Dear Parents, Caregivers and Friends of St Clare’s
I hope your loved ones are safe and well.
Today we celebrated the Feast Day of St Clare: a person who has, for over 500 years, been acknowledged for her faith, moral courage and service to others. My thanks to our Parish Priests Fr Peter Street, Fr Keven Corrigan, Fr Terry Horne and Deacon Vince Ryan for their leadership, Ministry Coordinator Jason Koenig for his work in preparing the celebration, along with Music Teacher Amanda Brooks and the music students who added much depth to our community gathering. Thanks also to Assistant Principal Phil Gibney for his oversight of the event. Lastly, I thank our students for their support and participation in our first whole school mass for a significant period of time.

A little further into the newsletter, you will find reference to St Clare’s Bring Your Own Device purchase scheme. For the second year, we have made arrangements with an online company to allow members of the St Clare’s community to purchase computers that comply with our BYOD minimum standards. Anyone in the school community can buy from the site and it offers a wonderful opportunity for those who do not have the confidence or time to “shop around” for a device to purchase a laptop from a reputable supplier.
The newsletter contains a long list of students who have shown a strong commitment to their studies and have been rewarded for their diligence and sustained effort. I congratulate all award recipients and thank them, their teachers and parents for the support all have given to our young people as they have studied and learnt across the year.
Over the past few days, I have asked a number of students to identify the attributes of a good friend. With a few minor variations, the consensus has been that:
- A good friend is respectful and doesn’t use putdowns in the relationship
- A good friend is trustworthy
- A good friend “has your back”
- A good friend is fun to be around
As identified, the attributes of a good friend reflect the values of St Clare’s Vision & Mission and our commitment to Catholic social teaching, where kindness, respect for life and joy in the gifts that God has given each of us use are nurtured and enjoyed by all in the community.
Thank you to all for your continued support of St Clare’s and the young people in our care.
God Bless

St Clare’s Laptop Purchase Scheme-Option - Portal NOW open!
St Clare’s is a BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) school, where students attending are expected to have a laptop with them each day. This device needs to be charged and fully functional to assist the school in providing the best learning outcomes for your child.
Over a student’s time at St Clare’s, it is expected that a device suited to junior school (Years 7-9) would initially be purchased and then an upgraded device, more suited to a child’s elective choices, would be purchased for senior Years (10-12).
For many parents, purchasing a laptop is a daunting task with the industry full of jargon and quickly changing technologies. To assist parents/guardians, the school provides a list of minimum specifications each year.
The school has entered a partnership with a provider who offers high quality commercial grade devices backed by three-year next Business Day Warranty (including battery) and accidental damage insurance (ADP) covering three (3) claims at no excess over the 3-year contract.
Representatives of the Diocesan IT team and St Clare’s IT Team investigated numerous devices and chose devices to offer which proved the best overall product in terms of cost, serviceability, features, and support. This takes a high degree of anguish away from parents in the purchase of a laptop.
This company offers payment plans and payment schedules to suit families of varying incomes.
The link below will take you to a portal where you can investigate the offers being made for 2023.
The portal will allow for orders over the next few weeks with delivery in the first week of school 2023, allowing the payments to be spread.
Whilst this scheme is not compulsory, the quality and peace of mind this scheme offers has been noted and this has assisted teachers in best servicing your child’s needs.

Australian History Competition 2022
Year 9 and 10 History students from St Clare’s tested their historical skills and knowledge against students from all around Australia in the 2022 Australian History Competition. Congratulations to all our young historians who performed very well in the Competition this year with two high distinctions, three distinctions, one credit and one participation award.
Congratulations to all students who participated in the Competition. It was great to see you all challenge yourselves and succeed in a subject that you are passionate about.

Year 9 Canberra/Snowy Excursion
On 31 July the first post-COVID Snow Trip set off for Canberra with 80 excited students and 8 dedicated staff on board.
After the usual exciting six-hour bus trip, we arrived at Gold Creek for dinner and then headed off to Questacon. Here students got to experience hands-on the many amazing Scientific facts and experiments housed there before heading back to the motel for a well-earned rest.
The next day the group headed to the War Memorial, Museum of Democracy and Parliament House, where they met with the local member David Gillespie before taking part in a tour through the various sections of the building. After a quick tour of the Embassies, it was time to head to Cooma.
Once kitted up, students were ready to tackle the slopes. The day began with a 5:30 am wake up call, a quick brekky and a pep talk from Mr Carney. When the students arrived at Smiggins they were treated to an absolutely cracking day of clear skies and amazing conditions. Much adventure was had and we were all really proud of the positive attitude shown by all as many attempted skiing for the very first time.
Unfortunately, the second day of skiing saw deteriorating conditions. Many choose to head over to Blue Cow on the underground train and enjoy a hot chocolate, chips and gravy at the top of the mountain. Those who stayed endured challenging conditions to persevere with another day on the slopes. Sadly, at around lunchtime we were ordered off the mountain as the blizzard like conditions intensified.
That evening the police gave the instruction to not head up the mountain for the final day of skiing. After some brainstorming from our dedicated staff, we came up with an alternative plan and the final day was spent at the movies in Canberra and shopping.

