Dear Parents & Friends of St Clare’s
I hope all in your family are safe and well and that you have found time to enjoy our beautiful weather.
This week’s newsletter gives a wonderful overview of the many and varied opportunities for learning that St Clare’s offers the young people in our care. The newsletter also celebrates student success and gives a great insight into our staff’s commitment to providing a stimulating and challenging learning environment for your sons and daughters. Extra special congratulations to all St Clare’s students who participated in the Taree Eisteddfod and DioSounds. They performed beautifully and represented the school community with great poise. Thanks to staff members Amanda Brooks and Matt Hanlon for their commitment and support of the students over many extra hours of rehearsal and travel.
St Clare’s recent celebration of World Environment Day is a further sign of the school’s commitment to bearing witness and protecting God’s creation. My thanks to staff member Niko Campbell-Ellis and the St Clare’s Environmental Group for their great work in leading activities on the day. Special mention to staff member Callam Howard for his excellent photos.
God Bless

This year we are collecting new blankets or cash donations which will be used to purchase blankets. We need blankets of all sizes for babies, children and adults. If you can donate a new or recently cleaned second-hand blanket, please bring them to the school by Wednesday, 22 June when we are holding an out of uniform day and selling cakes and soft drink to raise further funds. Students are also encouraged to donate money via their Pastoral Care Class for blankets. Please support this worthy cause as there is such a huge need in the Manning.
Congratulations to Brad Hart, who has been awarded with the Diocesan Emmaus Award - Excellence in First 5 Years of Teaching.
This is a major achievement that recognises excellent teaching and commitment to learning in our school and diocesan community. Brad leads by example and strives to foster the best results in his students, constantly evolving his teaching with new innovative ways to deliver curriculum. He has already had success with his first HSC class in Industrial Technology Timber with one students’ work celebrated in the state-wide Intech Awards for outstanding Major Design Projects. We are so lucky to have Brad at St Clare’s and will continue to support him on his teaching journey.

Australian Mathematics Competition
The Australian Mathematics Competition (AMC) will take place on Thursday, 4 August (Week 3, Term 3). It is an expectation that all students in the top classes of Years 7 to 11 enter, however, we welcome any student who enjoys problem solving or those who would just enjoy a challenge. We encourage all students to ‘give it a go’.
If you are interested, please speak to your Mathematics teacher to get a permission note. This needs to be signed and returned to a member of the Mathematics Faculty before Wednesday, 22 June.
Here is an example of the type of problem that you could expect to solve:
"Consecutive numbers are written on five separate cards, one on each card.
If the sum of the smallest three numbers is 60, what is the sum of the largest three numbers?"
- A) 62 B) 63 C) 64 D) 65 E) 66

The St Clare’s Environmental Group continued to raise awareness about the state of our planet during World Environment Day last week. Year 7 and 8 PC cleaned up the school while other groups of students created a chalk mural with messages of hope and calls to act on climate change. There was also a rock hunt with challenges and new recycling bins placed around the grounds.
Thank you to Ms Campbell-Ellis and St Clare’s Environmental Group for all of their organisation and continuing to promote action for protection of the environment.

7SCI6 have been learning about techniques they can use to separate a mixture. Students were given a mixture of sand, iron and beads, a sieve and a magnet. Students had to choose which separation methods would work best to have the mixture separated into its three components. Students used the magnet to remove the iron from the mixture and the sieve to remove the beads from the mixture. It was great to see students engaged and using their problem solving skills!

On Friday, 3 June our Year 10 HSIE students had a visit from the NAMBUS a mobile Vietnam War Museum. Vietnam Veterans gave talks to the students describing their experience and students were able to view the bus in groups.

Year 10 History students study the unit Australia’s involvement in the Vietnam War. The visit was a great way to understand the Australian soldiers experience of the war and help students understand the nature of the event.
Thank you to all students for representing St Clare’s so well on the day.

Year 10 Chemistry Bootawa Dam Excursion
Our Year 12 Chemistry class visited the Bootawa Dam Water Treatment Plant for a full tour of the plant and lab where most of the drinking water for the entire MidCoast area is treated. The students were given a fantastic tour and explanation of where the water comes from, storage, treatment, and its distribution along with the history and developments in water management in our area. The students were then given a tour of the Bootawa water testing lab and shown some complex chemical techniques used every day to ensure our drinking water is up to the highest standard.
Left to Right – Back Row: Peter Bawden, Thomas Fidock, Bradley Brincat, MidCoast Water Representative & Mr James Collins
Front Row: Mrs Jane Polson, Taj Simpson, Divya Gupta, Charles Pitt & Haley Patel
The day was a fantastic opportunity for students to witness everyday applications of chemical processes using equipment that cannot usually be accessed in a school laboratory. Students are now completing a depth study on the catchment area and treatment process.
The Year 12 Chemistry class would like to thank MidCoast Water for their time and very informative tour. We would also like to thank Mrs Polson for accompanying the class for the day. It was an interesting experience for us all and an insight into all the work that goes in to ensure our drinking water is safe.

