Saint Carlo - The Patron Saint of Teenagers and Technology
This week marked a momentous occasion in the life of the Catholic Church with the canonisation of Carlo Acutis, the first millennial to be declared a saint. Born in 1991 and passing away at just 15 years of age, Carlo was known for his deep devotion to the Eucharist and his use of technology to spread the faith - earning him the nickname “God’s influencer.” His canonisation by Pope Leo XIV on 7 September in St Peter’s Square is a powerful reminder to young people that holiness is not reserved for the past but is a living call for every generation. Carlo’s life, filled with compassion, joy, and digital evangelisation, inspires us all to live with purpose and faith in today’s world.
RUOK Day
On Thursday we recognised RUOK day. Staff and students were encouraged to wear a yellow accessory and reminded to check in on those around us. Our RAKU Warriors, under the direction of Mrs Laurie created a banner to display and lollipops were distributed by our Senior Leaders to all students during recess. Thank you to Mrs Lovern for her coordination of the day.

Year 11 Exams
As we wrap up this week, we extend our best wishes to our Year 11 students as they undertake their end-of-preliminary exams - may your efforts be rewarded and your confidence grow as you take this important step forward in your Stage 6 learning journey.
Christine Harmer
Principal

Please be aware that Year 11 are currently sitting their Yearly Preliminary Examinations until Wednesday, 24 September and the HSC Examinations commence Term 4 on Thursday, 16 October and run through until Monday, 10 November. During this time, we will be unable to use the PA system to call students and make announcements during breaks. Therefore, it would be appreciated if parents and carers could please contact the Office prior to recess and lunch breaks to pass on messages for collection during the school day.

I would like to thank all the people, students and staff who helped with the St Clare's Feast Day last Friday, 29 August.
It was a huge effort, and everyone is to be congratulated on their efforts and participation.
We started the day with two talks.
- Alison Penfold and Jordan Martyn who are past students and talked about the role St Clare's played in shaping their pathway. A huge thank you to them both for taking time out of their very busy schedules to present to the students.
- Dominic Drumore who is working with the Diocese as their Youth Ministry Engagement person. He was fantastic and the students were very impressed with his message and encouragement.

We celebrated Mass after recess with Father Kevin Corrigan, Father John Lovell (in Father John Vo's absence) and Deacon Vince Ryan. The students were respectful, and the music was beautiful - thanks to the music students and their teachers Amanda Brooks and Victoria Merillo. Thanks also to Nicole Lovern for operating the PowerPoint and Ben Gibbs for setting up the technology for the day.
The various stalls were set up before and during lunchtime and the students participated in many of the activities over the course of the afternoon.
There were many students who went above and beyond in helping with this. Thanks to Danya our Food Tech assistant for purchasing our supplies for the day.
We raised a total of $2,100 which is fantastic – thank you!
Hopefully, next year will see even greater student numbers participating.
Well done to everyone!

This week we take a moment to recognise the importance of keeping all children safe in our community. The symbol we are using is the lotus flower. This flower is often thought to be a symbol of life’s ebbs and flows. The flower’s ability to rise from murky waters into something beautiful makes it a powerful symbol of hope and perseverance. This incredible process is a reminder that as a community we must work to support the safety and protection of children… to ensure they reach their full potential. Protecting children is everybody’s business. At this time, we also take time to reflect on, remember and pray for healing of all children who have been impacted by abuse.
"Heavenly Father,
we lift up all children this week, praying for their safety and well-being.
Bless every community with the resources, jobs, and safe spaces they need to be strong foundations for families and children.
We ask for Your love to counter greed and desperation, helping families find reliable incomes and empowering communities to protect children from harm.
Guide us to listen to children, value their voices, and take concrete actions to create safe, caring environments for them to thrive.
In particular we pray for:
Fairness and Opportunity:
-for a society where every child has a fair start, with the support and resources needed to develop healthily.
We pray for Family Support:
- for parents to have reliable incomes, and for communities to be nurturing environments where families and children can thrive.
We pray for Safe Environments:
- for protection against abuse and harm, and for communities to be safe spaces for children to grow and play.
We pray for Empowerment and Voice:
-that adults will listen to and value children's input, advocating for their best interests in decision-making processes.
We pray for Strong Communities:
-for strong foundations in neighbourhoods, including access to good schools, childcare, parks, libraries, and health services.
Children are a precious gift from God. As a community, we pray for all children’s protection and safety, and we make a commitment to help children around us live the full and abundant life God desires for them.

