Visual Arts 10, 11 & 12 Lake Macquarie Museum of Art and Culture & Biennale of Sydney Excursion
Wednesday, 4 May, 50 students, three teachers: Ms Niko Campbell-Ellis, Mr Jason Koenig, Mrs Lyndall Laurie and the most helpful bus driver: Mr Dru Prewett of Newcombes Coaches, began the ‘art experience’ epic day out. First stop was Lake Macquarie Museum of Art and Culture to encounter the First Class 21 exhibition.
This exhibition is a curated selection of the high calibre artworks produced at a wide range of schools. First Class 21 gives young artists the chance to present their artwork within a gallery environment and to a wide audience.
Employing a variety of expressive forms, our Visual Arts HSC cohort have examined concepts encompassing identity, subjectivity, family memory, isolation, ecological responsibilities, fear and nostalgia. Intimate artworks explore complex connection between home, identity, personal relationships, and culture.
Visual Art diaries entries were made, and many group photos were taken!

We forged on towards Sydney before lunch. Our group was lucky to view three venues featuring Biennale of Sydney artists: the brand new Barangaroo Cutaway and Stargazer Lawn followed by the Museum of Contemporary Art.
Since its inception in 1973, the Biennale of Sydney has provided a platform for art and ideas, showcasing the work of nearly 1,900 artists from more than 100 countries. Today it is considered one of the leading international contemporary art events, recognised for commissioning and presenting innovative, thought-provoking art from Australia and the world. This year’s 23rd Biennale of Sydney, titled rīvus, featured working themes of weaving and rivers, which included topics like rights of nature, sustainability, food security, consumption, pollution, biodiversity, extinction and ancestral technologies.
Thank you to our Years 10, 11 & 12 students. We very much enjoyed talking about artwork installations, favourite artists, and themes along the way. Our steps were many: walking under the harbour bridge, sampling gelato at Circular Quay and being immersed in conversations about art and culture.
