Careers & VET Information

Careers Corner

The end of the term is upon us, and several deadlines are approaching for the Year 12 students who are considering a university pathway next year.

The cut-off for UAC applications at $78 is 30 September.  After this date the cost of registering will rise to $220 so if you are thinking about a university pathway post school and you are in Year 12, please make sure that you have registered before 30 September.  SRS (Schools Recommendation Scheme) closed on Monday, 18 September and there have been quite a few students who have applied for this which is excellent.  All applications are in the process of being reviewed and submitted by the school.

EAS applications are due by mid-November but hopefully have been or are very close to being finalised by the students.  Please come and see me if you require an educational impact statement from the school in support of one of these applications.

Early entry deadlines for many universities are also fast approaching.  UNE, Southern Cross, Wollongong, and the Sunshine Coast University all offer these programs so please have a look at these.  Even if it is not your first choice, it can give you some options if you do not get into the course you want.

Charles Sturt University also have more rounds of their Early Entry pathway as the year progresses.  Thanks to those who have let me know that they have received an offer.

Newcastle University has sent the following information to Careers Advisers for their students:

Following first round of early offers there has been a significant number of additional applications.  As a result, the University of Newcastle has made the decision to proceed with additional offer rounds for new applicants.

Please see below for additional offer dates:

Release Early Offers

NEW OFFER ROUND

Thursday 28 September

NEW OFFER ROUND

Thursday 5 October

PLANNED

Our intention for the two additional offer rounds in September is to assess new applications and anyone who did not receive an offer in the first round.

Applicants who received an offer in the first round who have updated preferences will be considered for offers in the final round on 5 October 2023.  If eligible they would receive offers on 5 October 2023.

For students who have not yet applied for early entry applications still close on 25 September 2023.

I would appreciate any student letting me know when they receive an offer.

If you are considering a TAFE pathway, get on to the TAFE NSW website and have a look at the many courses they offer from short courses through various Certificates and Diplomas and Bachelor Degrees.  You don’t need an ATAR for this pathway.

I would like to remind everyone to please check their emails.  I am receiving a great deal of information about job vacancies, apprenticeships and traineeships.  I have recently sent emails to Years 10, 11 and 12 with different vacancies and employment opportunities.  If you would like some help with any of these applications, please email me.  There are several positions across a wide range of careers.  The information is also available in your respective Career Team OneNote spaces in the Content Library under Apprenticeships and Traineeships.

If you are interested in an Apprenticeship or Traineeship pathway, make sure that you look at the Careers Links, VERTO and Mid Coast Connect information that is in the OneNote.

There is a New Australian Apprenticeships Website.  The Federal Government has developed a new website to replace the Australian Apprenticeships Pathways site.  The new site is Australian Apprenticeships:

The industry-based literacy and numeracy quizzes are still accessible in this new site.

It has excellent information and practice aptitude tests to see where you would best fit in industry.

It has been very pleasing to have had interviews with many of the Year 12 students.  Please do not hesitate to contact me to arrange a meeting so that we can go through your options.

Several universities are offering One on One mentoring sessions (virtually) with students.  The Year 12 students would be able to speak to a university student one on one and ask any questions they might have about any aspect of university life.  Please check on each University website.  There are also many Open Days – this is excellent as you can see what University life is like.

Please check out scholarships at the various universities and colleges of TAFE.  There are several on offer including a regional TAFE scholarship.  The Teach Rural and CSO Teaching Scholarship are now in the process of being determined so good luck to all those who have applied.  You have to be in it to win it and have got nothing to lose by applying.

I am including a link to apply for a scholarship/grant run by the GLEF (Great Lakes Education Fund) which provides funds for anyone who wishes to study post school – TAFE, University or other provider.  If you live in the Great Lakes area you may be eligible.  Go to:

There are quite a few job opportunities coming up in the next few months and for next year.  I have already, and will continue to, email this information to the relevant year groups.  I have recently emailed students about a Dental Traineeship in Taree and have been disappointed to have received no expressions of interest.

It is very important that all the students check their emails please.

Year 11 students will soon begin the process of discontinuing or adjusting their subjects for the HSC course of study.  Mrs Avery will talk to you at the beginning of next term about this process and give you directions to enable you to complete this process.

This week the Construction students in Year 11 completed and are completing their compulsory Work Placement in various businesses throughout the Manning.  This is the first half of their compulsory 70 Work Placement hours.  In the past this has led to employment for many of the students, either part-time or fulltime and is a wonderful opportunity to show their skills and get an idea of the world of work.  A huge thank you goes out to the many local businesses who take our students for this very valuable experience.

The Year 10 students have now received their subjects and lines for 2024.  Please discuss any issues you have with your teachers.  Thanks to Mrs Avery and Ms Posadas for their work on this.

I would like to thank Scott Bailey from Learning Live who delivered a White Card Course on Wednesday, 20 September here at St Clare’s.  There were 15 students who completed the course.  The photos speak for themselves.  We will hopefully be running another course towards the end of Term 4, especially for those who are doing Construction in Year 11.  This is a mandatory part of the Construction course.

Please don’t forget to come and see me to collect the paperwork if you would like to do Work Experience.

I would like to wish all Year 12 students the best of luck with their upcoming exams.

Don’t forget, Year 12, to eat well, get some exercise each day and try and have a regular study plan.  Your teachers are all happy to help in any way they can so don’t be afraid to ask.

Have a wonderful holiday and I look forward to seeing everyone in Term 4.
