Dear Parents & Friends of St Clare’s
I hope you and your loved ones are safe, fit and well. This newsletter celebrates the success of students as they strove to do their best during a period of challenge and uncertainty.
At our academic assemblies this week, I reminded all students that success is based on hard work and that to perform consistently at ones best, requires concentration and commitment to personal goals and a willingness to seek assistance when it is needed.
I congratulated all our award winners and noted with pride the wide range of external and internal awards that your sons and daughters have achieved over the past year.
Congratulations to Morgan Gao who has been selected for OnSTAGE 2022 and Isabella Hayes and Rickardd Weiley for selection in the First Class 21 Exhibition.
I would like to thank all Leaders of Learning, Leaders of Wellbeing & Engagement, teachers and support staff for their input into the award ceremonies which ran this week. Particular mention to Assistant Principals Theresa Avery and Phil Gibney, our 2022 Senior Student Leaders and Mr Jeremy Hobbes for their help in ensuring that all events ran smoothly throughout the week. We were particularly pleased to be able to welcome back our Senior Leaders of 2021, Patrick Guthridge, Lachlan Oliver & Hannah Van Arendonk who took part in the “badging” of the 2022 Leadership Team in a very significant and symbolic gesture of “handing on” the legacy of student leadership at St Clare’s High School.

Over the past few weeks, Leaders of Wellbeing & Engagement and Ministry Coordinator Denise Ryan have organised a series of reflection days that have allowed students some significant rites of passage as the school year drew to a close. Staff put a lot of energy into these events to ensure a happy and collaborative end to a difficult year. My thanks to all the pastoral teams across all year levels for their care and energy over the last month of the year.

Staff Farewells - Rhonda Stitt, Gabrielle McFarlane, Karen Kelly, Penny Wood & Simon Little
The St Clare’s toy drive for Vinnies was an outstanding success and is a wonderful expression of the real heart of the community which is willing to dig deep and help others at a time of great trauma for all in our area. Thanks to the School Vinnies group, Deacon Vince Ryan, Denise Ryan, Laura Boere, Bernadette Boere and all the students and families who supported this worthy cause.
As I close, I wish to acknowledge the wonderful support that the St Clare’s community has shown for staff and students during a very “topsy turvy” year. Parents, caregivers, staff and students have worked with diligence and sustained effort to ensure that learning remained the focus of our efforts while we did our best to keep all safe and well.
I wish all a healthy, safe and happy Christmas. I hope you experience peace of our Lord over the break and that the spirit of hope that the birth of Jesus generates a peaceful and predictable New Year for all in the St Clare’s community.
Thank you for all that you have brought to our school this year.
God bless
Peter Nicholls

Toy Drive Appreciation
A mufti-day in the rain to raise money for the Vinnie’s Toy Drive! Students and staff have been generously donating toys for those who are in need this Christmas. The Year 11 leaders were also selling soft drinks to raise more for this great cause!

Thank you to everyone for your wonderful generosity in supporting the Vinnies Toy Drive.
I know families will be delighted to be able to offer their children toys on Christmas morning.
The demand for support these last few weeks has been very high, and it is because you care enough that Vinnies can help and assist families in this special way.
Again, thank you!
May you all have a Happy, Holy and Blessed Christmas.

Reflection Day
On Friday, 10 December, Year 7 ventured out to Crowdy Head to participate in their 2021 Reflection Day. After a year of uncertainty and change it provided them with an opportunity to take some time out, reflect on the past, and look to the future. In addition, students were able to just be… enjoy each other’s company, develop a closer relationship with staff, and truly appreciate our beautiful surroundings. There was much fun and laughter and many wonderful memories were made.
A big thank you to the staff who attended: Ms O’Doherty, Mr Collier, Mr McDougall, Ms Boelling, Mrs Basile and Mrs Ryan.

Reflection Day
Year 9 spent an afternoon at the pool after their reflection day last week. It was great to see them just relaxing and enjoying each other’s company to end the year. A very big thank you to Mrs Lovern and all the teachers who supported Year 9 this year.

Science
The end of the year has finally arrived, and Year 9 Science 3 have been testing the knowledge they have obtained over the past term by doing some hands-on practical tasks.
The first task was making a solar oven. The task was to design it themselves using materials of their choice. The object was to see which oven would reach the highest temperature and thereby melting a marshmallow. The temperature was tested with a thermometer.
Callum Minett and Jahzara Neal made an oven which reached 69 degrees Celsius. Along with this one there were many successful models that were able to make the marshmallow very soft.
The second task was to build a tower that was the tallest and could carry the most weight. The only materials to be used were 20 straws and 30 cm of sticky tape. Once again this took much cooperation and skill to master the building. I was delighted with the way the students were able to think outside the box to come up with an effective building.

The most successful tower was made by Jake Byma and Braidyn Collins which was 40 cm tall and was able to hold 115 grams of weight. It was interesting to see the different ways the students approached the task.
It is wonderful to see students ‘thinking like scientists’. I encourage them to continue to do so during the holidays.

Stoney Aqua Park Community Day
Year 10 headed out to Stoney Aqua Park on Tuesday, 30 November for a wet and wild community day. Many students were humbled by the course, as they attempted to swing, dive and leap across obstacles only to find themselves in the drink. It was a fantastic day for Year 10 to enjoy each other's company, share a laugh and burn some energy before finishing off the term.
Thank you to Mrs Bronwen Davidson for all of your organisation. The students really appreciate everything you have done for them this year and the care you have shown.

