Dear Parents/Carers, Students and Staff
On Sunday, 2 June, we celebrated in the Church the Feast of Corpus Christi. Corpus Christi is the feast celebrating the Holy Eucharist and translates into English as the ‘Body and Blood of Christ’. The previous week we celebrated Trinity Sunday as the first Sunday after Pentecost to honour the Holy Trinity – the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. We remember the Father as our Creator, the Son as our Saviour and the Holy Spirit as our Comforter.
I offer the following prayer for families to share to acknowledge the feast of Corpus Christi:
We pray to the Lord, who gives Himself in the Eucharist,
that this sacrament may bring us salvation and peace.
Lord Jesus Christ,
you gave us the Eucharist as a memorial of your suffering and death.
May our worship of this sacrament of your body and blood
help us to experience the salvation you won for us,
along with the peace of the Kingdom
where you live with the Father and the Holy Spirit,
one God, forever and ever.
National Reconciliation Week
National Reconciliation Week (NRW) is celebrated across Australia each year between 27 May and 3 June, which was during Week 5 of this term. The dates commemorate two significant milestones in the reconciliation journey – the anniversaries of the successful 1967 referendum and the High Court Mabo decision.
The National Reconciliation Week theme for 2024, Now More Than Ever, is a reminder to all of us that no matter what, the fight for justice and the rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people will — and must — continue.
St Clare’s Athletics Carnival
After two previous postponements of our Athletics Carnival due to extreme weather, we are planning to run our carnival in Week 10 of this term on Tuesday 2 July. The carnival will be held at the Taree Recreational Grounds Athletics Track and is a compulsory school event for all students. More information concerning the carnival will be sent to parents and students closer to this date.
Year 7 – 10 Examinations/Assessments
The past two weeks have been very busy for our Year 7 – 10 students with a range of examinations and assessments being conducted across multiple subjects. My congratulations go to the students who have prepared themselves well for these tasks and have worked consistently throughout Semester 1. Results from these tasks will help teachers and students identify areas of strength in learning and help to focus and direct future efforts in Semester 2.
Winter Appeal
With Winter now upon us, we are stepping up our efforts to support the Vinnies Winter Appeal in 2024. Many families and individuals in our local community need support during this time and as a Catholic community we are called to offer support and assistance to those in need. At St Clare’s we have organised several fundraising ventures, including BBQ lunch and breakfast opportunities, and are asking for different year groups to consider providing items that will support the Taree Community Kitchen and the Vinnies Winter Appeal. Our first BBQ was highly successful raising $505 and we would like to continue this effort to raise as much as we can for our community.
God bless and best wishes for the fortnight ahead.
Tony McCudden
Principal
Every year at St Clare's we support the disadvantaged in our community through the Vinnies Winter Appeal.
This year we will be providing funds to St Vincent de Paul Taree to assist them in helping members of our community during these challenging times. We will be holding a series of BBQs at school to raise awareness of the work of St Vincent de Paul and raise money. BBQs will be on the following days:
- Friday, 14 June – $3 Bacon/Egg rolls before school
- Friday, 28 June – $2.50 Sausage Sizze at lunch
- Tuesday, 2 July - Athletics Carnival Sausage Sizzle $2
Bring CASH to support community members in need!

Catholic Care Community Kitchen Appeal
As part of our winter appeal, we also want to help the local community kitchen that provides meals to community members in need. The Community Kitchen is in need of some basic items that they can use to serve their community members. Each year group is asked to bring in the following items by Wednesday 3 July.
- Year 7: 650/750 ml plastic containers for frozen meals
- Year 8: Long life milk, coconut cream, coconut milk
- Year 9: Muesli Bars
- Year 10: Pasta, rice, cooking sauces (Leggos, Dominos, Masterfoods)
- Year 11: Beanies, socks, gloves, scarfs
- Year 12: Beanies, socks, gloves, scarf

Recently three of our Senior Leaders (Claire Downie, Aiden Collison and Isabelle Homewood) represented St Clare's at the Catholic Schools Week Liturgy. Catholic Schools Week is a week of celebrating the distinctive qualities of Catholic education and raising awareness of the many opportunities Catholic schools provide through faith-based education.

