Dear Parents & Friends of St Clare’s
Welcome to the final newsletter for Semester 1 2021.
It has been a pleasure to meet and talk with the families of the young people seeking to enrol at St Clare’s as part of the Year 7 cohort of 2022. Enrolment numbers are strong and we look forward to continuing the interview process for enrolments over the first few weeks of Term 3. If you have a friend or family member who is yet to make arrangements for enrolment, please encourage them to ring the St Clare’s Office and make an appointment for an enrolment interview.
The recent rainfall and closure of the local sporting fields meant that we were not be able to hold our annual Athletics Carnival. Aside from missing a great community building day, the cancellation of the event has ramifications for those athletes looking to progress to regional and state athletic events. Usually their personal best from the previous season would serve as a guide, but as we know the COVID-19 lockdown in 2020 ensured that large scale sporting events were not held. No doubt the representative sporting community is wrestling with the problem and will supply some guidelines in the not too distant future.
Thank you to the parents who offered some feedback regarding the recent Year 7 to 11 Parent/Teacher/Student Interviews. Much of the feedback was positive although a few parents raised issues around the length of the individual interview times and the starting and finishing times of the day. This feedback will help inform discussion with staff and the formation of our next Parent/Teacher/Student Interview session.

This Wednesday, Fr George conducted mass for a group of Year 9 students. The sharing of prayer time together and receiving of the Eucharist is an important part of the learning that takes place at St Clare’s. While many students are conversant with the Catholic Faith and traditions some are less so and I thank Ministry Coordinator Denise Ryan, staff member Laura Boere, members of the Religious Education Department, Deacon Vince Ryan and Fr George for their considerable work and effort in helping our young people to learn and grow in faith.
Due to COVID-19 restrictions in 2020, this year’s annual Snowy/Canberra Excursion will include students from Years 9 and 10. While planning for this year’s trip is well advanced, we are watching the events in Sydney with some anxiety and recognise that our plans are subject to change at short notice, should the COVID pandemic ‘again’ cause closure of state and territory borders. My thanks to Camp organiser Mr Phill Carney and Pastoral Coordinators Nicole Lovern, Year 9 and Bronwen Davidson, Year 10 for their work in preparing our young people for their snow adventure.
As we approach the holiday period, it is sobering for our HSC students to consider that they have approximately ten weeks of formal lessons to complete before they sit their HSC exams. The holidays offer a great opportunity for students to solidify their learning, identify gaps in their knowledge and work with diligence and sustained effort to make the most of their skills and talents. I encourage all parents and caregivers to have a conversation around how our senior students will use their holiday period to ensure that they are best prepared for the final few weeks of HSC study.
I urge all parents to pay careful attention to the NSW Government COVID-19 guidelines and to be aware that activities undertaken during the holidays could affect a student’s ability to attend school at the beginning of Term 3.
Thank you to all parents and carers for your support of the school. I hope you and your family have a safe and restful holiday period and that your sons and daughters return refreshed on Tuesday, 13 July for another wonderful term of learning.
God bless
Peter Nicholls

Special General Meeting
Over a long period of time, the St Clare’s Parents & Friends group has served as a fundraiser and an important forum for discussing issues of concern to the school community.
Over recent years it has become very difficult to find office bearers and achieve a quorum at the P & F’s regular meetings.
Last night we held a P & F meeting to discuss a new model of parent and carer engagement for St Clare’s High School. Unfortunately, the response to that meeting was very limited.
The purpose of this letter is to give notice for a Special General Meeting of the members of the P & F Association (which includes all parents and carers of students at St Clare’s High School Taree) for the purpose of discussing the future of the St Clare’s High School Taree P & F Association and to consider a path forward. The P & F Association currently has funds in its account, however, these are unable to be accessed as a quorum has been unable to be achieved for some time resulting in decisions not being able to be made.
Cath Garrett-Jones, the Family Engagement Officer at the Catholic Schools Office will be available to talk briefly about the options available at that meeting and to answer any questions.
What is the Parent Engagement Group (PEG) Model all about?
The Federation of Parents and Friends have developed a new model of engagement called PEG – Parent Engagement Group.
This model is reflected in our recent move towards dedicated evenings for parents and community members to be held at the school. This model allows parents and carers to build their capacity to be more deeply engaged in their child’s learning and to participate in some opportunities to be involved in decision making in the school.
A PEG meeting could typically include:
- Formal Welcome
- Acknowledgement of Country
- Prayer
- Apologies/Principal’s Report
- Educative component - The Educative Component is intended to be an opportunity for parents and carers to engage more deeply in their child's learning. A PEG could include a presentation about an aspect of the curriculum such as Senior Academic Writing, supporting BYOD and research into cyberspace. It could also include expert advice on Adolescent wellbeing and development or Cyber Safety for teens and their families. Guest speakers and expert commentary would be part of this initiative.
- Questions with notice submitted one week prior to the meeting to the Principal.
- Details of the next meeting including the identification of some learning parents and carers would like to participate in.
It is envisaged that PEG sessions would happen at least every term and does not rely upon parents or carers to take on Executive roles. If any funds are raised by the PEG, they are to be utilised and managed in accordance with the P & F Association Constitution and only used for the purpose of education.
I look forward to meeting with you on Monday, 12 July in the Josephite Centre.
Should you have any concerns or questions about this process, please do not hesitate to contact me or alternatively Cath Garrett-Jones on E: cath.garrett-jones@mn.catholic.edu.au or 4979 1303.

