Dear Parents, Caregivers and Friends of St Clare’s
I hope you and your loved ones are safe, fit and well.
You would be aware of the impact that the COVID-19 pandemic and a shortage of teachers is having on schools across the country. The winter spread of the virus has ensured that the Taree area is not immune from the challenges that student and teacher COVID infections bring to the day to day operations of our school. I am extremely proud of resilience of staff and students and the way in which they have responded to the prevalent changes in the daily timetable. I also thank Admin Coordinator Stacy Posadas and Assistant Principal Phillip Gibney for their collaboration and leadership in their ongoing efforts to navigate St Clare’s through the COVID-19 environment.
HSC trials, which are an important part of the HSC year, continue this week. I am delighted to report that staff are very pleased with the way in which our senior students have responded to the trial exam period, particularly in the areas of personal organisation and exam readiness. It is a busy time of year for our HSC candidates and their teachers, for as well as the trials, a number of major works become due over the next few school days. In the next four weeks we will have visits from examiners to view and grade works from TAS, Music, Visual Arts and Drama.
It was great to welcome a large turnout of students, staff, and parents to the Year 10 Parent Information evening last week. The meeting highlighted the HSC process for parents and students and recommended that students consider carefully, and choose their subjects based on their passion and interest before submitting their preferred course of study to the online process. My thanks to Assistant Principal Learning and Teaching Theresa Avery and the many staff who helped make the evening such a success.
Year 9 returned from their Canberra/Snowy Trip last Friday. They had a great time, and their stories and adventures will stay with them throughout their lives. The organisation of the trip is a major undertaking and I thank Phillip Carney for his extensive work to make the trip happen and for the excellent staff who attended the trip and ensured that the students had a wonderful experience in a happy and safe environment. A Canberra/Snowy Report will be included in the next newsletter.
Over the next few weeks, we will publicise the dates for a series of community events to celebrate the end of 13 years of schooling for the HSC cohort of 2022. I am extremely grateful for the work of St Clare’s Ministry Coordinator Jason Koenig, Year 12 Leader of Wellbeing and Engagement Todd Curtis and St Clare’s support staff and our Parish Priests, for their work with and on behalf of our Year 12 students.
Last Friday St Clare’s had the pleasure of hosting the Tell Me A Story awards ceremony in the Josephite Centre. It was a wonderful event that promoted literacy and engaged parents, students and teachers in a creative process that can only serve to enhance the learning outcomes of the primary school students from across our area.
In closing I would like to thank all members of our school community for their continued resilience and support as we all work together to supply a first-class Catholic education for the young people in our care.
God Bless

Year 11 Business Studies students have been very busy in class learning how to write a business plan for their virtual businesses. They created a fun day for the rest of Year 11 students, Year 10 students and teachers as customers with a variety of services in the hall.
Mia Collis, Isabelle Martin, Georgia Pratten and Josephine Stewart spent a substantial amount of time in collecting pictures of staff members from their youth for the Guess Who business. The customers had to guess who the staff were in the pictures. Guess Who was the most popular business and won the most votes on the day, 96, which was then calculated in their accounting activity after the trade show as goodwill.
Isabelle Martin, Mia Collis, Josephine Stewart & Georgia Pratten
Putt-Putt Bowling, staffed by Morrison Gray, Noah Harris, Brady Lambert, Conor Lawless, Ashton Molloy and Thomas Parsons was also very popular with the customers who enjoyed this business and won chocolates for their participation.
Brady Lambert, Morrison Gray & Conor Lawless
Fortnite 1 v’s 1 with Trent Gibney, Joel Power, Joshua Hughes, Jack Whyte and James Wright had a very niche market with some very keen customers who liked gaming enjoyed this business.
Nerf Sharpshooter was the creation of Harry Miller, Darcy Eady-Muxlow, Ryan Martin and Matthew Spiteri. This business made the most sales on the day as the customers took on the challenge of shooting cup piles.
Harry Miller, Ryan Martin & Matthew Spiteri
Darcy Eady-Muxlow
Bizza’s Passoff was constructed by William Hogan, Macauley Morris and Thomas Watman was very popular with the footy customers who tried their best to get the football and other smaller balls through the holes on a timber frame. This was Mr Gibney’s favourite business.
Carter Van Wyk, Joshua Williams-Malouf & William Hogan
The virtual trade show was very successful and all the businesses and customers had a fun day. Thanks to all the teachers who helped with the day and supported the Year 11 Business Studies students with their businesses.