I would like to congratulate Year 9 for their positive attitude and the flexibility they showed when things did not go according to the schedule. Overall they learned the importance of stepping outside their comfort zone… to find the magic.
Thank you so much to Mr Hanlon, Mr Laurent, Mr Hobbes, Mrs Laurie, Ms Campbell- Ellis, Mrs Huett… and of course the amazing Mr Carney for making this trip happen. I really appreciate the amount of time and commitment associated with this trip.

On Tuesday, 23 August we were fortunate to have artist Josh Wood, a Biripi man and former St Clare's student host a workshop that was enjoyable and informative. Students worked hard to produce colourful paintings conveying the life and personal background of the individual student.

The group enjoyed this two-hour glimpse of a cultural experience.

This week we celebrated Book Week for the first time in a while. This year's Book Week featured the first Australian School Library Day on Wednesday. To celebrate this day and Book Week, the students of St Clare’s participated in the Book Character Dress Up Day. Many students dressed up as characters from their favourite books. At Lunchtime in the Hall those students who wished to, participated in the Character Costume display. There were some great costumes, and the judging was tough. There were three main prize winners taking away a $50 gift card each and a number of runners up prizes of Canteen vouchers.

Thank you to all the students and teachers who participated in the day, and I look forward to doing it all again next year.
Happy reading

Martin Luther King once said “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, what are you doing for others?” The community of St Clare’s participates in many activities within the wider community and one such activity is the involvement of Year 10 students in the Community Kitchen. Students, Amy Rowell, Oliver Mitchell, Phoebe Hinchliffe and Jade Coe along with Mrs Ryan, volunteered at the Community Kitchen last week. They experienced what is involved in serving 67 meals to people in need. As well as preparing and serving meals, they also had an opportunity to give additional food to families in need.
Oliver Mitchell, Amy Rowell, Phoebe Hinchliffe, Jade Coe & Mrs Ryan
Oliver is to be commended on his creative culinary skills and it was pleasing to see Amy, Phoebe and Jade through their pleasant and caring natures, together with their friendly smiles, make the people coming to the kitchen feel at ease. One gentleman said “You have made my day.” Thank you Mrs Ryan and students, I look forward each month to sharing a rewarding experience with the St Clare’s community.

Are you in Years 7 - 10 and passionate about art?
The Canal to Creek Prize is for you!
To celebrate the Transurban Public Art Program, high school students in Years 7 through to 10 are invited to create their own artwork.
The artwork is to be inspired by the 21 signature art pieces that form 'Canal to Creek'. ‘Canal to Creek’ includes 21 commissioned artworks that activate new and existing parklands between St Peters and Beverly Hills and include contemporary sculpture, artist-designed playgrounds, a writers walk, large-scale murals and immersive lighting installations.
The theme for the Canal to Creek Prize is 'Connections'. We want you to consider connections to earth, culture, history, movement and environment. There is over $15,000 in prizes to be won!
- Entries close on 4 November 2022
- Winners will be announced on 30 January 2023
The theme for this year is ‘connections’. You are encouraged to consider connections to earth, culture, history, movement and environment when creating your masterpiece.
So if you are creative and interested in submitting one of your artworks in this prize, either speak to your Visual Arts teacher or see Mrs Huett in the staffroom recess or lunch for further details.

RSL and Schools Remember ANZAC Art Competition for 2023
The RSL and Schools Remember ANZAC Commemoration was first held in 1953, co-hosted by RSL NSW and the Department of Education. Over the years the service has expanded to Catholic Schools NSW and the Association of Independent Schools NSW.
Proceedings, held at the Anzac Memorial Hyde Park in April each year, are delivered entirely by school students including the Master of Ceremonies, keynote address, readings, and musical accompaniment. The Service also includes an Inspection of the Guard by the official party, The Ode, The Last Post, and Rouse.
The service aims to educate primary and secondary school students about Australia’s military history, whilst paying respect to the service and sacrifice of servicemen and women of the Australian Defence Force.
To mark the 70th Anniversary of this service RSL NSW, the Department of Education, Catholic Schools NSW and the Association of Independent Schools NSW are launching an art competition to NSW school students. Two artworks will be selected for the cover of the 2023 service program.
All finalists’ artwork will be displayed at the Anzac Memorial and included in the program.
The Order of Service or program historically has had an image on the front cover on a rotation system. These images have included poppies, Cobbers sculpture at Australian Memorial Park in Fromelles and the ANZACs statue in Gallipoli.
More information including the guidelines, how to submit artwork, judging and FAQs can be collected from Mrs Huett in the Staffroom at recess or lunch.
The competition closes on Friday, 16 September.