Important Security Update for Student BYOD Devices
Action is required for students with BYOD Windows 10 devices as Windows 10 will soon no longer be supported by Microsoft.
To ensure our student device security students should upgrade to Windows 11 as soon as possible.
Microsoft has announced that support for Windows 10 will end on 14 October 2025, meaning it will no longer receive critical security updates.
To stay protected and ensure optimal performance, it is strongly recommended that all students with BYOD Windows 10 devices follow Microsoft’s instructions and upgrade to Windows 11 as soon as possible. There is no charge for this upgrade.
Why this matters:
- Windows 10 will no longer receive Microsoft updates after 14 October 2025, leaving devices exposed to threats.
- Upgrading to Windows 11 helps reduce security risks.
- Student Work Protection: Staying current helps safeguard assignments, projects, and personal data.
Ways to install Windows 11 - Microsoft Support
Upgrade to Windows 11: FAQ - Microsoft Support
How do I check what version of Windows am I running?
Select Start > Settings > System, then select About. You then see Edition, Version, and OS Build information.
We encourage all families with Student Windows 10 computers to begin the upgrade process now to avoid last-minute disruptions.

The parish-based initiative of the hampers for the people affected by the floods is winding up. It has been a humbling experience to work on this project as I have met many people and shared their recovery journey. I would like to take the opportunity to thank the staff, and students of St Clare’s for their generous donations of toiletries for the hampers. As the hampers were delivered, we saw and heard firsthand stories of how people had been affected by the flood. Many lost all their possessions and have been traumatised by the floods. So, while these families start the road to recovery, I ask you to keep them in your prayers. Once again St Clare’s you have seen a need and responded in the true spirit of Mary MacKillop.

Year 10 Hospitality Cupcake Challenge
This week our Year 10 Hospitality students have rolled up their sleeves and stepped into the kitchen for a Cupcake Challenge and the results are as creative as they are delicious! From classic vanilla swirls to bold, colourful designs, students have been putting their baking and decorating skills to the test.
To succeed in their task, the students had to:
- Choose a target market for their cupcake.
- Research six possible designs and select their favourite.
- Present a detailed decoration plan (with diagrams and written explanation).
- Develop a standard recipe card including all cake and decoration ingredients, plus a costing for two cakes.
- Bring their designs to life with creative decoration.
From elegant floral patterns for high tea lovers to bold, colourful designs aimed at younger audiences, each cupcake told a story and showcased the students’ individual flair.

A Taste of Success
This challenge was not only about baking - it was a lesson in planning, creativity, and presentation. Students had to think like professional pastry chefs, considering their audience, costings, and final product appeal.
Congratulations to all our Year 10 Hospitality students for their hard work, imagination, and sweet results. We can’t wait to see what you’ll create next!
Laurent Gonfond
Hospitality Teacher
This week, our Year 10 Food Technology students swapped their recipe books for resourcefulness in a challenge designed to test their creativity, problem-solving, and cooking confidence.
Armed with a tray of everyday home staples -items you would commonly find in the freezer or pantry, or that can be bought on a budget - the students were tasked with creating a family-style dinner. The twist? No recipe, no step-by-step method - just a few helpful tips from their teacher along the way.
The Ingredients
The mystery box of flavours included:
- Chicken breast
- Teriyaki sauce
- Hokkien noodles
- Frozen oriental vegetables (shared between three bays - because, as some students joked, vegetables are the enemy)
Thinking Like Real Cooks
Without a set recipe, students had to decide how to prepare, cook, and season their dishes, learning valuable skills like timing, heat control, and flavour balance. It was all about trusting their instincts and working as a team to bring everything together.
The Result – Delicious!
By the end of the lesson, the classroom was filled with the aroma of sizzling chicken, sweet and savoury teriyaki, and freshly cooked noodles. Despite some playful reluctance over the shared vegetables, the final dishes looked vibrant, smelled amazing, and most importantly - tasted fantastic.
This activity showed our budding chefs that you don’t always need a formal recipe to create a delicious, budget-friendly family meal. Sometimes, all it takes is a few simple ingredients, a bit of creativity, and a willingness to give it a go.
Well done to all our Year 10 Food Tech students - another tasty success!

Netball NSW Schools Cup - North Coast Regional Finals
The North Coast Regional Netball Finals took place on Wednesday, 27 August. We were fortunate to have warm and pleasant conditions - especially welcome after the stretch of rain and cold weather leading up to the event. It was a fantastic day of competition, with our teams showing great spirit and determination. Below is a summary of each team's performance and highlights from the day.
Junior Girls
Our 7/8 Girls team had a fantastic day at the School’s Cup in Manning, where their hard work and success earned them a place at the next stage in Port Macquarie. The girls played some truly beautiful netball, combining skill with great teamwork and genuine mateship as they encouraged and supported one another every step of the way. They showed determination, resilience, and joy in every game, proudly representing our school both on and off the court. The day finished with two strong wins and two hard-fought losses, but more importantly, with plenty of fun, laughter, and lasting memories.
Junior Girls Team: Luca Brown, Darcy Miller, Milla Simpson, Indie Simpson, Aliza Ryan, Anayah Wetere-Smith, Isabella Garland, Zoe Holstein and Indiana Zahra

