Enrolling for Year 7 2025
Enrolments will be accepted up until 24 May 2024
Dear Parents/Carers, Students and Staff
Term 2
We have had a very busy start to Term 2 with a variety of activities and experiences for our students, including an ANZAC Day ceremony, Parent/Teacher/Student interviews for Years 7 - 10, a Diocesan Cross Country Carnival, a White Card course, Dreaming Talks for Stage 6 Religious Education students, a First Aid course, Year 7 CogAT testing, and a variety of excursions and sporting events. My congratulations go to all students involved in these activities for the way they prepared and approached these events.
Athletics Carnival
Unfortunately, the weather at the beginning of Term 2 forced a second postponement of our school Athletics Carnival for 2024. We are currently working with council to investigate a possible replacement date and will inform students and parents as soon as this is known. Many thanks to the staff, particularly Mr Rowe, for the work that has gone into the planning of this carnival and the last-minute adjustments that have been made due to cancellations.
Parent/Teacher/Student Interviews
A very big thank you to the parents and students who attended our Parent/Teacher/Student interviews this year. The evening held for Year 11 and 12 in Term 1, along with the day/evening last week for Years 7 – 10 were very well attended and gave parents and students a great opportunity to gain feedback on progress and direction for this year.
Year 7 – 10 Examination/Assessment Periods
In the coming weeks all Year 7 – 10 students will undergo a range of examinations/assessments to reflect on their learning during Semester 1. The Year 9 and Year 10 Examination/Assessment period will run from Monday 27 May (Week 5) through to Friday 7 June (Week 7). The Year 7 and Year 8 Examination/Assessment period will run from Monday 3 June (Week 7) through to Friday 14 June (Week 8). Students should be receiving outlines of their tasks very soon and will need to be spending some significant time preparing for these exams/assessments.
God bless and best wishes for the weeks ahead.

Tell Them From Me survey 2024
As part of our focus on school effectiveness, St Clare’s will be participating in an online survey for students – Tell Them From Me® (TTFM®). The survey will provide us with valuable feedback on what our students think about school life, how engaged they are with school and the different ways that teachers interact with them. Schools in Australia and around the world have used the Tell Them From Me survey to help them improve.
The last time St Clare’s engaged in this process was in 2022 and valuable feedback was actioned in a variety of areas across the school.
In the Wellbeing space several resilience and wellbeing programs have been run including work with Delhuntie Youth Care, Voice against Violence, and a partnership with Bamara, implementing the Back on Trak in School’s program, working specifically with our indigenous students and getting them fully engaged post COVID. Jesse, our wellbeing dog has also joined our team.
In the area of Teaching and Learning there have been improvements in student engagement with the use of Learning Intentions, co-constructed Success Criteria and Feedback. Students have responded with enthusiasm and have demonstrated increased involvement, ownership and understanding of their learning.
We would like to invite you to complete the Tell Them From Me (TTFM) Partners in Learning survey. As we value the role of parents and carers within our school community, we would greatly appreciate your feedback. The information you provide will be used to maintain our commitment to working together in partnership to further improve student learning and wellbeing at St Clare’s.
In the next week you will be provided with a link to the survey. Please take the time to complete it…. we really value your contribution.

Leave Notes & Student Messages
It would be appreciated if parents/guardians would phone the office, email or send in a written note if their child needs to leave early for appointments etc. Notes should be handed in at the front office in the morning so a leave note can be issued to students. If parents/guardians need to notify their child of a change of afternoon arrangements, it is necessary to phone the school prior to 2:20 pm (End of Lunch – Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday & Friday) or prior to 2:05 pm (End of Lunch – Thursday Sport) as it is often difficult to locate students if their last lesson is a PE Prac or there has been a room change. Students cannot be collected from the school during school hours by anyone other than a parent or guardian without phone or written permission.
Lateness to school is recorded as a partial absence and must be explained to the school the same way as other forms of absence. Arriving Late for school requires a handwritten note from a parent/carer, email or a phone call from a parent/carer or the absence is recorded as an unexplained partial absence.
Students are reminded that if they are unwell whilst at school they are to advise their teacher who will then send them to the Front Office. If necessary, the office staff will contact a parent while the student waits in the Clinic. Students are not to contact parents on their mobile phones as this leaves teachers and office staff unaware of the situation and is also in breach of the school policy – use of mobile phones.

