Dear Parents, Carers and Community Members
At the start of Lenten period, I wrote this in the school newsletter.
‘Lent is not just about giving up something like chocolate, social media for a short period of time. It is an opportunity to make positive change in our own lives, making a positive difference in someone else’s life, either it be someone we know, someone we don’t know, someone we don’t like, or someone that lives kilometres away that is simply in need.’
We now come to the end of the period of Lent, Easter, a time where we celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ, a time to remember the ultimate sacrifice that Jesus made on the cross for our humanity and reflect on the positive difference Jesus made in other people’s lives before and after his resurrection. It is a time to reflect on the values Jesus taught, one of love, forgiveness, and compassion that are central to our catholic faith.
Easter is a time of hope and renewal for many people around the world, but as individuals I believe it is also a time where we can take a step back and reflect on the sacrifices we have made leading up to Jesus’ resurrection and the positive impact our sacrifices may have had in our lives and the lives of others during Lent. The hope is that the students of St Clare’s have learnt something about themselves during this time of giving and sacrifice that will impact them positively as they move through the rest of 2023.

A few reminders for parents and students:
- Term 2 starts on Wednesday, 26 April for all students.
- ANZAC day on Tuesday, 25 April. This is a significant day for all Australians as we take time to remember the men and women who went to war to protect our country and freedoms. At St Clare’s we have a long history of supporting this day by participating in the Local Taree march. I encourage all our students to come along and march with us as a school community and show your respect to our diggers both past and present. We have always had a strong representation on this day, and I hope this continues this year. If you cannot come to the Taree march, take the time to attend your local service in school uniform.
- Year 7 to 11 Parent, Student, Teacher interview day is on Thursday, 4 May. You will be notified shortly regarding bookings which are made through the Compass portal. Year 7 to 11 will have no classes on this day, Year 12 will have classes as normal.
Lastly, can I thank all community members especially parents, carers and students for their continued support for St Clare’s, you are what makes this school great. Thank you must also go to all the teaching and support staff at the school, who have worked tirelessly to ensure all students receive the best education possible.
Whether you celebrate Easter as a religious holiday or simply enjoy the festivities and traditions, I wish you a peaceful and joyful time surrounded by your loved ones.
May this Easter bring you renewed hope, happiness, and prosperity in all aspects of your life.
Yours in Christ

Throughout the term, Year 7 and 8 have undertaken food practicals to continue to develop knowledge and skills in the kitchen. Last lesson they made pancakes, and they thoroughly enjoyed this process. They all had to measure out their own ingredients and follow the recipe to produce and plate a delicious serving of pancakes.

U13 Boy’s Futsal Regional Championships
On Monday, 3 April the U13 boy’s futsal team travelled to Port Macquarie to compete in the regional championships. They performed admirably in the morning, drawing their first game against MacKillop College 2-2 and winning 3-0 in their second game against Hastings Secondary College. They progressed second in their group on for and against and met another team from MacKillop College in a closely contested quarter final, conceding two late goals to exit the tournament.
The boys gave their everything all day and can hold their heads up high after a series of excellent performances. Congratulations to the team for their positive spirit all day, and representing the school with pride. A big thank you to all parents/carers who helped out with transport and support.

Eastcoast School Futsal Titles
Congratulations to our 16’s girls and 19’s boys school Futsal teams, who recently travelled up to Port Macquarie to compete in the Eastcoast School Futsal Titles. Both teams played with terrific determination, sportsmanship and skill throughout all their matches, with some highly entertaining Futsal played.
Our 16’s girls displayed amazing determination, outstanding resilience and exceptional levels of skill to go through all five of their pool matches undefeated! This was a feat made all the more amazing considering the girls had never played Futsal together before.
All players were terrific throughout the day with dominating attacking performances and strong defence across all their pool matches. St Clare’s came away with hard fought, come from behind victories over Camden Haven High School 3-2 and Melville High School 2-1 in their opening two fixtures.
St Clare’s third and fourth round matches resulted in comprehensive 3-0 and 2-0 victories over Hastings College and St Columba Anglican School respectively. St Clare’s faced off against competition heavy weights and the undefeated Bellingen High School in their final pool game. In what was a highly entertaining end to end match, both schools came away with a well-deserved 1-1 draw.
St Clare’s came up against Melville High School in their semi-final in what was a defence dominated game with limited attacking opportunities, St Clare’s triumphed with a late goal to seal their spot in the final 1-0.
St Clare’s played arch nemesis Bellingen High School in the final in a high quality fast paced encounter. Fatigue and defensive lapses saw St Clare’s concede two early goals, however St Clare’s slowly clawed their way back into the match with long periods of ball possession and attacking opportunities. This led to St Clare’s scoring late in the match, however Bellingen held on 2-1 to come away with the title and crowned champions.
Back Row (L-R): Mr Collier, Ashlee Brabant, Grace Randall, Maya Ljumanovic & Marissa Masterantonio
Front Row (L-R): Gemma Eady-Muxlow, Elise Zammit & Claire Downie
St Clare’s 19’s team also went through all six of their pool matches undefeated, with St Clare’s coming away with emphatic 5-0 victories in their opening two fixtures against Hastings West Port and St Columba Anglican School Blue respectively.
St Clare’s played cross town rivals Manning Valley Anglican College in their third round encounter. Poor ball control and passing inaccuracy saw St Clare’s turn over possession multiple times, gifting MVAC multiple attacking and scoring opportunities. This constant attacking barrage saw St Clare’s finally concede late in the match. However, a never give up attitude saw St Clare’s pounce on a goal scoring opportunity in the dying seconds of the match to end the game 1-1.
St Clare’s bounced back to their dominating attacking ways in their third round match against Melville High School, with St Clare’s coming away with a comprehensive 3-0 victory.
St Clare’s faced off against St Columba Anglican School Silver and Bellingen High School in their last two fixtures of the pool stage. Both matches were tightly contested with multiple attacking opportunities created by all teams. St Clare’s secured a 1-1 draw against SCAS Silver with an equalising goal with the final kick of the game and a 2-1 come from behind victory over Bellingen High School.
St Clare’s came up against competition heavy weights MacKillop College in their semi-final match. In what was a high quality and physical encounter, both teams withstood numerous attacking raids with impenetrable scrambling defensive efforts. The match ended 0-0 after regular time with the match to be decided in golden goal extra time or penalties. St Clare’s heartbreakingly conceded a free kick in front of their goal with seconds left in extra time, MacKillop subsequently converted this goal scoring opportunity to win the match 1-0 and advance to the final.
(L-R): Jai Payne, Drew Cini, Darcy Eady-Muxlow, Matthew Spiteri, Connor Clarke, Harry Miller, Saffron Grass & Ryan Martin
Lastly, a big thank you to the parents who travelled on the day to support our teams and to Mr Laurent Gonfond for his tireless efforts in coaching our school Futsal teams, it’s very much appreciated by everyone involved.