With the weather becoming colder there are members of our community struggling with these dropping temperatures.
To help all of these people, Vinnie’s are in desperate need of blankets, jumpers and jackets.
The Vinnie’s school conference encourages you to help out. By donating these warm items, we are able to help these community members in need.

Careers Corner
The end of Term 2 is at hand and so we are half way through the year. Students and teachers are very much looking forward to the holidays.
White Card Course
As I mentioned in the last chapter of Careers Corner, we have the opportunity to take advantage of the Government’s subsidised White Card Course. We are offering this via a company called Men at Work and will be running the course on Wednesday, 21 July. We were hoping to run two courses and involve students in Year 9, unfortunately the subsidy only covers those students who will be turning 16 or above this year. We will look at running another course at the end of the year which will cost approximately $125 for the students.
The White Card is necessary to be able to do Work Experience in any aspect of the Construction Industry and is a compulsory component of the Certificate II in Construction Pathways course which is offered in Year 11 and Year 12 at St Clare’s.
There is a Careers OneNote for students in Years 10, 11 and 12. Have a look at this as there may be information about something you would like to do and have not considered.
I will continue to bombard the students with emails as soon as I receive relevant information. So please check your emails carefully so that you don’t miss out on an opportunity if it becomes available.
University Early Entry/Scholarships
Several universities are now open for early entry and several of these universities have their early entry separate from UAC. UNE, Southern Cross and Charles Sturt have various pathways and are worth considering (if not your first choice) as a back-up if you don’t get your first choice.
University scholarships have begun to open up so if you want to choose that pathway it is very important to keep checking university websites.
APPLY, APPLY APPLY!
Many scholarships go “untaken”. You have to be in it to win it and have nothing to lose by applying.
There are also quite a few TAFE scholarships available in different areas. I can’t stress enough the importance of looking on the appropriate websites.
UCAT
Those who have registered for the UCAT can access practice papers either on the UCAT website or other websites such as NIE. Be aware that most of these other websites charge money for the papers and workshops.
If anyone needs assistance with this, please come and see me.
UAC
I would also like to encourage those Year 12 students who are applying for University to register on UAC ($70 before 30 September and $200 after this date) if they have not already done so. Once you have done this you can apply for SRS (Schools Recommendation Scheme). As students of St Clare’s, you automatically get the EAS consideration for being a student at a disadvantaged school and don’t have to apply for this. There are also various other forms of disadvantage, so if you think you qualify for any of these come and see me and we will go through the application process.

Year 10 – Senior Studies
Year 10 students have begun their mentoring and subject selection process and have been given access to their Year 10 Careers OneNote through their Year 10 Careers Team. It is very important that each student look at their strengths, passions and what they like when considering subject choices. Students have been working through a booklet regarding this.
There is also a UAC guide in the Content Library which shows various university courses and their requirements as well as a 10 Step Guide to making choices for Year 11. Information about TAFE and other pathways has also been provided. If any student is unable to access this OneNote, please come and see me.
If any Year 10 student would like to do a “TVET” course throughout 2022 and 2023, they need to come and see me to get an expression of interest form. I have put a booklet in the Team OneNote which outlines the courses available for next year. Students attend TAFE one day a week and school four days a week. This usually occurs on a Friday, however over the past couple of years Electrotechnology has run on a Wednesday.
There is a cost associated with these courses. These courses incur a cost and this depends on the course. The Catholic Schools Office will subsidise these courses, however parents are expected to contribute $300 per unit per year.
Most of the courses are two units per year which means parent contribution is $600 per year.
- Some EVET courses are four units x one year. This means there is a bigger workload over the year and a parent contribution of $1200 for the year.
- Some courses have the option of an HSC Exam, others don’t. This is written on the information sheets available for each course.
- If a student wishes to gain an ATAR, then only two units can be Category B Board Developed. Only one subject can be done in this area (EVET/VET).
- If a student does not wish to gain an ATAR, then more than one Category B (Board Developed) or Board Endorsed subject can be done.
- Work missed at school has to be caught up.
- Compulsory Work Placement means a week out of school (35 hours per year) each year for each two units. If the first year is missed, then the 70 hours have to be made up in the second year. If the course is four units x one Year, then 70 hours of Work Placement is necessary.
- If a student does an EVET course and a VET course that means 70 hours per year Work Placement
- The EOI forms are due back to Mrs McCann (Mrs Avery) by Thursday, 13 August to be considered and a deposit of $300 is due by the end of Term 3.
Work Experience is available for students and provides an insight into various careers. Please come and see me if you are interested in this.
I am happy to meet with anyone who has questions. The students can
write their names in one of the “white spaces” on the timetable on my office door and I can be contacted by phone (6552 3300) or email karen.mccann@mn.catholic.edu.au.

