Dear Parents & Friends of St Clare’s
Welcome to Term 2! I hope you and your family were able to find some peace and quiet amongst the trauma and chaos caused by our recent floods and that you and your loved ones are fit and well.
Our Professional Development day at the start of term was very successful. Staff worked with facilitator Mark Spencer to highlight the core values that they want to see reflected in our vision and mission statement which underpins relationships in our community. Father Greg Barker gave up his day off to be with us and contributed some significant and thoughtful insights into the conversations that were held throughout the day. We are close to producing a draft document that will be circulated to the school community for further consultation towards the end of term.
Last week Year 12 students attended the Senior Retreat which is held annually at The Francis Retreat Bonny Hills. Feedback from the students and staff about the retreat has been exceptional, with all participants finding much to consider as they took time out to examine their core values, how they nurture respectful relationships and their relationships with God. The sharing between students and staff was deep and caring aided by the attendance of Fathers Greg and George who added their wisdom to the three days. I thank Fr Greg, Fr George, staff and students for their attendance and willingness to share their personal stories of love and hope. A special thank you to Ministry Coordinator Denise Ryan and Year 12 Student Coordinator Tim Masters whose collaboration brought the retreat to life.
Sunday saw St Clare’s very well represented by students and staff at the Taree ANZAC Day celebrations. School Captains Patrick Guthridge and Hannah Van Arendonk led the town gathering in prayer and Vice Captains Lachlan Oliver and Edie Gillis laid a wreath on behalf of the school community.

It was moving to see the young people wearing the medals of family members and letting them tell the story of how the medal came to be part of their family history.

Harley Bunyan, Year 8
My thanks to Marian Parvin and other members of the school executive for their work in organising the students to attend and the many parents and students who transported the young people to the march.

We followed Sunday’s celebrations on Monday with the first whole school assembly for a very long period of time. Our Assembly celebrated ANZAC history, acknowledged the St Clare’s fallen and asked students to consider how they could form right relationships and be of service to those around them. We were proud to welcome RSL Sub-Branch President, Charles Fisher and committee members: Dulcie Balderstone, Allan Pool and Ted Hill from the RSL and Colonel Edward McCann and St Clare’s own Captain Phillip Chalmers to the gathering which was organised by the St Clare’s Year 11 Modern History Class, under the tutorship of Marian Parvin. It was wonderful to be able to gather to acknowledge the commitment and courage our service people have shown over the past 100 years. As usual, our students, your sons and daughters were exemplary in their attitude and behaviour and the organising group showed wonderful maturity and leadership throughout the assembly. Thank you to all involved.
Charles Fisher, Allan Pool & Ted Hill
On Friday, I had the privilege of attending an Aboriginal Cultural Day at Saltwater, organised by Aunty Michelle Case and members of the St Clare’s community. During the day visitors from the Diocesan Office experienced aspects of aboriginal culture and spirituality and learned about the significance of Saltwater to the local Biripi people. My thanks to Aunty Michelle, Sandy & Simon Basile, Laurent Gonfond, Cheryl Kingsford, Alyce Sky and students Kyron Donovan, Luella-Rayne McCormack and Kulan Roberts for their work in supporting the day.
Over the past few months, many of us have been heartened by the gradual movement towards a more usual approach to life as the COVID-19 pandemic has been brought under control in our country. Like the rest of the state, St Clare’s is subject to the process and procedures of the State Government and Catholic Schools NSW. We are excited to be re-engaging with parents and other community members, but also committed to ensuring the health and safety of all in our care. It is a fine balance and I ask that you continue to keep your sons and daughters home, even if they are only a little off colour. Staff continue to administer hand sanitiser and clean to ensure the health of the young people in our care. Thank you for your ongoing support in this matter.
God bless
Peter Nicholls