On Wednesday 15 May our Year 7 students participated in the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT). This test evaluates students' reasoning abilities in three key areas essential for success in school:
- Verbal Battery: Assesses students' ability to reason with words and concepts, crucial for reading comprehension, critical thinking, writing, and verbal learning tasks.
- Quantitative Battery: Measures students' ability to reason with quantitative symbols and concepts, which are vital for problem-solving in mathematics and other disciplines.
- Nonverbal Battery: Evaluates students' ability to reason with geometric shapes and figures, requiring them to implement strategies for solving novel problems.
These batteries provide a comprehensive view of each student's learned reasoning abilities, identifying both strengths and areas for improvement. CogAT aims to support differentiated practice in education by helping teachers adapt instruction to meet the unique needs and abilities of each student.
Our students worked well throughout the day displaying fantastic patience and perseverance in completing the online tasks.

Congratulations to the majority of our Year 7 students as they displayed maturity throughout the day. Your discipline and focus were greatly appreciated.
Special thanks to staff, in particular, Phill Carney, Dan Moscatt, Racheal Minihan, Jeremy Hobbes, Georgina Bell and Bernadette Boere for making it all happen.

At the State da Vinci Decathlon Championships, held on Tuesday 14 May, the Year 7 team competed across 10 disciplines, including Mathematics, English, Science, Code Breaking, Engineering Challenge, Ideation, Creative Producers, Art and Poetry, Cartography, and Legacy. Monday, 6 May, 20 Senior Drama students and their teachers, Ms Mumford and Mrs Johnson left St Clare's at 6:30 am to attend the Maitland-Newcastle Diocese Dramafest. This was a great opportunity funded by the diocese providing students with the opportunity to participate in various workshops. Both Year 11 and 12 Drama students participated in the Physical Theatre workshop which explored ways in which movement can be used to create powerful performances. Later in the day, Year 11 participated in a monologue workshop which focussed on strategies for developing a strong HSC performance. Year 12 participated in a workshop on devising original theatre which is very timely as students are currently working on their group performance for their HSC examination.
Both Ms Mumford and Mrs Johnson were very proud of the students who took the opportunity to travel to Newcastle for these workshops and represented St Clare's High School in an exemplary manner.

Mathematics Workshop and Homework Support takes place on Tuesdays at lunchtime in Room 115. Students have the opportunity to have support for homework or be in a space with a mathematics teacher present to complete more challenging work or preparing for tasks. This is available to all year groups.
Michael Morson
Leader of Learning, Mathematics
Over the last couple of weeks, some of our Year 10, 11 and 12 students have been busy building some new Lego sets that are on display in the library. The first build is a replica of the NASA Mars rover Perseverance and the second build was a light up motorised Lighthouse.

Also on display are the fantastic Japanese Knot Bags made by Mrs Avery’s talented Year 11 Textiles & Design class.
So come along to the Library and have a look at the work produced by our students.
Mr Hobbes
Librarian
Mother Teresa once said “It’s not how much we give, but how much love we put into giving.” The students of St Clare’s, Mohammed Nooruddin, Martina Poropat, Cornell Estibeiro, Amelia Johnson and their teacher Mr Morson certainly brought smiles to the faces of the diners at the kitchen. Their thoughtfulness and kindness were very evident in the way in which they prepared and served a nutritious meal and then with smiles on their faces cleaned up the mountain of dishes that had accumulated. The experience not only gave students experience in the kitchen creating a meal from limited resources but gave them an opportunity to use their Christian values in a practical way. They were all excellent ambassadors for St Clare’s. The school community can be very proud of these students and Mr Morson.