Reflection Day
After a stressful week filled with HSC assessments, Year 11 got the chance to finally relax and spend the day at Crowdy. The weather was perfect for some beach cricket, tug of war and swimming.
Students also exchanged gifts with a whole year group Secret Santa organised earlier in the week. Everyone loved their presents, and this really encompassed the strong bond this year group has and will continue to develop as they look toward their senior retreat early next year.

Thank you to their Leader of Learning, Mr Todd Curtis, for your constant enthusiasm and support you have offered to this exceptional group of students. An additional thanks to the Year 11 Clare teachers for all your assistance.

Hospitality Happenings
Students have again been putting their skills into practise and as part of the St Clare's catering team; Year 11 students set for the Year 12 formal, held at the Taree Racecourse last Friday and conducted themselves in a very professional manner.
Once again, the students lead by example and received high praise from the Race Club, the RSL, and guests.
The students are to be congratulated on their effort.
Those students excelled themselves during the day, setting up the restaurant, the night, serving, cleaning tables, and in all the extra duties performed.
Students worked from 6 pm until 10 pm and were very professional in the manner in which they carried out their duties.

I would like to express my thanks to Karen McCann, Gabby McFarlane and Marian Parvin for all their help and leadership in the dining room, as the success of this function was due to their hard work and effective teamwork.

I was very proud of the students and would like to congratulate them.

OnSTAGE Selection
Congratulations to Morgan Gao who has been selected for OnSTAGE 2022. This is an incredible achievement and again highlights the calibre of Drama at St Clare’s as we have now had students selected for the program for the last five years!
Morgan’s piece, “Our World is far too Noisy” is a moving and powerful comment on the invasion of culture and focusses on a photographer that seeks to expose an Amazon tribe to the world. This piece is a credit to Morgan challenging himself to create an innovative theatre experience by integrating pre-recorded sound effects into his narrative and meticulously timing every movement to each audio cue.
Morgan was one of only four monologues selected, which again is recognition for his effort. We wish him all the best when he takes to the stage at the Seymour Centre in Sydney next February.

The final edition for 2021- Wow! Where did that go?
I am going to begin this edition with an email that Mr Masters sent to all Year 12 2021 Graduates containing some very important information:
- You have access to email until the start of February 2021, it would be great if you check it from time to time.
- Many of you have picked up your sign-out forms, but are yet to return them. Part of the sign-out process is also returning your library books. Many of these books are urgently needed by the Year 11 students and they are needed back ASAP. Can you make this a priority for next week (The earlier the better, as you might remember Mrs Kelly is retiring and is hoping to have all her loose ends tied up). (A copy was attached to the email you received for you to print out at home - parents will need to sign it). Thanks to those who have already completed this process.
- Your ATARs are released on Thursday, 20 January, and your HSC results are released on Monday, 24 January.
- Between receiving your ATAR and the 24th, we’re asking that you send a text message or email with your ATAR and your intention for next year. For some of you, it might be: “ATAR 83, Bachelor of ___________ at Newcastle University”. For others, it might be: “Non-ATAR, pursuing an electrical apprenticeship or gap year working at Coles”. Whatever it might be, we’d love to know the path you’re taking. This can be emailed or sent via text to either myself or Mrs McCann.
- Tim Masters: 0421 961 043
- Karen McCann: 0408 144 453
- Mrs McCann and I are also super happy to be used as referees for your jobs. You have both our emails, and you can use our numbers. Just send us a message to say you’ve popped us down so we can expect the call.
- On 24 January, Mrs McCann and I will be on site from 8 am to 11:30 am. If you want to pop in to say, ‘Hey’ we’d love to hear from you. The staff carpark will be open, and we’ll probably set up in the conference room in the main office. This is the day we celebrate your results – the more the merrier!
- One of our super results is already in, Morgan Gao has been selected to participate in OnSTAGE for his individual Drama performance. The young man you voted, ‘most likely to become a celebrity’ is going to performing in front of millions of people next February. Congratulations!
- Photographs: Callam Howard did a super job with our formal photos, please make sure you download them. We can’t get a link to your parents as Compass has removed you all, but if you could please pass this on, I’m sure they’d love to see the images.
- Photographs 2: We have our Memory Lane OneNote, if you would like to download it, you can. You select File à Export à (Select Entire Notebook) and you can download it as a PDF or as a OneNote.
- On Tuesday, 8 February we are holding our Dux Assembly. If you think this might be you, can you tentatively write this date down. We’d love you to attend to receive your award. I’d also love for many of our Year 12s to be on site if you’re around as a catch-up and for you to talk to and discuss your experiences with the Year 11/12 students. Obviously, many of you are moving away, but if you’re local at the time, GREAT!
Thanks Mr Masters for doing such an excellent job with this cohort. I am looking forward to seeing their results and finding out what pathways they will pursue post school. I am more than happy to assist whenever possible so please do not hesitate to contact me if you need any help.
The Year 12 Grad was excellent. Congratulations, Year 12, on completing your schooling!
I am very hopeful that Work Experience will be back on the table in 2022, COVID Restrictions willing. I will keep you posted in early 2022 and I will have the paperwork ready to go.
I would like to thank all the employers who have taken our students for Work Experience and Work Placement this year when it was able to occur. You have provided our students with an excellent opportunity to see what the ‘world of work’ is really like. Thank you.