- Describe how you created silk
- Explain what silk was used for in Ancient China
- Assess the future impact of your discovery of silk on Ancient Chinese society

The coaches were able to develop positive relationships with the younger students and they all accepted their responsibilities at an extremely high level. On the final session, Tuesday 15 June, the Year 9 coaches conducted a small presentation and the Year 2 and 3 students were awarded with a special certificate for taking part in the program. A special thank you to Mrs Lisa Bourke and all of the Year 2 and 3 teachers for allowing us to take part in this program.

Year 12 Business Studies students enjoyed an interesting day out at local businesses. Our first business was RSF Commercial Interiors Pty Ltd who specialise in commercial and retail fit outs and joinery manufacturing around Australia. Thanks to Warren Steedman and the staff at RSF who kindly gave up time to talk to us and show us around this very interesting business. The students really enjoyed learning how this business operates and were able to reinvent themselves during the COVID-19 lockdown period when retail was impacted.
Just around the corner from RSF is Willow Joinery who specialise in new and renovated kitchens and also offer customised products for every room in your house. The students were very impressed with the showroom that demonstrates some of the unique products that can be made at Willow Joinery. Whilst some businesses have been impacted by COVID, we learnt that at Willow Joinery their business has never been better as people are staying at home and spending money on their homes instead of travel. Thanks to Tony for his time and enthusiastic talk about Willow Joinery. I think some of the students will be back one day as customers.
Next we venture further to Croker Oars and Darren shares with us his story of his very successful business with Olympic oars manufacturing on the banks of the Manning River on Oxley Island. This business has been impacted by COVID-19 as the transportation of products overseas has been affected by the pandemic. Nevertheless, the business has diversified with a frog light that has proven to be a successful product. As usual the dogs came to our tour and talk and enjoyed many pats from the students. Thanks Darren for your valuable time and business expertise.
Finally, to end a great day of business we had a relaxing afternoon at Green Patch Organic seeds and a certified organic plant nursery that stocks heirloom vegetable seeds, herb seeds, and flower seeds. Neville is passionate about his business and his lifestyle of organic seed raising and gardening. He shared positive business attitudes with the students as he showed them around his farm. This business has had to survive not only the impacts of the pandemic but also drought, fire and flooding over recent years. The business has survived these hardships and continues to be very successful. Thanks Neville for your time and for the opportunity to see a very different business.
Thanks to the Year 12 Business Studies Students for being so attentive to all the business speakers and for being a great group of students to share time with on the day.

Girls Rugby Union
On Wednesday, 16 June, St Clare’s High School took an 18’s girls Rugby Union team to Port Macquarie. The girls in the team had varying degrees of playing experience but were not lacking in enthusiasm at all.

The day began with a group chat about the 4 key values of importance and some safety tips before the day began. Our team then got involved in some training and skills development before playing some experienced competition.
The first game was hard fought, but the girls went down to a very experienced side made up of players from a variety of Port Macquarie and Kempsey High schools. As the day progressed and the girls grew in confidence, their performance improved, and they showed great skill and passion. I was extremely impressed with how the girls represented themselves and the school.
A big thank you to coach, Mr Brad Hart for his efforts and expertise, and the parents who helped transport and cheer on the team. I look forward to contesting the next round in Wauchope, where no doubt the girls will come out stronger again.

18’s Boys Rugby League – Country Cup Regional Finals
Congratulations to our U18’s boys Rugby League team, who travelled up to Port Macquarie to compete in the Country Cup Regional Finals on Thursday, 17 June. The boys played with terrific skill, toughness and sportsmanship throughout both their matches with some excellent and highly entertaining Rugby League played.
The boys played with attacking flare and strong defence throughout the day and came away with an emphatic 50-0 win in their opening semi-final match against Macksville. Some strong individual performances from Darcy Round, Mhalikai Mercy, Blake Miller-Russell and Jaxson Longa opened up the Macksville defence at will to set up some highly entertaining team tries.

The boys advanced to the Regional final of the Country Cup where they encountered local arch nemesis Taree High, who were earlier victorious in their semi-final match against Newman College. The final was an exciting and seesawing contest where the boys displayed great defensive efforts under fatigue and athleticism and skill in attack. With two tries a piece and Taree High leading 12-10 late in the game, a couple of costly errors from St Clare’s and ill-discipline gifted Taree High great field position where they were able to seal the game 22-10 and a place in the Northern State Finals.
Lastly, a big thank you to Mrs Parvin as well as William Hogan and James Wright (who contributed as water runners) for their time and dedication in training, coaching and supporting our team, without their outstanding and tireless efforts events such as this would not be possible.
