Dear Parents & Friends of St Clare’s
Welcome to Term 3! I hope you and your loved ones are fit, safe and well.
Students and staff have ‘hit the ground running’ and the newsletter contains a wide range of reports that highlight the learning undertaken by your sons and daughters, inside and outside the classroom. These activities have continued despite the negative influence of COVID-19 on our community and I thank staff, parents and students for their persistence during testing times.
The enrolment process is well underway, with school tours and interviews occurring each week. If you know someone who is intending to enrol their son or daughter at the school, could you encourage them to ring the school office and request an enrolment package. School tours can be organised via a phone call to Office Manager Anne Havard.
Technology plays an important part in our lives. The use of personal devices to complete banking, pay bills, keep a diary or book a holiday has become an accepted part of daily life. The school’s Bring Your Own Device Policy extends the use of technology into the classroom and ensures that our students are taught to be able to navigate their way in the cyber world. An important aspect of this process is each person’s development of an understanding of what it means to be ‘cyber literate’: a person who knows how to be a good and respectful citizen within cyberspace. Our staff put considerable effort into ensuring the young people in our care use the excellent resources of the net in ways that ensure that they are respectful cybercitizens.
Term 3 is a special time in the lives of our Year 12 students. After 13 years of formal education, senior students are within 10 school weeks of completing secondary education. Next week the HSC students sit their HSC trials, an important juncture for them as they receive feedback on their level of knowledge and fine tune their exam technique before the HSC exams in October. The weeks following the trials offer a wonderful opportunity for students to improve their skills and study hard for their final exams in Term 4.
The Year 11 2023 subject selection parent evening will be held on Tuesday, 2 August at 6:30 pm in the Josephite Learning Centre. The meeting compliments the student/staff mentoring program and gives parents the opportunity to gain information and ask questions about Stage 6 education at St Clare’s.
The NAIDOC Week Assembly is an important date on the school calendar. Out of respect to the passing of local Elder Aunty Wilma Morcome, we postponed the St Clare’s NAIDOC Week Assembly until further into the school year. I will advise when we have fixed a date for this important community gathering.
In closing, I would like to thank Fr Kevin Corrigan, Ministry Coordinator Jason Koenig, staff and students for their participation in the school’s religious education and liturgical program. The development of reflective and spiritual practice amongst our young people is an important aspect of personal development and contributes greatly to a citizenry that is kind, inclusive and respectful of others.
God Bless

St Clare's Laptop Purchase Scheme-Option
St Clare’s is a BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) school, where students attending are expected to have a laptop with them each day. This device needs to be charged and fully functional to assist the school in providing the best learning outcomes for your child.
Over a student’s time at St Clare’s, it is expected that a device suited to junior school (Years 7-9) would initially be purchased and then an upgraded device, more suited to a child’s elective choices, would be purchased for senior years (Years 10-12).
For many parents, purchasing a laptop is a daunting task with the industry full of jargon and quickly changing technologies. To assist parents/guardians, the school provides a list of minimum specifications each year.
Last year the school entered a partnership with a provider who offers high quality commercial grade devices backed by three-year next Business Day Warranty (including battery) and accidental damage insurance (ADP) covering three (3) claims at no excess over the three-year contract.
Representatives of the Diocesan IT team and St Clare’s IT Team investigated numerous devices and chose devices to offer which proved the best overall product in terms of cost, serviceability, features, and support. This took a high degree of anguish away from parents in the purchase of a laptop.
This company offers payment plans and payment schedules to suit families of varying incomes.
An information evening will be held to offer parents more information regarding the specifications for devices for parents of all students for 2023. Ordering will take place Term 3 with delivery in the first week of school 2023, allowing the payments to be spread over time.
Whilst this scheme is not compulsory, the quality and peace of mind this scheme offers has been noted and this has assisted teachers in best servicing your child’s needs.

Federal Government Support for Year 9 Excursion
Next week, students from our school will undertake an education tour of the national capital. Students will be given the opportunity to participate in a variety of educational programs with a focus on Australia’s history, culture, heritage, and democracy.
The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the national capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education. To assist families in meeting the cost of the excursion the Australian Government is contributing funding of $45 per student under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate program towards those costs. The rebate is paid directly to the school upon completion of the excursion.