Diocesan Cross Country Report 2024
The weather at this year’s event was great with the dam again nearly at full capacity. Students represented St Clare’s at the Diocesan Cross Country Championships with enthusiasm throughout the day at Lake Glenbawn on Thursday 9 May. Students displayed remarkable effort and a commitment to compete and do their best in their event.
From this event, students who finished in the top 6 qualified for the NSWCCC Cross Country Championship to be held in Sydney on Wednesday 5 June and have already been informed and given the details to register.
Thank you to the parents who made the trip to Lake Glenbawn. Also, thank you to the staff, Mrs Dunn and Mrs McCann, who assisted on the day as officials on checkpoints and accompanied the students on the team bus with an early start to the day.

Careers Corner
Welcome back to Term 2 – we are well and truly into the swing of things!
This week the Year 11 Sports Coaching (on Monday 13 May) and PDHPE (on Tuesday 14 May) students completed their Provide First Aid course with Warren Keegan from Coastal First Aid. This is a very valuable qualification to have. For the Sports Coaching students, this is a compulsory part of the Certificate III in Sports Coaching and for the PDHPE students, it is a part of their course. The students have gained some valuable knowledge and be able to feel confident when assisting in many different First Aid situations as well as satisfying one of the compulsory requirements for the Certificate III in Sports Coaching. Thanks to Warren Keegan from Coastal First Aid for delivering the course. He does an excellent job and has some very interesting videos and examples of injuries and conditions.

Last week the Year 12 VET Construction students completed their 70 hours of compulsory Work Placement. From all reports, the students went very well. Thanks to Mid Coast Connect and the numerous employers for allowing this to happen. This is an excellent opportunity for the students to learn more of the world of work and often results in job opportunities for each of the students.
Last Friday 10 May, Don from Learning Live delivered a White Card course for several students at St Clare’s. This is a compulsory requirement for anyone wanting to work or do Work Experience in the Construction Industry. There were 16 students in attendance, and we would like to thank Don and Learning Live for this.

On Wednesday 8 May we were visited by Jonathon Billingham who is the Dean of Residents at “New College”. This was to present information about New College at UNSW, and other university residential colleges which have an open admissions policy but share a similar Christian ethos and where the consumption of alcohol is not permitted within the student colleges.
New College is a residential college on UNSW campus. They are part of Living At University which represents several residential colleges based at universities across NSW. University colleges are very different to other large-scale accommodation options. Their primary purpose is not to merely provide a convenient place to live, but to foster an immersive community, built on academic excellence, social connection and pastoral care. There is also a link for the Living At University Brochure,
This was open to all students who will be living away from home post school, including Trainees and Apprentices and of course University students. Jonathon grew up in Taree and we would like to thank him for his time and information. Several of the Year 12 students took brochures away with them.

Year 12 students who are interested in a university pathway post school are reminded to check each university’s website for early application and scholarship information. UAC has opened. All students should have received a PIN from UAC – please check your junk mail if you have not received this yet. Please email me if you do not receive a PIN even if you do not want to go to university post school.
UAC Information
Course Preferences
While applications are open, not all courses are available to select within their application. However, they can still submit an application with at least one preference and then come back later to list additional courses when they become available.
Universities have until 1 August to have all 2025 courses available for selection in the application.
Starting an Application: Essential Information
This year, students need the following details to start their UAC application:
Personal email address: For security reasons, when students start their application, they will need to register with a personal email address and a password. They will then be sent an email to validate their details. Once they've done that, they will use their email address and password to log in to their application.
Year 12 student number and UAC PIN: Students were emailed UAC PINs to NSW and ACT students on 3 April using the email addresses NESA and ACT BSSS have on file. If any students didn't receive this email, please call UAC. Also please remember to register a personal email address in your NESA Students Online account.
Students need to enter their Year 12 student number and UAC PIN early in the application. These details identify them as a 2024 Year 12 student, which means they will be able to apply for an early offer through the Schools Recommendation Scheme.
Unique Student Identifier (USI): At the request of institutions, this is now a mandatory field for domestic applicants who are Australian citizens. Students can quickly and easily create their USI or check if they already have one.

If any student is interested in doing Work Experience, please come and collect the necessary paperwork from me. The Catholic Schools Office has set guidelines for Work Experience. Year 9 and Year 10 students have to complete this during school hours; however, Year 11 and Year 12 students can do Work Experience during holiday time or on the weekend.