Intermediate Girls
The intermediate girls played some fantastic netball throughout the day. We took away some great wins and some close loses. The sportsmanship both on and off court was wonderful to see. The girls maintained a constant competitive and driven play throughout every match of the day. A major highlight and success for the day was convincingly taking away the win against a much-rivalled Gloucester team in the final playoff round for the day. The girls are to be commended for a successful and great day of competition.
Intermediate Girls Team: Yasmin Cassidy, Annabelle Laurence, Alice Phillps, Charlotte Andrews, Gemma Paulin, Addison Hogan, Lucy Millard, Abby Moelker, Miller Morrissey and Charlotte Cooper

Intermediate Boys
The boys were competitive throughout the day, showing great sportsmanship and fair play in every match. We dropped one game in the rounds to SCAS, but that result still saw us through to the semi-finals. Facing MacKillop in the semi was expected to be a tough challenge, but the boys stepped up and secured a strong 26–14 win to earn their spot in the grand final - once again against SCAS. It was a tight and intense match, with both teams pushing hard. Our boys held their nerve and came away with an 11–7 victory, crowning them North Coast Champions for the Year 9 & 10 boys in 2025. An amazing achievement! The team now progresses to the State Finals at Netball Central, Sydney Olympic Park, taking place on 28 November 2025. There will be lots of training over the next few months as we prepare for the tournament.
Intermediate Boys Team: Dallas Agnew, Jagger Wallis, Leo Beckton, Triston Brody, Henry Doyle, Henry O’Connell, Tom Davy, Angus Moore, Harry Martin, Cade Van Ewyk-Campbell and Samuel Stephens

The teams represented St Clare’s with pride, integrity, and determination - making our whole community proud with their conduct both on and off the court. Best wishes to our Intermediate Boys as they prepare for the State Finals; we will be cheering you on every step of the way!

On Thursday 4 September the Year 9-10 girls’ basketball team travelled to Broadmeadow for a Diocesan gala day. Careers Corner
There are only two weeks to go before the end of a very busy term. I hope that everyone is keeping safe and well.
Year 12 are on the countdown to the end of their classes – of course everyone will remain focused and on track to optimise their learning.
I would like to remind everyone to please check their emails. I am receiving a great deal of information about job vacancies, apprenticeships and traineeships. I have recently sent emails to Years 10, 11 and 12 with different vacancies and employment opportunities. If you would like some help with any of these applications, please email me. There are several positions across a wide range of careers. The information is also available in your respective Career Team OneNote spaces in the Content Library under Apprenticeships and Traineeships.
If you are interested in an Apprenticeship or Traineeship pathway, make sure that you look at the Youth Links, ATC and Mid Coast Connect information that is in the One Note.
There is an excellent Australian Apprenticeships Website. The Federal Government has developed a new website to replace the Australian Apprenticeships Pathways site. The new site is Australian Apprenticeships
The industry-based literacy and numeracy quizzes are still accessible in this new site.
It has excellent information and practice aptitude tests to see where you would best fit in industry.
Once again, I am reminding Year 12 students that there are several deadlines approaching especially for students who are considering a university pathway next year.
The cut-off for UAC applications at $80 is 30 September. After this date the cost of registering will rise to $220 so if you are thinking about a university pathway post school and you are in Year 12, please make sure that you have registered before 30 September. SRS (Schools Recommendation Scheme) has now closed (5 September). Offers will be forthcoming in November.

Early entry deadlines for many universities are also fast approaching. UNE, Southern Cross, Wollongong and the Sunshine Coast University all offer these programs so please have a look at these. Even if it is not your first choice, it can give you some options if you do not get into the course you want.
Charles Sturt University also have more rounds of their Early Entry pathway as the year progresses. Thanks to those who have let me know that they have received an offer.
I would appreciate any student letting me know when they receive an Early Offer.
It has been very pleasing to have had interviews with many of the Year 12 students. Please do not hesitate to contact me to arrange a meeting so that we can go through your options.
Several universities are offering One on One mentoring sessions (virtually) with students. The Year 12 students would be able to speak to a university student one on one and ask any questions they might have about any aspect of university life. Please check on each University website. There are also many Open Days – this is excellent as you can see what University life is like.
Please check out scholarships at the various universities and TAFE. There are several on offer including a regional TAFE scholarship. The Teach Rural and CSO Teaching Scholarship are up for grabs so if you are considering a teaching pathway post school please apply. You have to be in it to win it and have got nothing to lose by applying.
If you are considering a TAFE pathway, get on to the TAFE NSW website and have a look at the many courses they offer from short courses through various Certificates and Diplomas and Bachelor Degrees. You don’t need an ATAR for this pathway.
Year 11 students are currently completing their final Preliminary Exams and Tasks. After this time some of them may be able to discontinue a subject. It is very important that if they are considering this, that they talk to their teachers, myself and Mrs Avery.
I would like to remind everyone that Shane Hardcastle from Inspired has provided the Year 10/ 11 and 12 students with a link to helpful resources in HSC subject areas. This has been emailed to the students and is included below:
