Dear Parents & Friends of St Clare’s
Welcome to our first newsletter for Term 3 2021. I hope all in your family are safe, fit and well as we traverse together the challenges that the pandemic continues to place on our lives.
As a school community we share the frustration and disappointment that postponements and cancellations can have on students, parents and staff. As always, our aim is to keep people safe and to ensure that the core business of the school, the learning and teaching of our students, is able to continue, face to face, on a daily basis.

Any staff member or student who is unwell should get tested, be symptom-free and provide a negative COVID result prior to their return to school.
Right - Finlay O'Connell, Year 12 Environment Leader - Speaking at the 'Virtual Assembly'
The St Clare’s Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) Parent Meeting will be held on Wednesday, 4 August at 6:30 pm in the Josephite Centre.
Local suppliers have been invited to attend and display devices that meet the minimal specifications outlined in the St Clare’s BYOD policy.
In addition, an online supplier, Next Technologies, has been invited to attend and outline the benefits of entering into an agreement to purchase a device, with guarantees regarding repairs and battery life. We have included this option for families who would like to take a more flexible approach to the buying and upgrading of devices for parents or students from Years 7 to 12.
The enrolment process for Year 7 is well underway. Staff have completed a significant number of interviews and our enrolment numbers for Year 7 are very healthy. If you have a neighbour or family member who has yet to complete paperwork or make an appointment for an enrolment interview, please encourage them to do so as soon as possible.
A small group of community members met via zoom on Monday evening to discuss the status of the St Clare’s Parents & Friends Association. The Association has served the St Clare’s community well over a long period of time, but over the past two to three years has struggled to find office bearers and hold regular meetings due to a lack of a constituted quorum. Following discussion, the decision was made to “windup” the Parents & Friends Association and adopt the PEG model of parent engagement. Before this process can be completed, the P & F must audit its books, a process that will be completed in the next few weeks. The guidelines for the operation of a Parent Engagement Group can be found on the link below:
My thanks to Cath Garrett-Jones, CSO Officer for Parent Engagement for her chairing of the meeting and to the parents who were able to attend. I also thank the many parents and friends of the school for their excellent service and care for St Clare’s High School over the long history of the Parents & Friends Association, which has left a lasting legacy in the school’s development.
Over the holidays, Monique Singh, daughter of staff member Barbara Singh and St Clare’s student from 1996 – 2001, took her final vows as a member of the Canossian Daughters of Charity Nun. The order, founded in Italy in 1808 by Magdalene of Canossa is present in 32 countries and is dedicated to supporting the poor and marginalised in society. We congratulate and ask God’s blessing for Monique and wish her well as she strives to be the change she would like to see in our world.

Monique & Barbara Singh
St Clare’s staff are working hard to keep the daily activities undertaken at the school as “normal” as possible and revising the COVID guidelines regularly to ensure that the activities we undertake are within Health Department orders. As it is recommended that students wear a mask at school, the school does not have a supply of masks to give to students while they are at school or to allow them to travel home by bus. The circumstances of what we can and cannot do may change, but you can be rest assured that we will continue to offer an excellent learning environment for your sons and daughters that is stimulating, challenging and supportive of the young people in our care.
God bless
Peter Nicholls

“Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, said, ‘There is a small boy here with five barley loaves and two fish; but what is that between so many?'
Jesus said to them, 'Make the people sit down.'
There was plenty of grass there, and as many as five thousand men sat down.
Then Jesus took the loaves, gave thanks and gave them out to all who were sitting ready; he then did the same with the fish, giving out as much as was wanted.
When they had eaten enough he said to the disciples, 'Pick up the pieces left over, so that nothing gets wasted.'
So they picked them up, and filled twelve hampers with scraps left over from the meal of five barley loaves.”
John 6:1-15
Picture a hungry crowd of people like you and me - feeling a bit lost, looking for a leader with a vision for the future, worried about COVID and work and family and everything else. We decide to check-out Jesus because, well, there’s no-one else with much to say that’s worth listening to. (Sounds familiar?).
We’re hungry, physically and spiritually, and hope that maybe Jesus can feed us.
To do that, Jesus uses all that we have: five loaves and two fish.
Jesus uses just what we have and feeds 5000 people. He doesn’t need any more than what we have and there are 12 baskets left over. (In ‘Gospel speak’ 12 means super-abundance, much, much more than anyone needs in their lifetime).
There’s even enough for us to eat.
Have a great week

