box to come up with an effective building.

 

The most successful tower was made by Jake Byma and Braidyn Collins which was 40 cm tall and was able to hold 115 grams of weight.  It was interesting to see the different ways the students approached the task.

It is wonderful to see students ‘thinking like scientists’.  I encourage them to continue to do so during the holidays.