The Year 12 Senior Retreat was a wonderful experience for all involved. The students gained a positive perspective of working and supporting each other as a group, and were offered great information around relationships, post-school directions and spirituality. The staff who attended were generous in their encouragement and offer of ongoing support for the group. The presence of Fr George from Taree-Wingham Parish and Fr Greg from Forster-Tuncurry Parish was fantastic for us all, and we thank them for their generosity. For myself, it was an opportunity to spend time with an exceptional group of young people, and sharing my story and reflections around their relationship with God was a privilege. The Year 12 students are a very special and spiritual group, and I thank them for their friendship.
The senior retreat was an amazing opportunity for our year group to take a break from our overwhelming amount of schoolwork and get to know each other in a personal and bonding way. There were many games organised my Mrs Ryan and special opportunities to get to know each other that made a world of difference to our 'togetherness'. We can all say that we have made friends with people we thought we already knew everything about and have learnt more about our already strong friendships. There were also many opportunities for the students to decide what we wanted to do, and the things we wanted to focus on. Our whole peer group and the entire leadership team are all extremely grateful for this camp and for Mrs Ryan for organising it. Edie Gillis

Prayer Point – Fifth Sunday of Easter: 2 May
I am a gardener of mixed results and little time, but I do love to get outside and dig in the earth. It’s time to prune so that the plants will flower, especially well in Spring. As I do so I am sometimes reminded about Jesus’ teaching about ‘bearing fruit’ and being a ‘part of the vine’.
“I am the true vine and my Father is the vinedresser…
and every branch that does bear fruit he prunes to make it bear even more.
You are pruned already, by means of the word that I have spoken to you.
As a branch cannot bear fruit all by itself, but must remain part of the vine, neither can you unless you remain in me.
I am the vine, you are the branches.
Anyone who does not remain in me is like a branch that has been
thrown away - he withers;
these branches are collected and thrown on the fire,
and they are burnt.
If you remain in me and my words remain in you,
you may ask what you will and you shall get it.
It is to the glory of my Father that you should bear much fruit,
and then you will be my disciples.'
John 15:1-8
I particularly like ‘you may ask what you will and you shall get it’!!!!
Have a great week,

Staff Attend Reflection Day with Bishop Bill
The Catholic Diocese of Maitland-Newcastle, along with all Dioceses in Australia, is currently undertaking a review of our 21st century Australian Church; a review which will help us, as a diocesan community and nation, to respond to the challenges we face at this time in our history. The review is focusing on identity and community, worship and prayer, formation and education, mission and outreach.
Launched in 2019, and interrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic, the review is using the process of a synod which invites participation by all members of the church. A number of our St Clare’s community have accepted the challenge to become formal members of the process. Along with 50 others, they met with Bishop Bill at Forster this week.

Traditionally, St Clare’s High School has hosted prospective Year 7 students who are currently in Year 6 at an Open Afternoon. Due to COVID restrictions earlier this year, potential attendee totals exceeded the allowed number. The school devised a COVID-safe program to enable small Year 7 2022 School Tour groups to roll through the school at hourly intervals on Monday, 19 April 2021. Since the planning of this program, COVID restrictions have relaxed and an Open Afternoon will now be held at 4 pm on Wednesday, 5 May 2021, but the school decided to continue with the small group concept.

