St Clare’s 7-8 Girls Basketball Team Shows Grit in Intense Basketball Championship

Date:  30 & 31 October 2023

After being undefeated at the Diocesan Basketball Championships in August this year, the 7-8 Girls Basketball team headed to Bankstown to represent the Maitland-Newcastle Diocese at the NSW CCC Championship.

In an action-packed two-day basketball tournament, the girls showcased their determination and skill as they faced formidable opponents.  The team competed in seven hard-fought games, experiencing a rollercoaster of emotions.

Day 1:

The tournament began on a promising note as St Clare’s clashed with McAuley Catholic Central, Tumut.  The team's grit and determination on the court was evident as they secured a hard-fought victory with a final score of 17-13.  The win provided a strong start and instilled confidence in the girls.

In their second game, they faced a formidable opponent in St Ursula's, Kingsgrove.  The match was fiercely contested, with our girls battling throughout.  Ultimately, they came up just short, concluding the game with a score of 24-17, showcasing their fighting spirit and determination.

The third game saw the team taking on the tough and experienced Mount St Benedict College, Pennant Hills.  Despite their relentless effort, our girls faced a challenging opponent and concluded the game with a score of 32-18.  Their unwavering effort was commendable.

During the evening, the girls had the opportunity to bond and relax over dinner, strengthening their camaraderie and team spirit.

Day 2:

The second day of the tournament brought fresh challenges, starting with a match against one of the top teams, St Mary Star of the Sea, Wollongong.  The girls displayed their mettle on the court but faced a formidable adversary, resulting in a 40-17 loss.

The following game was against Monte Sant' Angelo Mercy College, North Sydney.  Our girls put on an impressive performance, leading throughout the game.  However, an unfortunate turn of events in the last 60 seconds resulted in a heartbreaking loss, with a final score of 31-28.

In another closely contested match against McCarthy College, Tamworth, our girls once again showcased their resilience and determination.  They emerged victorious with a score of 21-18, highlighting their ability to maintain composure under pressure.

The last game of the day was against Loreto, Kirribilli.  The girls demonstrated their unwavering fighting spirit, and their hard work paid off as they secured another well-deserved win of 24-17.

I praise the team's outstanding effort and perseverance throughout the tournament.  The girls demonstrated incredible determination and sportsmanship in each game.  They faced tough challenges, but came together as a team, learnt from each experience, and ended on a high note with two wins.  They should all be incredibly proud of their efforts.

Throughout the tournament, Danya Gillard did a commendable job at bench duty, always ready, willing, and capable to tackle the task head on.  A big thank you to Danya.

Heartfelt gratitude to the supportive parents and family members who offered support, encouragement, and enthusiastic cheers from the sidelines.  The team was lucky to have such a crucial support system.

The St Clare’s basketball team's journey in this intense tournament was marked by valuable experiences, lessons, and moments of triumph.  Their unity, determination, and resilience are characteristics that bode well for their future endeavours in the world of school basketball.  The school community eagerly awaits their continued growth and success in the sport.
