Welcome to Week 6 of the school year and the halfway point of Lent for 2021.
In the last newsletter I wrote about the Clarity project and our staff’s efforts to ensure that your sons and daughters are focussed on their learning and have a clear understanding of how they can be successful in their learning. A major contributor to any student’s feelings of self-worth and success is that they have a strong belief in themselves as being a capable learner, be able to work hard and “figure out” the problems a teacher may challenge them to solve.
In my most recent “check-in” with our Year 7 cohort of 2021, I was delighted to learn that they feel very much at home and are enjoying the challenges and changes that secondary school has offered them over the past six weeks. The group has very much appreciated the opportunity to meet new friends, work with a variety of teachers and collaborate in a number of different learning environments. The group of Year 7 students I interviewed this week have enjoyed being responsible for their own learning, have felt supported as they have learnt how best to find their way around the school, operate their personal devices and… “do things differently from last year.” My thanks to Year 7 students Nina Davy, Cornell Estibeiro, Jade Parvin, Ruby Polson, Grace Randall and Ben Wright, for their thoughts and advice and I wish all Year 7 students well on their school camp at Lutanda, Toukley Wednesday, 10 March to Friday, 12 March.
While our Year 7 students are enjoying their camp, St Clare’s will again host primary school students from the Manning who are gifted in the arts to a two day ASPIRE Arts workshop facilitated by ASPIRE project coordinator Anna Kerrigan and teachers of the arts from across the Diocese. The program offers the opportunity for students and teachers with a diverse range of skills and backgrounds to learn and collaborate together as they write and produce a performance over two days. My thanks to all the students and staff from across our region and to Anna and her team for their work on the young people’s behalf.
St Clare’s was very well represented by School Vice-Captain Edie Gillis, School Captain Patrick Guthridge and WenYuan LimSchneider at the annual Taree Lion’s Youth of the Year competition. I will leave the reader to discover the eventual winner by reading Tim Masters, Year 12 Pastoral Coordinator’s entertaining report which can be found a little further into this newsletter!
I am delighted to announce that all our students will have the opportunity to hear a truly inspiring message from guest speaker John Coutis. John is a motivational speaker on topics such as resilience, bullying and goal setting. Students are invited to listen to the story of this remarkable Australian who was born with a severe physical disability in which doctors gave him little chance of survival. John has not only defied medical opinion, he has thrived and is acknowledged as one of the world’s most inspirational speakers.
Without the lower part of his body, John embraces a full and positive life. He rolls around on his custom skateboard and uses humour to communicate some of life’s most important lessons. John has delivered his inspirational message to over 6 million people around the world, speaking at events to complement former US President Bill Clinton, global entrepreneur Richard Branson, former British Prime Minister Tony Blair and the late Steven Covey and former South African President Nelson Mandela. In 2020, John was recognised with an esteemed Order of Australia Medal (OAM) from the Queen of England for his services to the Australian community.
Recently the St Clare’s executive was authorised by the Catholic Schools Office to undertake a full school uniform review. The timeline, process and procedure for the review will be published early in Term 2. We would expect the process to carry well into 2022 as we consult widely with students, parents and staff into all aspects of the uniform which has not had a comprehensive review for over 10 years.
A reminder that Year 7 2022 Enrolments are open. Enrolment packages are available from the front office. Please complete and return the enrolment form by 22 March and provide the information as outlined on the check list.
God bless

Prayer Point
“Many Samaritans of that town had believed in him on the strength of the woman's testimony when she said, 'He told me all I have ever done', so, when the Samaritans came up to him, they begged him to stay with them. He stayed for two days, and when he spoke to them many more came to believe; and they said to the woman, 'Now we no longer believe because of what you told us; we have heard him ourselves and we know that he really is the saviour of the world.'” John 4
I love this woman. Here she is, not even the worst person in the town, but the ignored and the invisible even though people can point her out.
And then there is the power of Jesus who, instead of ignoring her, talks and listens to her and meets her where she’s at physically, emotionally, culturally and spiritually, and loves her. She is beautiful to him.
But what’s exciting is that the town celebrates her: “…not just because of what you told us… we believe that he is the saviour of the world.”
Who is this man?

The Pope’s Video
Each month the Pope sends a video to the world during which he talks and prays about a particular issue.
In February this year he talked about “Women who suffer Violence.”

The clips go for about 90 seconds.
In March he talks and prays about the Sacrament of Reconciliation
On Tuesday, 2 March, the four School Captains, Hannah Van Arendonk (School Captain), Patrick Guthridge (School Captain), Lachlan Oliver (Vice-Captain) and Edie Gillis (Vice-Captain), participated in a day long Senior Leadership Conference with other leaders, executives and other leader figures from the Diocese. They discussed what it is to be a leader in today’s climate, and how they can better create a positive environment inside our schools to foster leadership in others. It was a good opportunity for our school leaders to connect with others and attempt to create projects and initiatives across the State and Diocese. The inspiration and motivation created on the day will create a better opportunity for future projects completed by the leadership team and the whole SRC. The Captains were extremely grateful for the experience and thank Mrs Ryan for her organisation and support.