Claire Downie, Aiden Collison & Isabelle Homewood
The lively liturgy allowed all schools across our Diocese to come together and share in our common purpose of being the hands and feet of Jesus in the world.
The theme for Catholic Schools Week this year is 'Follow Me!', which draws on Jesus' simple yet profound invitation to walk with Him on a journey of discipleship. This theme continues to guide us in our Catholic education throughout 2024 to challenge our staff and students to create a better world for all.
Catholic Schools Week 2024
Catholic Schools Week recognises and celebrates the distinctive qualities of Catholic education. It provides an opportunity for our schools to not only showcase their rich and vibrant Catholic identity, but to affirm their integral role within our local communities, highlighting the multitude of learning and faith experiences that occur every day. |

Over the next two weeks the St Clare’s community will be participating in the Tell Them From Me Survey. This survey provides all members of the St Clare’s community with the opportunity to provide valuable feedback around areas within the school that are working and areas that require further development. The data we obtain then informs future directions we take in a culture of continuous improvement.
Please take the time to complete this survey following the link below by Friday 14 June 2024.
Your feedback is really important to us.

Could parents/carers please ensure that their child has suitable stationery requirements (pens, pencils etc.) for class at all times.
Over a four-week period, during April and May, some of our high potential mathematicians competed in the Australian Mathematics Challenge. This challenge fosters students’ understanding of the power of mathematics and the joy of mathematical problem solving.
The students worked together, and individually, to solve six problems. It has been amazing to observe engaged young individuals as they enhanced their problem-solving skills and challenged their highly developed understanding of working mathematically. It was also wonderful (and entertaining) to witness their tenacity and willingness to question each other about their solutions.
All students had the opportunity to develop their learning and collaboration skills, including differing perspectives and conflict resolution, built new friendships and reinforced their understanding of the beauty of mathematics.

Congratulations to all our participants who have challenged themselves beyond the regular curriculum. We look forward to receiving the results for this challenge.

NSW Presidential Legislative Council - Public Speaking and Student Voice
On 10 April I attended the speaking competition for the Bicentenary of the Legislative Council. I had to create a six-minute speech on the topic “Actions speak louder than words” and competed against 11 other students from Years 10 - 12 from a variety of schools in Port Macquarie and neighbouring regions. It was both enjoyable and humbling seeing how well everyone spoke and I was shocked to find that I was awarded the winner and can progress to the next stage which will be held in NSW Parliament House in Sydney on the 25th. I learnt a lot from other students and the adjudicators (Honourable Ben Franklin MLC and Leslie Williams MP) and will take this newfound knowledge (and excitement!) into the next stage.

Elise Miles
Year 12 Student
On 14 April I was fortunate enough to be given the opportunity to attend the Bicentenary Of The Legislative Councils 200-year celebratory roadshow tour of regional towns in New South Wales.
The council sat for around an hour and a half and gave local youth the chance to express their opinions of the issues that we face today.
Some of the issues that we spoke about were the mental health crisis in Australia as a whole, but particularly Australian youth and men. We spoke about what it means to live in a regional community and how that affects us in terms of the opportunities that are accessible to us. In this discussion the students raised their concerns about the limited study spaces available to us and suggested local libraries stay open during after school time. The issue of digital ID and how it will affect regional communities was a big topic of discussion that I raised and was pleased and surprised to be met with many other youths being equally as concerned as I am. Another big topic of conversation was regional towns and their access to public transport and ways that this issue could be addressed.
I really enjoyed the experience and found it very interesting to hear the views and voices of other young people from our local and extended community. I loved being in an environment with other like-minded people, but also in a space where we felt confident and comfortable to express our opinions and views with healthy rebuttal.

Year 7 Transforms Room 7 into Pop-Up Museum of Ancient Rome and Egypt
On Monday, 6 May, Year 7 students transformed Room 7 into a vibrant pop-up museum featuring displays of Ancient Rome and Egypt. Held during lunchtime, the event attracted students and teachers who were impressed by the detailed replica artifacts.
History 7.4 students, who are studying Ancient Rome, showcased models of iconic structures like the Colosseum, as well as shields and daggers (pugios). History 7.6 students, focusing on Ancient Egypt, displayed a range of artefacts, including models of the Pyramids, canopic jars, cartouches and a recreation of other burial equipment.
The event was a celebration of the students' hard work and creativity. Miss Van Wyk, the Year 7 History teacher, praised the students' dedication and enthusiasm.

University of New England Acquisitive Art Prize
Year 7 student Sansita Edaggotti is amongst a group of 60 finalists in the 2024 University of New England School Acquisitive Art Prize. This is an amazing achievement given there were 553 art entries this year from 46 schools. The selection committee commented that there was wonderful expression of creativity and diverse styles represented which made the selection process very difficult, given the high standard across all entries.
Congratulations to Sansita for her Junior Secondary Entry – Albert Einstein, pencil.