Australian Geography Competition 2022
Geography students from St Clare’s tested their geographical skills and knowledge against students from all around Australia in the 2022 Australian Geography Competition. Due to COVID and floods the release of the results was delayed. After a long wait we finally received the results, and it is pleasing to see how students performed. We had a number of student geographers at our school who performed very well in the Competition this year with four high distinctions, one distinction, six credits and 14 students who received participation awards.
Back Row: Benjamin Cooper, Archer Murray, Connor Stace, Elise Miles & Flynn Small
Front Row: Cornell Estibeiro, William Gibson, Charli McLane, Alexander Saville & Leo Small
Nearly 70,000 students from across Australia entered the Australian Geography Competition so the results give us an external benchmark as to how are students are going in certain aspects of geography.
Rachel Honey, the Competitions National Coordinator said, “The Competition aims to encourage student interest in geography and to reward student excellence.”
“Geography is an important subject because it brings together the physical and human dimensions of our environment, helping students to develop a deeper understanding of our world and the challenges it faces” said Mrs Honey
Congratulations to all students who participated in the Competition.
A big thank you to Mrs Tilbrook who helped supervise students with Education Perfect.

Australian Mathematics Competition
The Australian Mathematics Competition (AMC) will take place on Friday, 5 August (Week 3, Term 3). This is a slight change to the date that was advertised in Term 2. Students who submitted their permission notes are encouraged to keep an eye on their Compass Newsfeed, early next week, for further information relating to the competition.
Any student interested in extra practice material can speak with their Mathematics teacher who can organise these resources.
Here is an example of the type of problem that you could expect to solve. This was taken from the 2014 edition of the AMC.

Mathematics at St Clare's High School
Just a short note about mathematics workshop, Wednesday lunchtimes in Room 10.
Due to staffing issues and a lack of attendance by students, I have made the decision to cancel mathematics workshop for the rest of the year.
If a student needs assistance with any of their work, their classroom teacher is more than happy to help.
May I just suggest that students give their teacher some prior warning, as meetings and playground duties do come up and we want students to have the help they need.
If your teacher is unavailable, please email your teacher or another teacher may be able to assist.
All the best, take care.

Students have been enjoying the beginning of Term 3 in the science classroom.
7SCI6 have been learning about cells and investigated the parts of the microscope at different stations.

9SCI5 have been learning about senses and reaction and completed an eye dissection but the pictures are too gruesome to share.
10SCI1 have been investigating genetics and how traits are inherited and completed a Punnett Square activity using liquid chalk marker to work in groups to determine what traits their child monster would receive.

12EES have been investigating the process of rehabilitating a mine and preparing for their upcoming trial exam.

RSL and Schools Remember ANZAC Art Competition for 2023
The RSL and Schools Remember ANZAC Commemoration was first held in 1953, co-hosted by RSL NSW and the Department of Education. Over the years the service has expanded to Catholic Schools NSW and the Association of Independent Schools NSW.
Proceedings, held at the Anzac Memorial Hyde Park in April each year, are delivered entirely by school students including the Master of Ceremonies, keynote address, readings, and musical accompaniment. The Service also includes an Inspection of the Guard by the official party, The Ode, The Last Post, and Rouse.
The service aims to educate primary and secondary school students about Australia’s military history, whilst paying respect to the service and sacrifice of servicemen and women of the Australian Defence Force.
To mark the 70th Anniversary of this service RSL NSW, the Department of Education, Catholic Schools NSW and the Association of Independent Schools NSW are launching an art competition to NSW school students. Two artworks will be selected for the cover of the 2023 service program.
All finalists’ artwork will be displayed at the ANZAC Memorial and included in the program.
The Order of Service or program historically has had an image on the front cover on a rotation system. These images have included poppies, Cobbers sculpture at Australian Memorial Park in Fromelles and the ANZACs statue in Gallipoli.
More information including the guidelines, how to submit artwork, judging and FAQs can be collected from Mrs Huett in the Staffroom at recess or lunch.
The competition closes on Friday, 16 September.

Manning School Futsal Titles
Congratulations to our 19’s school Futsal team, who recently competed in the Manning School Futsal Titles. Our team played with terrific determination, sportsmanship and skill throughout all their matches, going through the day undefeated!
All players were terrific throughout the day with dominating attacking performances and strong defence across all their pool matches, which resulted in comprehensive 5-2 and 8-2 victories over Taree High 19’s and 16’s respectively. St Clare’s’ dominance continued with 9-1 and 13-2 victories over Bulahdelah 19’s and 16’s teams with all St Clare’s players contributing with every players’ name being etched onto the goal scorers sheet. St Clare’s saved their best performance of the day for the final against Taree High 19’s, where they displayed outstanding attacking flare which lead to numerous terrific team goals, with the team finishing with a comprehensive and emphatic 6-2 victory. St Clare’s now progress to the Australasian Champion of Champions finals to be held in Brisbane later in the year, congratulations and well done!
Lastly, a big thank you to Mr Laurent Gonfond for his tireless efforts in coaching our school Futsal team, it’s very much appreciated by everyone involved.