Year 12 Annual Tinned Soup Drive
Throughout each year of their high school journey, our current Year 12s have established a special project to support the community – this was achieved through the action of collecting tins of soup to be handed over to St Vincent de Paul. Each year, Deacon Vince Ryan is able to use these donations to support families in our local area, and in this act, show the face of Christ to those in need. The generosity of this group and their families have continued this year, and a stock-pile of around 230 tins have been collected. It is a small action, but the outcome is beyond important to those they impact.
As this cohort concludes their journey at St Clare’s, it is heartening to appreciate that they’ve given their community over 1600 meals across their time. The hope is that as they move through their own lives they will continue to show care to those in need and prioritise social justice commitments.

The great news is that the amazing Dr Charlie Teo was able to perform successful brain surgery on little Halle in Sydney last term, and Halle is making wonderful progress. Costs for such lifesaving surgery, however, are both substantial and ongoing. Further kind community donations enable us to launch “Round 2 Raffle for Halle”.

Pope Francis gives us inspiration with his words and as a school community we can sometimes in our busy lives forget that others are less fortunate than us. He said “A little bit of mercy makes the world less cold and more just, and that we need to “Find new ways to spread the word of God to every corner of the world.” Once again St Clare’s is answering the needs of the local community with their involvement with the community kitchen. The students prepared and served very nutritious meals for the homeless and marginalised in our community. The friendly, smiling faces and caring conversations of the students and staff added a ray of sunshine to the peoples’ lives as they collected their meals. The popular question among the clients now is “When are the students coming back?” Well done St Clare’s staff and students, it was a pleasure to work with you.

Careers Corner
Welcome back to Term 3. What a changing world we live in! Hopefully we will not have to go back to online learning.
On Wednesday, 21 July, Men At Work delivered the White Card course here at St Clare’s to several of our students. As part of a current Government initiative, this course has been made available at no cost for those students aged 16 and above this year. The pictures below speak for themselves.

I would like to thank Mr Hobbes for the work he is doing with Year 7 this year. He is running a “Careers” lesson with them each week using a program called “Become Me”.
Current research is showing that the earlier students are exposed to Careers Education the better their choices and post school pathway options will be.
This doesn’t mean that they will be asked what they want to do when they leave school, but rather to focus on their strengths and identify what their likes and dislikes are. It is important to recognise the influences in our lives and how that can affect us.
Year 10 at the moment are participating in a series of sessions aimed at helping them make decisions about their subject choices for next year.
Unfortunately, we have had to cancel the Information Evening for Year 10 students and parents due to COVID restrictions. However, there will be several presentations made available via Compass and the students are being given information during Clare sessions and also during sport time on a Thursday afternoon.
Please remember that I am available to help with this process, be it with the students or with students and parents/guardians. The students can write their names on the timetable on my office door or feel free to contact me on 6552 3300 and make an appointment.
We will be continuing Careers Sessions with Year 11 students on Fridays during the Period 3 session. As the end of Preliminary Studies is near many students have to make decisions about discontinuing some subjects and working more towards a post school pathway. Once again if anyone would like to contact me for assistance please do so.
I have noticed that the students in Year 12 are gradually registering with UAC and several have already applied for SRS (Schools Recommendation Scheme). Students were sent an email regarding dates so please check this. I have also put this information in the Careers OneNote along with a PowerPoint with more information.
Please also remember to check the various university websites for Early Entry opportunities. Much of this information is also available in our Careers Team OneNote.