The finalists will be judged by a local artist and the Director of NERAM, Rachael Parsons, will also present a Director's Choice Award. A People’s Choice Award will be voted for over the duration of the exhibition via the online exhibition page and the winner announced at the conclusion.
The opening of the 2024 UNESAP Let’s Hang It! exhibition will be held at 6 pm on Friday 26 July 2024 at the New England Regional Art Museum (NERAM) in Armidale and the exhibition will be on display until Sunday 11 August 2024.
The opening of finalists’ artworks will include the announcement of prize-winners and will be an exciting event for all participants.

Futsal Tournament
On Tuesday, 21 May our U13 and 14/15 boys, as well as the U14 girls played a Futsal tournament at Saxby’s stadium in Taree. Students competed with spirit and represented our school with pride. All three teams walked away with a runner up medal on the day and should be commended on their efforts.

13’s & 15’s Country Cup Rugby League
We are proud to congratulate our 13’s and 15’s boys Rugby League teams for their outstanding performance at the opening round of the Country Cup held at Harry Elliott Oval in Tuncurry on Tuesday, 21 May. The boys showcased remarkable skill, resilience, and sportsmanship throughout their matches, delivering some truly entertaining Rugby League.
13’s Team
The 13’s team faced Wingham High School in their first match. Despite a challenging first half marked by ball handling errors and missed tackles, which allowed Wingham to lead 12-0, St Clare’s made a strong comeback in the second half. They quickly scored two tries, taking a 12-10 lead. However, Wingham secured a late try in the final five minutes, resulting in a 16-12 win over St Clare’s.
In their second match, the 13’s faced a disciplined Gloucester High School. Unfortunately, turnovers and errors in their own half gave Gloucester the opportunity to dominate the scoreboard. Despite this, St Clare’s managed to score a well-deserved team try in the second half, but Gloucester emerged victorious with a 26-6 win.
Back Row: Charlie Crittenden, Degan Myer, Jai Mackie, Sam Walker, Nate Barnett, Adam Russell, Fraser Howard and Jayden Bowie
Front Row: Hayden Whyte-Butler, Sasha Purdy, Hayden Robertson, Finn Gregory, Eli Saville and Liam Rodgers
15’s Team
The St Clare’s 15’s team also opened against Wingham High School, setting a strong foundation early on with well-executed attacking plays that led to two early tries. Their defence and field position control were exceptional, resulting in a commanding 34-0 victory.
In the second round, the 15’s faced Gloucester High School. They continued their dominance from the outset, showcasing strong ball carrying and line running that led to multiple well-structured team tries. Their defensive efforts were equally impressive, keeping Gloucester scoreless and securing a 36-0 victory.
St Clare’s advanced to the final, where they faced their arch-rivals, Great Lakes College. The match was a fiercely contested, end-to-end battle, with both teams displaying strong defence and attacking prowess. Despite a valiant effort from St Clare’s, Great Lakes College edged out a 12-6 win in a high-quality encounter.
Back Row: Maximus Schilt, Ben Wright, Kobi Egan, Oscar Ryan, Koen Paff, Logan Clarke, Noel Saunders, Harry Martin and Damian Gatt
Front Row: Marley Brown, Asher Mathew, Charlie Gibbin, Lachlan Polson, Arlie Atchison, Noah Buckland and Tayte Rutledge
A heartfelt thank you goes out to Mrs Parvin, Sara Harris, Ruby Polson, Hayden Robertson, Rory Clarke, and Kody Zahra for their invaluable contributions as coaches, trainers, and water runners. Their dedication and hard work made these events possible, and we deeply appreciate their support for our teams.

UAC Information
Course preferences
While applications are open, not all courses are available to select within their application. However, they can still submit an application with at least one preference and then come back later to list additional courses when they become available.
Universities have until 1 August to have all 2025 courses available for selection in the application.
Starting an application: Essential Information
This year, students need the following details to start their UAC application:
Personal email address: For security reasons, when students start their application, they will need to register with a personal email address and a password. They will then be sent an email to validate their details. Once they've done that, they will use their email address and password to log in to their application.
Year 12 student number and UAC PIN: NSW and ACT students – We emailed UAC PINs to NSW and ACT students on 3 April using the email addresses NESA and ACT BSSS have on file. If any students didn't receive this email, please ask them to call UAC. Also remind them to register a personal email address in their NESA Students Online account.
Students need to enter their Year 12 student number and UAC PIN early in the application. These details identify them as a 2024 Year 12 student, which means they'll be able to apply for an early offer through the Schools Recommendation Scheme.
Unique Student Identifier (USI): At the request of institutions, this is now a mandatory field for domestic applicants who are Australian citizens. Students can quickly and easily create their USI or check if they already have one.