Music
What an outstanding term it has been for the music students at St Clare’s. Between student involvement at the Taree District Eisteddfod, DioSounds and the Taree Eisteddfod Grand Concert the music department has had a colossal and jam packed few weeks which has seen some exceptional achievement realised and celebrated for many students.
Taree and District Eisteddfod
Over the past few weeks’ students from St Clare’s have been participating in the Instrumental, Vocal and Rock/Modern/Folk Bands Sections. The students’ efforts were outstanding and they represented the school and their families with great dignity, receiving great acclaim and wonderful adjudication reports.
On Thursday, 26 May our Year 12 music students competed in the Senior Section for the Rock/Modern/Folk Bands. The standard across this section was extremely high. The students competed against a large cohort of musicians from across the region. Their performance was energetic, captivating and showcased the exceptional talent of all the musicians involved. Our senior ensemble convincingly placed 1st in this section and received a remarkable adjudication write up.
This success saw our students invited to perform at the prestigious Eisteddfod Grand Concert on Saturday, 11 June. This is such an outstanding achievement and wonderful opportunity for these students. They are to be commended on how well they all worked together as an ensemble. A big ‘shout-out’ also to Mr Matthew Hanlon for accompanying the students on the bass guitar.

It was such an enjoyable Eisteddfod that celebrated the essence and blessing of music and particularly the opportunity to perform at and attend a live music event in our community.
Congratulations to all the competitors from St Clare’s for their exceptional effort and achievements.
DioSounds 2022
After a much anticipated return, the annual adventure to DioSounds took place on Thursday, 2 June. Our Year 12 and Year 10 Music Classes, Mr Matthew Hanlon and Mrs Amanda Brooks hopped aboard the coach before the sun had risen to destination DioSounds!
Arriving at 8:30 am at the Civic theatre in Newcastle, we went straight on stage for our sound checks. No sooner had we completed these and we were ready for the Matinee Show at 10:30 in front of an enthusiastic audience of fellow performers and primary school students. We were backstage again in the evening for the final concert.

Thanks also goes to Mrs Rebecca Huett for all her assistance in organising our attendance at the event, to our Year 10 Music student who were a great support to our Year 12 performers and also Mr Matthew Hanlon for accompanying the students on the bass guitar. Thank you also to our parents who picked up and dropped off their son/daughter in the small hours of Thursday morning and evening.
Boarding the bus at the Civic Theatre at 8:30 pm we arrived back at St Clare’s at 11 pm. The curtains had closed on our amazing 2022 DioSounds adventure. A day when memories were made and a very welcome return to the DioSounds stage occurred.

Bill Turner Cup - Round 2
The St Clare's Bill Turner soccer team have progressed into the third round of the competition after another hard fought 3-1 win. Once again the girls started slowly and found themselves trailing to an early Gloucester goal. The fight back began with Maya Ljumanovic levelling the scores before Claire Downie scored an excellent solo goal dribbling past three defenders before finishing nicely at the back post. The win was sealed 10 minutes from time with a brilliant goal from Kallee Rutledge. Kallee struck a thundering shot from well outside the box into the top corner of the net after some good midfield play from St Clare's.
Back Row – Left to Right: Marley Brown, Claire Downie, Maya Ljumanovic, Marissa Masterantonio, Ruby Hillyard, Kallee Rutledge, Amelia Johnson, Tessa Rourke, Elise Zammit & Nyoka Syron
Front Row – Sara Harris, Marley Marriott, Ruby Polson, Miley Cox, Charlotte Anderson & Gemma Eady-Muxlow
Another great performance from the team and we now face Taree High in the next round.

Football (The World Game): Bill Turner Cup Round 2 v GLC Forster Match Report
On the day the squad consisted of the following students:
Lucca Boyling, Ashton Dennis, Rohan Dormor, Cornell Estibeiro, William Gibson, Dylan Kinkade, Max Lawson, Sione Masterantonio, Hendrix McDonagh, Riley Paine, Jade Parvin, Cohen Shoesmith, Samuel Stephens, Nash Syron, Mitchell Van Kampen and Kody Zahra.
On Thursday, 2 June the St Clare’s U15 boys Bill Turner football team played against a well drilled GLC Forster team at Forster due to ground closures locally. All students played exceptionally well. Our goalkeeper played superbly at the back. In the first five or so minutes at the start end of each half the team conceded goals. Our midfielders played well given the work that was required of them to keep the ball. The final score was 4-0 to GLC Forster.
A special mention to Claire Downie of Year 9. Claire was the official referee for this match and performed exceptionally well in this position. Great work, Claire.