13’s & 18’s Country Cup Rugby League Regional Finals
Congratulations to our 13’s & 18’s boys Rugby League teams, who travelled up to Port Macquarie to compete in the Regional Final of the Country Cup on Thursday, 23 June. Both teams showcased strong defensive efforts under fatigue, toughness and attacking running games throughout all their matches, with some high quality rugby league played.
The 13’s started their campaign against John Paul College, where they endured a torrid start conceding three quick tries in the opening minutes of the first half. However, the boys gradually played their way back into the game before half time with strong tackle busting runs, tightened defensive efforts and some well-structured attacking plays. St Clare’s started the second half strongly with two quick tries of their own, however John Paul College ran out eventual 24-14 winners. Their second round match against Mackillop College saw an improved defensive attitude from the start of the game which led to St Clare’s dominating ball and field possession for large parts of the match. St Clare’s dominated the match and scoreboard, scoring some highly entertaining team tries to run away 36-0 winners. St Clare’s third and final match was against a skilful and well-disciplined St Joseph’s Regional College. Costly errors and cheap turnovers in their own half saw St Joseph’s capitalise on these mistakes and hurt them on the scoreboard with numerous first and second half tries. St Joseph’s came away comprehensive 20-0 victors.
The 18’s boys opened up their account against the highly fancied and well drilled Newman College. In what was an end to end and highly entertaining match, St Clare’s endured and held out multiple attacking raids on their try line and were deservingly awarded with a length of the field breakaway try to open the scoring early in the second half. St Clare’s held their nerve in the second half to come away 10-nil victors. St Clare’s faced Melville High School in their second match, in what was a dire opening half for St Clare’s, which saw them commit several ball handling errors and missed tackles which led to Melville jumping out to a 12-nil lead. St Clare’s regrouped at half time and came out firing in the second half, putting together two well-structured team tries to claw their way back into the game and eventually take the lead 16-12. Melville scored a late try with 5 minutes left in the match to level the scores 16-all. In a highly entertaining last couple of minutes which saw both teams have game clinching tries come up agonisingly short, Melville were awarded a penalty on fulltime in front of the St Clare’s posts clinching the game 18-16. St Clare’s third and final game was against Mackillop. In what was a physical encounter, injuries, fatigue and several cramping players took its toll on the St Clare’s team. The boys never gave up and scrambled to save multiple attacking raids on their try line. However, St Clare’s eventually succumbed to the consistent attacking pressure, losing the match 26-16.
Lastly, a big thank you to Mrs Parvin as well as Lachlan Monks and Will Hogan who contributed as trainers and water runners for their time and dedication in training, coaching and supporting our teams, without their outstanding and tireless efforts events such as this would not be possible.

Year 7/8 and Year 9/10 All Schools Touch
Congratulations to our Year 7/8 and Year 9/10 All Schools girls and boys Touch Football teams, who travelled up to Port Macquarie for the regional championships on Tuesday, 28 June and Wednesday, 29 June. Both the girls and boys’ teams played with terrific spirit and sportsmanship, playing some entertaining and skilful Touch Football across the entire two days.