Lions Youth of the Year (Manning River)
The Manning River Lions Club held their Youth of the Year celebration on Wednesday, 24 February. This event was a celebration of young people’s academic, cultural, sporting and community involvement. St Clare’s was represented by Edie Gillis, Patrick Guthridge and WenYuan LimSchneider; all of whom did magnificently!

Front Row: Patrick Guthridge, Edie Gillis, Mrs Carla Gillis, Mrs Jacinta Guthridge & Dr Brian Neale
For students, the night began with a twenty-minute interview, where a panel of judges spoke to students about how they contribute to our local community, and gained insight into how they saw the world and their own place in it. This led into the formal dinner, where students from the area were greeted by the Lions Club. The first public speaking portion of the evening got underway, as students were required to answer two impromptu questions, speaking on each topic for two minutes:
- What is the appeal of social media to teenagers?
(Our students responded by speaking of the advantages of communication, and the ability to find a sense of community and indulge interests beyond their immediate peers and geographic limitations).
- Evaluate the benefits of home schooling vs face to face learning.
(And, you wouldn’t believe it, none of our students spoke about their love of doing Shakespeare online, instead – recognising the academic and social benefits, not just to themselves, but the entire school community, of attending classes in person).
After a wonderfully prepared meal, served by the Chatham High School Hospitality team, the night moved to its climax, as the students took to the stage again for their prepared speeches – the platform allowed them to pick any topic of interest to them.
- Edie was a natural speaker who offered the benefits of cross-cultural exchange as a way of broadening her understanding of the world, while leading to a greater appreciation of her own country.
- WenYuan spoke about cows. As it turns out, cows are one of our own main polluters – but with an addition of seaweed to their diet – their emissions drop 90%! The seaweed farms will also be a contributor to removing carbon from the oceans.
- Patrick spoke about the media – delightfully stringing together metaphors to describe greed and manipulation – taking aim at politicians, Facebook and Mr Murdoch.
From here, the tension built, as the judges retired to consider their verdicts.
Public Speaking Champion – Patrick Guthridge
Lions Youth of the Year (Manning River) – Patrick Guthridge
Although the night did not give out 2nd or 3rd prizes, I would be confident to say we cleaned up – and I’m unofficially announcing WenYuan and Edie jointly as runner up.
I will also announce myself a winner, I walked out of there with a box of chocolates!
Patrick now progresses to the next level of the competition, where he will compete against winners of other regions. All the best to Patrick!

On Wednesday, St Clare’s competed in the Diocesan Theatresports Competition at St Pius X Adamstown. This would involve us competing against a number of schools in the Maitland Newcastle Diocese as St Clare’s entered two Year 11 teams and two Year 9 teams into the contest. The day involved students using their improvisational skills to develop short performances with no preparation.
The Year 11 teams placed first and second, receiving some excellent scores on the day. The physicality and character skills they displayed made them an audience favourite with huge rounds of applause. They remained consistent with their scores after scenes involving a monster in the basement, building Shakespeare’s Globe and finding a cure for baldness. Year 11 was represented by Medinah Wells, Yolanta Guthridge, Lucas Drury, Ryan Stewart, Cooper Twemlow, Scarlett McCarthy, Taj Simpson and Georgia Rourke.
The Year 9 team started strong and showed a desire to improve all day. After only studying Drama for six weeks, they performed with the flair and creativity of a senior team and had the enthusiasm to back it up, even rehearsing in the intermissions. Both Year 9 teams came second on the day with tied scores and were represented by Will Maslen, Sam Tilley, Lachlan Bell, Bryce Young, Claire Priddle, Megan Pieschel and Elise Miles.
I would like to congratulate all students who competed for their exceptional behaviour and commitment on the day. A big thank you to all the parents who assisted with transport. Your assistance is greatly appreciated.

This week in Year 9, students are playing reading games so they can have fun exploring the Japanese language. Today we played a game called ‘Airplane translation’ (developed by Jason Fritze). To the students, it was an excuse to throw paper planes in the classroom, but in teaching terms, the students got multiple repetitions of a comprehensible text (but I like to think of it in terms of waxing cars, painting fences and sanding floors).
In the game, students got into pairs and wrote a portmanteau of their name on a blank piece of paper (for example Phoebe and Abbey became ‘Phlabbey’). They then looked at a short story projected onto the board. The students scanned the story (first instance of reading) and found a sentence which they are familiar with (second instance) and wrote it down in English. They then turned the piece of paper into a plane, got into teams and threw them at each other from across the room. They picked up another groups plane, read the English sentence and searched the projected reading (third instance) to find it and then wrote down the next sentence (forth reading) in English again.
We did this a few times and it turned out that reconstructing someone’s dodgy plane was the most difficult part of the task (but at least it wasn’t the reading). Once the students finished the game each group effectively had a translated version of the story, which was great, but in reality the heavy lifting in terms of learning had already been done and they didn’t really need a translation. We will most likely recommission our old planes into a paper balls and play ‘Trashketball’ next lesson (look it up).
By the end of the game some students were beginning to really know the story backwards, which puts us in a good position to try ‘Cold Character Reading’ (Terry Waltz). This is where students explore a familiar story but written in more advanced Japanese scripts (Katakana and Kanji) with ZERO pre-teaching. It is a fascinating and enviable time to be involved in language learning and teaching.