Manning School Futsal Titles
Congratulations to our 19’s school Futsal team, who recently competed in the Manning School Futsal Titles. Our team played with terrific determination, sportsmanship and skill throughout all their matches, going through the day undefeated!
All players were terrific throughout the day with dominating attacking performances and strong defence across all their pool matches, which resulted in comprehensive 5-2 and 8-2 victories over Taree High 19’s and 16’s respectively. St Clare’s dominance continued with 9-1 and 13-2 victories over Bulahdelah 19’s and 16’s teams with all St Clare’s players contributing with every player’s name being etched onto the goal scorers sheet. St Clare’s saved their best performance of the day for the final against Taree High 19’s, where they displayed outstanding attacking flare which lead to numerous terrific team goals, with the team finishing with a comprehensive and emphatic 6-2 victory. St Clare’s now progress to the regional finals to be held in Coffs Harbour later in the year, congratulations and well done!
Lastly, a big thank you to Mr Laurent Gonfond for his tireless efforts in coaching our school Futsal team, it’s very much appreciated by everyone involved.

13’s, 15’s & 18’s Country Cup Rugby League
Congratulations to our 13’s & 15’s boys Rugby League teams, who travelled to Harry Elliott Oval in Tuncurry to compete in the opening round of the Country Cup on Wednesday, 8 June. The boys played with terrific skill, toughness and sportsmanship throughout all their matches with some excellent and highly entertaining Rugby League played.
St Clare’s 13’s Rugby League Team
In their only match of the day, due to late team withdrawals from other schools, the St Clare’s 13’s side came up against Great Lakes College. The boys laid a strong platform early with some well-structured attacking team plays which saw them cross the line for two early tries. St Clare’s dominated in defence and field position throughout the entire game, displaying great athleticism, skill and flair in attack. St Clare’s ran away with a comprehensive 24-4 victory. St Clare’s now progress to the Country Cup Regional finals to be played in Port Macquarie on 23 June. Well done boys and good luck!
Denver Purdon, Riley Williams, Phil Gibney, Chayse French, Harry Martin, Thomas Watman, Trent Gibney, Ben Wright, Noel Saunders & Tyran Howarth
Domonik Croker, Maximus Schilt, Logan Clarke, Nate Shutes, Ashton Limpic, Charlie Gibbin, Bailey Furze & Noah Buckland
St Clare’s 15’s Rugby League Team
The St Clare’s 15’s came up against a well drilled and physical Taree High team in their opening fixture. In what was a bruising and see sawing encounter, St Clare’s displayed great defensive efforts under fatigue and athleticism and skill in attack, however Taree High came away eventual winners 12-10. St Clare’s second round fixture against Great Lakes College was an exciting and entertaining match. St Clare’s dominated field position and ball possession which led to a couple of well-structured team tries and a well-deserved 16-4 victory. St Clare’s third and final match was against Wingham High School. St Clare’s went down 2 tries early, however they didn’t let this rattle them, coming up with a well-structured team try of their own. However, fatigue and injuries played their role with Wingham running away with the match 20-4.
Back Row: Left to Right – William Lott, Benjamin Scarlett Riley Power, Ryan Box, Zayne Shutes, Kobi Critchley, Austin Murray, Coen Morley, Rory Clarke & Matthew Collier
Front Row: Lachlan Cutajar, Myles O’Neal, Seth Wrigley, Caid Van Wyk, Samuel Schilt, Troy Wright, James Rodgers, Kai De Bono, Daley Jennens & Indy Sheridan
St Clare’s 18’s Rugby League Team
The St Clare’s 18’s side did not play on the day due to lack of team nominations and therefore progress to the regional finals.
Lastly, a big thank you to Mrs Parvin and Mr Gibney for their time and dedication in training, coaching and supporting our team, without their outstanding and tireless efforts events such as this would not be possible. Thanks also to James Wright, Will Hogan, Trent Gibney and Tom Watman who contributed as trainers and water runners.