In 2005 my family stood on the pier at Garden Island, with all the other families, and watched as the HMAS Tobruk came into dock. She was returning from Iraq… filled with sailors and troops who had not seen their families for anything up to 12 months. The atmosphere was somewhat surreal. The band was playing, the media was all around with cameras, eager for that perfect shot, the Australian flag flying… an image common to families with members in the military right from that first baptism of fire at Gallipoli… however none of that mattered at that moment. At that moment all we wanted was to see our brother, safely back on Australian soil. We were lucky. Within moments his face was clearly visible on the deck… and all returned to as it should be. 14 years later history was repeating itself and I stood on that same dock watching the HMAS Waramunga returning from a nine-month stint in the gulf… this time I was a mum standing with her daughter as she waited for her partner to appear… same feeling… same relief.
For many Australian families, throughout history, this was not the case. Australian casualties in conflict number over 102,700. All have sacrificed their life for their country. All need to be recognised for their bravery, courage and strength and powerful sense of mateship… characteristics that typify what it is to be an Australian soldier.
Yet those characteristics are not limited to the military. They are ingrained in the very fabric of what it is to be an Australian. They are present in all of us.
Who really knows how they will respond when faced with adversity? Who really knows the true extent of their inner bravery and strength? The St Clare’s community is made up of ordinary everyday people. However, during the course of the past 2 years I have witnessed members of our community who have been placed in extra ordinary situations and done extraordinary things.
Events have seen our community unite together to care for each other… provide support… strength… encouragement… a helping hand… mateship.
Ordinary people faced with extra ordinary situations who respond by doing extra ordinary things.
Hopefully, in the not too distant future, our lives will begin to settle and return to some sort of normalcy… But in saying that, it does not mean that we should not aspire to continue to exhibit those characteristics attributed to ANZACS in our everyday lives.
When you volunteer to help someone less fortunate than you… their spirit lives on.
When you challenge an aspect of society that is unjust… their spirit lives on. When you sit with your mates… in their most difficult times… their spirit lives on…
When you celebrate all that is good in your life… their spirit lives on….
When you face your greatest fears, no matter what they are, and bravely overcome them… their spirit lives on.
So as we take the time to reflect and remember the many who made that ultimate sacrifice and lost their lives in conflicts to protect our country, let us also be grateful and proud of the legacy they have left behind… and continually aspire to be like the ANZACs and be the best people that we can be.

We are back into Term 2 and hopefully have seen the last of disruption to school life for a while, although we are managing very well all things considered.
The Year 12 VET students will be going on Work Placement over the next couple of weeks. The Year 12 Construction class have had this organised and will be going out either from Monday, 26 April to Friday, 30 April or Monday, 3May to Friday, 7 May. Thanks to Mid Coast Connect and the many employers for allowing this to happen. This is an excellent opportunity for the students to learn more of the world of work and often results in job opportunities.
The Year 12 Hospitality class are flying to the Gold Coast and will be working at Sea World from Monday, 3 May until Thursday, 6 May inclusive. Once again, this is an excellent opportunity for the students to learn about, and experience firsthand, the many different aspects of the Hospitality Industry.
Year 12 students who are interested in a university pathway post school are reminded to check each university’s website for early application and scholarship information. UAC has opened and it is great to see some names already in the SRS (School Recommendation Scheme) portal which can assist with early entry.
Each of the students will have received their UAC guide this week. If anyone was away and did not receive their copy, please come and see me.
Job Jump also has a great deal of information with regard to this so don’t forget to check out the chapters in our OneNote or in the Careers section of the school website.
Students in Year 12 who might be considering careers in medicine or dentistry post school need to register for the “UCAT” (University Clinical Aptitude Test ANZ).

Last week the Year 11 PDHPE and Year 11 Sports Coaching students completed their Provide First Aid Course with Warren Keegan from Coastal First Aid. This is a very valuable qualification to have, and the students were wonderful as usual. They will now be able to feel confident when assisting in many different First Aid situations.

Work Experience
One of our Year 12 students, Katelyn Page, was able to complete her Work Experience at Taronga Zoo finally (we are allowed one student per school per year).
Here’s what she had to say:
Taronga Work Experience
From the 29th of March to 1st of April I had the long-awaited opportunity to do work experience in Sydney’s Taronga Zoo. Originally, I was to go March 2020 and then early March 2021, but COVID and floods stopped me both times. Third times a charm and I was able to go late March.
On the first day a group of students, including me, were shown around the zoo and dropped off to our allocated areas. I was allocated to the Australian Mammals. I was in the Retreat, a “magical garden” which is surrounded by a 4.5-star hotel. This day was a lot of hard work and maintenance to make sure the area looked good for the visitors staying in the hotel, it also had wallabies, potoroos, echidnas and geese.
Day two I was with Tasmanian Devils which was a crazy experience to be able to get that close to an endangered species.
Day three I was with the koalas, whilst cleaning their enclosure and putting in new food I could get as close as I wanted as they sit casually in their tree.
Day four, the last day, was possibly my favourite day. I was with the nocturnal animals, bilbies, potoroos, gliders, bettongs and a couple of other cuties. After cleaning and feeding each group of animals I was allowed to sit with the potoroos, who very easily became one of my new favourite animals, they would come up to me with cheeky personalities asking for back scratches and a peanut or two.
Overall, this experience was not only crazy, but also educational and a big thanks to Mrs McCann who made sure I got to have this experience.
Katelyn Page, Year 12
If any student is interested in Work Experience, please come and collect the necessary paperwork from me. The Catholic School Office has set guidelines for Work Experience. Year 9 and Year 10 students have to complete this during school hours, however Year 11 and Year 12 students can do Work Experience during holiday time or on the weekend.