Northern NSWCCC Rugby League Selection Trials
Congratulations to Rory Clarke who recently travelled up to South West Rocks for the Northern NSWCCC Rugby League selection trials after being selected as part of the Maitland/Newcastle Diocesan U15’s Boy’s Rugby League team. Rory represented the school and his respective team with terrific athleticism, skill and sportsmanship throughout the selection trial. Rory’s strong and tireless defensive efforts, coupled with his high quality ball carrying and line running ability, resulted in Rory scoring two outstanding individual tries. Rory’s strong individual performance was rewarded with selection in the Northern NSWCCC team to compete at the NSWCCC selection trials at St Mary’s in Sydney later in the year. Congratulations and well done Rory!

Careers Corner
We have made it to the end of Term 1 – where has the time gone?!
I would like to start this edition of Careers Corner with a HUGE THANKS to Mr Laurent and the Year 10 and Year 12 Hospitality students who catered for one of the dinners at the local Tastefest.
The photos speak for themselves.

Maureen Eason had this to say about Laurent and the students:
Don’t you just love it when a plan comes together and becomes a wonderful event. This of course happens with much hard work and planning and then everyone involved on the night plays their part with precision and much enjoyment.
A huge THANK YOU to the Tastefest Committee for asking Taree Quota Club to become involved with the Producer’s Dinner last night and for their preparation to ensuring this to be a huge success as it has always been in previous years.
To chef Laurent and your fantastic band of young St Clare’s High School pupils whom you must be so proud of, we owe you our gratitude as you are the reason the guests keep wanting to be part of this night year after year.
WELL DONE - a wonderful meal Laurent and thanks for making sure the workers also got to enjoy your cuisine.
And I must add- what a wonderful backdrop the beautiful Manning River makes!
The Year 12 VET students will be going on Work Placement next term. The Year 12 Construction class will be out during Week 2. Thanks to Mid Coast Connect and the many employers for allowing this to happen. This is an excellent opportunity for the students to learn more of the world of work and often results in job opportunities for each of the students.
The Year 12 Hospitality class are flying to the Gold Coast and will be working at Sea World from Monday, 8 May until Thursday, 11 May inclusive. Once again this is an excellent opportunity for the students to learn about and experience first-hand the many different aspects of the Hospitality industry.
Year 12 students who are interested in a university pathway post school are reminded to check each university’s website for early application and scholarship information. UAC has opened. All students should have received a PIN from UAC – please check your junk mail if you have not received this yet. Please email me if you do not receive a PIN even if you do not want to go to university post school.
I will be making the latest information available regarding SRS, EAS and Equity Scholarships as soon as it is posted on the UAC site.
Please note that other states do not have their applications open yet (QTAC, VTAC, SATAC) and will open at various stages over the coming months.
- Undergraduate applications open for domestic students on Wednesday, 5 April 2023. UAC PINs will be emailed to NSW HSC and ACT Senior Secondary Certificate students on the same day.
- Undergraduate applications open for international students on Wednesday, 19 April 2023.
- This year’s UAC Guide will be delivered to schools in Term 2.
- Resources on the UAC website will be updated in April.
Each of the students will receive their UAC guide early next term. As soon as they arrive at school they will be distributed to the students. There is a great deal of information in this booklet which can also be accessed from the UAC site (www.uac.gov.au).
Job Jump also has a great deal of information with regard to this, so don’t forget to check out the chapters in our Careers Team OneNote.
Next term we will continue to have Industry visits on Friday mornings.
Students in Year 12 who might be considering careers in medicine or dentistry post school need to register for the “UCAT” (University Clinical Aptitude Test ANZ).
