Careers & VET

Careers Corner

We have made it to the end of Term 1 – where has the time gone?!

I would like to start this edition of Careers Corner with a HUGE THANKS to Mr Laurent and the Year 10 and Year 12 Hospitality students who catered for one of the dinners at the local Tastefest.

The photos speak for themselves.

Maureen Eason had this to say about Laurent and the students:

Don’t you just love it when a plan comes together and becomes a wonderful event.  This of course happens with much hard work and planning and then everyone involved on the night plays their part with precision and much enjoyment.

A huge THANK YOU to the Tastefest Committee for asking Taree Quota Club to become involved with the Producer’s Dinner last night and for their preparation to ensuring this to be a huge success as it has always been in previous years.

To chef Laurent and your fantastic band of young St Clare’s High School pupils whom you must be so proud of, we owe you our gratitude as you are the reason the guests keep wanting to be part of this night year after year.

WELL DONE - a wonderful meal Laurent and thanks for making sure the workers also got to enjoy your cuisine.

And I must add- what a wonderful backdrop the beautiful Manning River makes!

The Year 12 VET students will be going on Work Placement next term.  The Year 12 Construction class will be out during Week 2.  Thanks to Mid Coast Connect and the many employers for allowing this to happen.  This is an excellent opportunity for the students to learn more of the world of work and often results in job opportunities for each of the students.

The Year 12 Hospitality class are flying to the Gold Coast and will be working at Sea World from Monday, 8 May until Thursday, 11 May inclusive.  Once again this is an excellent opportunity for the students to learn about and experience first-hand the many different aspects of the Hospitality industry.

Year 12 students who are interested in a university pathway post school are reminded to check each university’s website for early application and scholarship information.  UAC has opened.  All students should have received a PIN from UAC – please check your junk mail if you have not received this yet.  Please email me if you do not receive a PIN even if you do not want to go to university post school.

I will be making the latest information available regarding SRS, EAS and Equity Scholarships as soon as it is posted on the UAC site.

Please note that other states do not have their applications open yet (QTAC, VTAC, SATAC) and will open at various stages over the coming months.

  • Undergraduate applications open for domestic students on Wednesday, 5 April 2023. UAC PINs will be emailed to NSW HSC and ACT Senior Secondary Certificate students on the same day.
  • Undergraduate applications open for international students on Wednesday, 19 April 2023.
  • This year’s UAC Guide will be delivered to schools in Term 2.
  • Resources on the UAC website will be updated in April.

Each of the students will receive their UAC guide early next term.  As soon as they arrive at school they will be distributed to the students.  There is a great deal of information in this booklet which can also be accessed from the UAC site (www.uac.gov.au).

Job Jump also has a great deal of information with regard to this, so don’t forget to check out the chapters in our Careers Team OneNote.

Next term we will continue to have Industry visits on Friday mornings.

Students in Year 12 who might be considering careers in medicine or dentistry post school need to register for the “UCAT” (University Clinical Aptitude Test ANZ).