Fast 5’s Gala Day
On Friday, 23 April, Year 11 students represented the school in the Fast 5’s Netball gala day which was held at the Manning Valley Netball Association. St Clare’s High School had two sides compete on the day both showing amazing skills and sportsmanship throughout the competition. Our pink side went through undefeated taking out first place and our blue squad following closely behind in second place.
Well done to all students involved!

Hastings School Futsal Title
On Tuesday, 27 April, the U19’s boys Futsal team travelled to Port Macquarie for the Hastings School Futsal Title. The boys were competitive in all their matches, having a win against Taree High and a draw against Hastings Secondary College. Unfortunately, this was not enough to progress to the semi-finals after a few narrow losses. All matches were played in excellent spirit as these young men did themselves and St Clare’s proud. It was a pleasure to coach them for the day, well done on a fantastic effort!

Safer Driver Course June, July Holidays
The Australian Driver Trainer Association (ADTA) Safer Drivers Course, will be held over the next school holidays.
The ADTA is a non-for-profit organisation that has provided Safer driving practices through this course for more than 50 years.
The course is broken into two modules.
Module 1
An engaging and interesting 3hour workshop specifically designed for 16- to 25-year-old learner drivers. During this part of the course, you will learn how to identify potentially hazardous situations and strategies you can use to reduce or eliminate those risks. Module 1 is conducted by an experienced facilitator who is also a fully qualified driving instructor.
Research shows that drivers aged 17 to 25 years old are most at risk of having a serious accident resulting in personal injury or a fatality. During this course you will learn:
- Why 17-to-25-year-old are more likely to be involved in serious accidents
- What risk factors contribute to those accidents
- How you can identify and manage those risks
- Understand how driver behaviour can increase the risk of a serious accident
- Identify how you can reduce the risks of having a serious accident
Module 2
This is a two-hour in car coaching session that allows you to build on the knowledge you learnt in module 1. Under the guidance of a highly trained driving instructor, you will learn how to apply safe driving strategies in a real-life situation.
Some of the things you will learn in this course include:
- Maintaining a safe following distance
- Crash avoidance spaces
- Gap Selection
- Speed management
- Hazard perception
- Decision making
Please note it is a Roads & Maritime Services condition that this part of the course be conducted with two learner drivers present. We will endeavour to place all learner drivers in their preferred transmission type (Automatic or Manual). However, some manual drivers may be required to take this part of the course in an automatic car, due to student numbers and instructor availability.
Statistics have proven that learner drivers under the age of 25 are at most risk of being involved in a fatal crash, particularly within the first few years of getting their P’s.
The Australian Driver Trainers Association is here to provide you with the skills and knowledge you need to stay safe on the roads.
To be eligible to participate in the Safer Drivers Course you must meet the following criteria:
- Hold a valid NSW drivers licence
- Be under 25 years old
- Have 50 hours of actual driving. This excludes the 3 for 1 hour’s credit you receive when taking a professional driving lesson
Ride the Wave Festival
The inaugural Ride the Wave Festival will take place at Town Beach in Port Macquarie hosted by local Port Macquarie charity Make a Difference PMQ in June.
There are a number of competitions open to students of secondary school age including surf, skate, battle of bands and film & photo.
