Careers & VET Information

Careers Corner

Week 4 down and Year 12 have only one Trial Exam left on Monday.  Well done to everyone for your efforts over the past weeks.

There are only six weeks until you have completed your school classes for your school years.

There are a great deal of university open days, early entry pathways and employment opportunities coming up over the coming weeks.

CareerQuip

I would like to remind everyone to please check their emails.  I am receiving a great deal of information about job vacancies, apprenticeships, and traineeships.  I have recently sent emails to Years 10, 11 and 12 with many different vacancies.  If you would like some help with any of these applications, please email me.  There are several positions across a wide range of careers.  The information is also available in your respective Career Team OneNote spaces in the Content Library under Apprenticeships and Traineeships.

If you are interested in an Apprenticeship or Traineeship pathway, make sure that you look at the Careers Links, VERTO and Mid Coast Connect information that is in the OneNote.

I would like to highly recommend the Australian Apprenticeship App.  It has excellent information and practice aptitude tests to see where you would best fit in industry.

There are several deadlines approaching for the Year 12 students who are considering a university pathway next year.

The cut-off for UAC applications at $78 is 30 September.  After this date the cost of registering will rise to $220 so if you are thinking about a university pathway post school and you are in Year 12, please make sure that you have registered before 30 September.  Do not forget to apply for SRS (Schools Recommendation Scheme) as soon as you have registered and check to see if you are eligible for EAS (Educational Advantage Scheme).

Early entry deadlines for many universities are also fast approaching.  UNE, Southern Cross, Wollongong, and the Sunshine Coast University all offer these programs so please have a look at these.  Even if it is not your first choice, it can give you some options if you do not get into the course you want.

It has been very pleasing to have had interviews with many of the Year 12 students.  Please do not hesitate to contact me to arrange a meeting so that we can go through your options.

Trade Readiness Program

On Thursday and Friday 27 and 28 July, 12 Year 10 students took part in an intensive Trade Readiness program run by Dave (Disco) from CHS Training.  This was funded by RIEP (Regional Industry Education Partnerships) and organised for us by Erin Lute.

A huge thank you to Erin and especially to Dave for presenting this excellent program.

The students covered several aspects of the Construction Industry and looked at and practised quite a few relevant skills.

The program covered the following:

This pre-employment orientation into trade-based occupations covered general maintenance, electrical, plumbing, carpentry, plastering and painting.  The program was delivered over two consecutive days and included:

  • Construction Industry selection
  • Qualifications that would enhance employment opportunities
  • Where to locate those qualifications, how long they take to complete and approximate costs
  • Discussion on how to apply and demonstrate aptitude in a resume and when applying for jobs

Thanks also to Mr Phil Chalmers and Mr Ian Evans who stayed with the students on Thursday.

It was my great pleasure to be with the students on Friday and Dave was full of praise for the students and their application to the tasks.  His parting words to me were “I would be happy to employ any of them in the workplace”.

Well done to everyone and I will be organising another White Card course in the coming weeks (Wednesday 20 September – cost $139) for those who wish to gain this qualification.

There are some excellent photos – they speak for themselves!

Year 10 Subject Selection 2024

Year 10 are now in the process of choosing their subjects for 2024.  This is done online and has been explained to all of Year 10.  Students are encouraged to choose subjects that they will enjoy and that are relevant to what they might like to do post school.  Obviously, there are some university courses that have subject prerequisites, and this will need to be taken into account when choosing subjects for senior school.

Year 10 SBAT/TVET

I need any TVET EOI handed in to me as soon as possible and if a student is interested in completing an SBAT in Years 11 and 12, now is the time to get the paperwork started.  Please come and see me if you wish to do this.  Please also remember that if you choose this pathway then you are responsible for catching up on any work that you have missed while at work or at TAFE.  Once the SBAT/TVET is started then this can count as at least two of your units for Preliminary and HSC work.

I have had two Nursing SBATS confirmed with HNEH to start next year so congratulations to those students.  I am still waiting to hear if late applications for this are possible.

Careers.jpg

Please remember that there is usually more than one pathway into a preferred career and talk to your teachers and parents about your choices.  I am happy to meet with anyone who would like some help with this.

If anyone would like to do Work Experience, please come and get the paperwork from me.

I am happy to meet with anyone to discuss anything to do with post school pathways.