Year 8 student Hannah Carmichael has had an eventful and successful start to 2021! The Forster SLSC club member and Nipper conducted a rescue while surfing at an unpatrolled section of One Mile beach in Forster on Sunday.
Thirteen-year-old Hannah was surfing at around 4:30 pm Sunday when she spotted a man entering the water for a swim. It was after the flags had been taken down and well north of the normally patrolled area. Hannah said that she noticed that the man had entered the ocean directly in a rip so was “keeping an eye on him” whilst she surfed. After a short while she realised that he was in trouble as he appeared to be stuck in the rip and, after few big waves had come through, he appeared to be struggling to keep his head above water. The man began to try to swim against the rip and was becoming more and more exhausted.
Hannah waved to her mum, who was on the beach, to let her know that she was paddling over to assist. She paddled her surfboard over to the swimmer and then helped him onto her board as some more large set waves came through. With the swimmer still on her surfboard, Hannah then paddled out with the rip until she was clear of it and was then able to swim her board, and the swimmer, safely back to shore on a sandbank.
The swimmer was exhausted and had swallowed some water but was extremely grateful for Hannah’s help. The incident was witnessed by several other people on shore who agreed that had Hannah not been there to implement her surf lifesaving skills the outcome could have been very different!
Well done Hannah, the entire St Clare’s community are very proud of your skill and bravery.
Hannah completed her SRC in October last year, is a patrolling member of Forster Surf Life Saving Club and has been a Nipper since the age of 5.
Hannah was also recently voted one of the Lower North Coast Branch Junior Lifesavers of the Year (JLOTY) and will be attending the JLOTY development camp in Sydney in April with 21 other young lifesavers from throughout the state.
Right: Hannah’s interview with NBN news last month after receiving the Lower North Coast Branch Junior Lifesavers of the Year Award
Well done Hannah.

On Wednesday, 10 March, myself and several of our Year 11 and Year 12 students will be travelling to Port Macquarie to visit Charles Sturt University for the annual “Charles Sturt Explore” day. We are waiting to hear how many seats we are allowed on the bus that is being subsidised by the university. I will know definite numbers by the end of this week.
On Tuesday, 16 March, 20 Year 11 and Year 12 students interested in careers in the Health field will be attending a Health Careers Forum at the Manning Education Centre. This venture is hosted by UNE and Newcastle University and provides a wealth of information about Medicine, Nursing, Midwifery, Occupational Therapy, Speech Pathology, Radiography, Pharmacy, Physiotherapy, Nutrition and Radiology. The students get some “hands on” experience and valuable information on what the requirements are for each of these areas. Stay tuned for some photos in the next Chapter of Careers Corner.
Each week the Year 12 students have a Careers lesson on Tuesday for 25 minutes. They are in the process of completing a booklet which they began on our first Careers Day this year. This booklet will help me to gain a profile of each of the students and hopefully some idea of where they might be thinking of going post school. This will help me to help them. I am also asking them to complete two resumes for two careers that they might be interested in. Each student has access to a Careers OneNote which is where I am hoping they will keep their information. This will allow me to make any adjustments to their resumes and then they or I can print them if necessary. They can create these in Job Jump which they all have access to, or in Word as there are several resume and cover letter templates available here as well. No two jobs are exactly the same. A cover letter and resume should be tailored to the criteria of the job.
On each Friday of Week B, the Year 11 students have a Careers lesson for 25 minutes. We have been looking at strengths and skills and possible pathways. During our next Careers lesson the students will be completing a Career Quiz. This might give them more of an idea about possible post school pathways and could help to find some direction and motivation over the next couple of years.
I have a timetable on my door with blank spots for the students to write their names if they wish to see me or they can email me to arrange a time. I am more than happy to talk to any student who would like some help with a resume or anything else relating to Careers.
As information comes to hand, I will email the relevant students and I will also be putting all information in the Careers section of the School Website. This will relate to apprenticeships, traineeships, job vacancies, university information and open days, TAFE information and scholarships. There is a section in the Careers section titled Job Jump which has a great deal of up to date information. All the students in Years 10, 11 and 12 have, or will have, access to this.
Please see below for important information re upcoming sessions. Thanks to CAA.