Careers Corner
The end of Term 2 is fast approaching and there is a great deal of information available on the many different post school pathways. The Year 12 students are hopefully looking at their post school options and are being urged to complete resumes and cover letters as well as applying for as many different courses as possible.
Over the coming weeks I will be attending information days on industry pathways and tertiary education pathways. I am looking forward to passing on this information to the students.
I would like to encourage students and parents to check the relevant Year Group Careers Team OneNote each week for updated information on Apprenticeships, Traineeships, Scholarships and University Open days. The Job Jump section has a wealth of information about all things Careers as well. Please make it a regular weekly occurrence to check the information here.
I will be bombarding students with emails. So PLEASE check your emails carefully so that you don’t miss out on an opportunity if and when it becomes available. I am constantly being made aware of job vacancies in many different areas and email these out to the students as soon as I receive them.
Next term on Thursday, 28 July there will be a “Careers Quip” here in Taree. I am hoping that all of Years 10, 11 and 12 will go to this. There will be many different exhibitors at this event, all with post school employment information. It will be an excellent opportunity to see what is available. Details will be forthcoming in the next few weeks.
Early Entry 2023
Several universities are now open for early entry and several of these universities have their early entry separate from UAC. UNE, Southern Cross and Charles Sturt have various pathways and are worth considering. Please make sure that you have a Plan A, Plan B and Plan C!
There is a PowerPoint with information about this in the Year 12 Careers OneNote with a summary of Early Entry 2023 for Year 12 2022 students.
University/TAFE Scholarships
University scholarships will begin to open up over the coming months and some have already, so if you want to choose that pathway it is very important to keep checking university websites.
APPLY, APPLY APPLY!
Many scholarships go “untaken”. You have to be in it to win it and have nothing to lose by applying.
There are also quite a few TAFE scholarships available in different areas. I can’t stress enough the importance of looking on the appropriate websites.
UCAT
Those who have registered for the UCAT can access practice papers either on the UCAT website or other websites such as NIE. Be aware that most of these other websites charge money for the papers and workshops. If anyone needs assistance with this, please come and see me.
UAC
I would also like to encourage those Year 12 students who are applying for University to register with UAC ($73 before 30 September and $200 after this date). Once you have done this you can apply for SRS (Schools Recommendation Scheme). As students of St Clare’s, you automatically get the EAS consideration for being a student at a disadvantaged school and don’t have to apply for this. There are also various other forms of disadvantage so if you think you qualify for any of these come and see me and we will go through the application process.
Year 11 2023 Subject Selection
Year 10 students will be beginning their subject selection process and have been given access to their Year 10 Careers OneNote through their Year 10 Team. It is very important that each student look at their strengths, passions and what they like when considering subject choices and to this end work through the booklet which they will be given a hard copy of during some of their Period 1 sessions each week. It will also be in the Content Library of the OneNote. Students can copy this into their own section of the OneNote and fill it in or keep using the hard copy. There will also be a UAC guide in the Content Library which shows various university courses and their requirements as well as a link to a “subject compass” to help in making choices for Year 11. Information about TAFE and other pathways will also be provided. If any student is unable to access this OneNote, please come and see me.
The mentoring sessions will begin soon and of course there will be an information evening for the students and parents regarding 2023 and beyond. The date and time will be confirmed in the coming weeks.
Year 11 2023 TVET Course
If any Year 10 student would like to do a “TVET” course throughout 2023 and 2024, they will need to come and see me to get an expression of interest form once I have received these from TAFE. This should happen within the next couple of weeks. Next year TAFE are offering several online TVET subjects and I will be providing more information regarding this in the coming weeks. I will put a booklet in the Team OneNote which outlines the courses available for next year. Students attend TAFE one day a week and school four days a week. This usually occurs on a Friday, however over the past couple of years Electrotechnology has run on a Wednesday.
There is a cost associated with these courses. Most of the courses cost up to $3500 depending on the course. The Catholic Schools Office will subsidise these courses, however parents are expected to contribute $300 per unit per year.
Most of the courses are 2 units per year which means parent contribution is $600 per year.
THINGS TO REMEMBER WHEN THINKING ABOUT TVET/VET:
- Some EVET courses are 4 units x 1 year. This means there is a bigger workload over the year and a parent contribution of $1200 for the year.
- Some courses have the option of an HSC Exam, others don’t. This is written on the information sheets available for each course.
- If a student wishes to gain an ATAR, then only 2 units can be Category B Board Developed. Only one subject can be done in this area (EVET/VET).
- If a student does not wish to gain an ATAR, then more than one Category B (Board Developed) or Board Endorsed subject can be done.
- Work missed at school has to be caught up.
- Compulsory Work Placement means a week out of school (35 hrs per year) each year for each 2 units. If the first year is missed, then the 70 hrs have to be made up in the second year. If the course is 4 units x 1 Year, then 70 hours of Work Placement is necessary.
- If a student does an EVET course and a VET course that means 70 hrs per year Work Placement.