Year 7/8 All Schools Touch

Year 9/10 All Schools Touch
The St Clare’s Year 7/8 girls team played amazingly throughout the day, going through all six pool matches undefeated! The girls game up against St Joseph’s Regional College in their opening round fixture, where after a slow start found their groove and came away with a hard fought 2-1 victory. St Clare’s second round fixture was against perennial favourites MacKillop. In what was a high quality and skilful encounter which saw many enterprising attacking plays, St Clare’s finished the game with a well-deserved 1-1 draw. St Clare’s came up against arch nemesis Taree High in their third round encounter. The match was a see-sawing, end to end game with great defensive efforts from both teams on their own try lines. St Clare’s led 3-1 for the majority of the match before conceding late to eventually take the match 3-2. St Clare’s came away with comprehensive victories against Hasting 7-0, Camden Haven 4-0 and Manning Valley Anglican College 5-0 in their remaining pool matches. In the final, St Clare’s came up against their earlier opponents from the pool stage, MacKillop. A tired St Clare’s outfit could not match their earlier efforts against the fast finishing MacKillop, who ran away comprehensive 6-1 winners. The St Clare’s girls should be proud of their amazing efforts throughout the day and have now qualified for the state finals to be held on the Central Coast later in the year. Well done girls!
Year 7/8 All Schools Touch - Girls
The St Clare’s Year 7/8 boys came up against two well drilled and skilled teams in their opening two fixtures against St Joseph’s Regional College and MacKillop, going down 7-1 and 6-0 respectively. St Clare’s picked themselves up in their third and fourth round encounters against Camden Haven and Hastings with improved defensive efforts and team cohesion in attack, however eventually going down 3-2 and 5-2 respectively. St Clare’s came up against competition favourites Taree High in their fifth match of the day. After a strong start culminating in 2 early tries, Taree High flexed their muscle and ran away 6-2 victors. St Clare’s finished the day against Manning Valley Anglican College in what was a free flowing entertaining game which saw multiple lead changes, MVAC eventually winning the game 3-2.
Year 7/8 All Schools Touch - Boys
The St Clare’s Year 9/10 girls team started their campaign with a well-deserved 1-0 victory over Camden Haven. However, the girls were dealt a reality check in their next 3 pool matches against Taree High, Hastings and St Joseph’s Regional College, going down 6-1, 4-1 and 8-0 respectively. The girls progressively improved throughout the day with their defensive efforts and attacking formations and saved their best performance for their final match of the day against MacKillop. Although the girls went down 3-1 in the end, their attitude and determination not to give up saw the match in the balance 1-1 for the majority of the game, however MacKillop were too strong in the end.
Year 9/10 All Schools Touch – Girls
The St Clare’s Year 9/10 boys team came up against Hastings in their opening round fixture. In a highly entertaining match filled with attacking flare, St Clare’s combined to score multiple team tries to come away comprehensive 5-2 winners. Just like the girls, St Clare’s struggled against competition heavy weights Taree High School, St Joseph Regional College and MacKillop in their next three pool matches, which saw them endure comprehensive 6-0, 4-1 and 5-0 losses respectively. The pain continued for St Clare’s in their fifth round match against Camden Haven, who surprised with their consistent attacking raids and skilful play to come away with a comprehensive 7-1 victory. St Clare’s finished the day against Manning Valley Anglican College. In a much improved team effort, the boys scored 2 early tries to take the lead 2-1, however costly errors in the end derailed their attacking efforts, letting in a couple of late tries to eventually lose 3-2.
Year 9/10 All Schools Touch – Boys
Lastly, a big thank you to Mrs Parvin as well as Sara Harris, Marley Brown, Troy Wright and Sam Schilt who contributed as referees for their time and dedication in training, coaching and supporting our team, without their outstanding and tireless efforts events such as this would not be possible.

Careers Corner
Welcome back to Term 3. It has been lovely to see the sunshine this week.
I would like to thank Mr Hobbes for the work he is doing with Year 7 this year. He is running a “Careers” lesson with them each week using a program called “Become Me”.
Current research is showing that the earlier students are exposed to Careers Education the better their choices and post school pathway options will be.
This doesn’t mean that they will be asked what they want to do when they leave school, but rather to focus on their strengths and identify what their likes and dislikes are. It is important to recognize the influences in our lives and how that can affect us.
Year 10 have begun a series of sessions aimed at helping them make decisions about their subject choices for next year. These mentoring sessions involve groups of about 6/7 students working with a teacher and talking about options for Year 11 and 12. Each student is asked to complete a booklet either in hard copy or in the Careers Team OneNote. I will be collecting these at the end of the sessions in three weeks and this information will assist me to help the students over the coming time.
The Senior Studies Information Evening for Year 10 students and parents is being held at school on Tuesday, 2 August at 6:30 pm. Mrs Theresa Avery and several staff will be on hand to explain the process of choosing subjects for senior school and providing information about the many subjects on offer at St Clare’s. The information is on Compass and has been given to the students.
Please remember that I am available to help with this process, be it with the students or with students and parents/guardians. The students can write their names on the timetable on my office door or feel free to contact me on 6552 3300 and make an appointment.
We will be continuing Careers Sessions with Year 11 students Day 2 (Tuesdays) during the Period 3 session. As the end of Preliminary Studies is near many students have to make decisions about discontinuing some subjects and working more towards a post school pathway. Once again if anyone would like to contact me for assistance please do so.
I have noticed that the students in Year 12 are gradually registering with UAC and several have already applied for SRS (Schools Recommendation Scheme). You were sent an email regarding dates so please check this. I have also put this information in the Careers OneNote along with a PowerPoint with more information.
Please also remember to check the various university websites for Early Entry opportunities. These opportunities are opening up for 2023. Much of this information is also available in our Careers Team OneNote.