Mother Teresa once said “Not all of us can do great things. But we can do small things with great love.” These words were put into a practical form by four Year 10 students accompanied by Mr Hobbes at the CatholicCare Community Kitchen. This group of students showed their culinary skills and their ability to converse with the marginalised and needy of our community. The people who attend the kitchen enjoy seeing the students and often will speak freely about their experiences in life. Not only did the students have an enjoyable experience involving teamwork, but also an emotional and spiritual experience with an opportunity to understand the issues of inequality that exist in contemporary society. Thank you Mr Hobbes and Year 10 for your contribution and your donation of Woolworths bags for the clients. As a volunteer of CatholicCare Kitchen and past teacher at St Clare’s it is a satisfying experience to see the youth of the community involved in such a program.

The NRL Road Safety Presentation (Part of 'the knock-on effect' campaign)
The National Rugby League (NRL) and NSW Rugby League visited our Year 10 students on Thursday, 28 July 2022. This was part of the regional road show offering clubs and schools across NSW the opportunity to learn strategies about staying safe on our roads. Former NRL players taking the lead on this initiative were Mark O’Mealey and Matthew Cooper. The students were very attentive and won various prizes throughout the presentation.

Congratulations to Year 8 student Mia Langley who took part in ASPIRE’S 2022 Production, The Cost of Wishes. Mia has been attending rehearsals in Newcastle since February this year and demonstrated her passion and commitment to the Performing Arts. Mia stated about her experience….
“The cost of Wishes” was such an amazing experience, that I was lucky enough to be a part of. The whole process from the first rehearsal in February to our final show was such a learning curve for me. I really had no idea how much went into putting on a production. It was great to see the ensembles come together, I definitely have a newfound respect for all involved, from the design team to the band and all of the Aspire team. And I can’t wait for next year!

We congratulate and thank Mia for her commitment towards the Performing Arts and representing the St Clare’s Community so well. Well Done!

Year 7/8 Girls All Schools Touch - State Finals
Congratulations to our Year 7/8 girls Touch Football team, who braved an extremely cold early morning rise to travel down to Tuggerah on the Central Coast to compete at the All Schools Touch State Finals on Tuesday, 2 August.
Our girls displayed amazing determination, outstanding resilience, and exceptional levels of skill to go through all five of their pool matches undefeated! This was an amazing feat, with only one other school going through the day undefeated, the overall winners and state champions, Hunter Sports High.
Back Row (L-R): Ruby Polson, Marley Brown, Pyper Cross, Lucy Millard & Addison Hogan
Front Row (L-R): Eve Montague, Sara Harris, Marley Marriott, Miller Morrissey & Taylor Brown
In their opening match of the day against Stella Maris College, the girls started slow with a couple of costly ball handling errors, which were further compounded by an extremely wet ball from early morning dew covering the playing fields. These errors saw Stella Maris score an early try to open the scoring and a wakeup call for our girls. St Clare’s tightened up their defence and improved their ball handling, which saw them hit straight back with two quick tries of their own to snatch the lead 2-1. St Clare’s let in a late try to tie the game 2-2 going into the final minutes of the match. St Clare’s put in multiple attacking raids on the Stella Maris try line, however where unable to get through the desperate defensive efforts of the Stella Maris girls, with the match ending in a 2-2 draw.
St Clare’s played Murrumbidgee Regional High School in their second round encounter. Our girls opened the scoring off the back of some strong driving efforts to dominate field position and set up a well-structured team try. This would be the only score for the match, with both teams trading strong attacking sets with impenetrable wall like defence, with our girls coming away with a well-deserved 1-0 victory.
Round three saw St Clare’s come up against a hard running and extremely quick St Joseph’s College Lochinvar. In what was a see-sawing encounter, which saw each team exchange tries throughout the entire match, both teams were unable to be separated at fulltime, with a 3-3 draw the end result. St Clare’s twice came from behind to level the scores, before having their own opportunities to seal the game in the dying minutes, but unfortunately falling agonisingly short on each occasion.
Our girls came up against a fast starting James Sheahan Catholic High School in their round four match, who jumped out to a 2-0 lead. However, our girls didn’t push the panic button and regrouped extremely well to fight their way back with strong defensive efforts and field position to level the score at 2-2 halfway through the match. Fatigue started to set in towards the back end of the game for both teams, which saw defensive lapses and handling errors, which led to Sheahan leading 4-3 late in the game. Our girls didn’t give up and scored a match equalising try as the siren sounded for fulltime with a diving effort in the corner to level the score and draw the match 4-4.
St Clare’s fifth and final group match of the day was against the undefeated and competition heavy weights, Hunter Sports High School. Our girls started strong and shocked Hunter Sports by opening the scoring with a well-crafted team try. Hunter Sports hit back through some enterprising attacking play of their own, which saw them run in two tries to take the lead 2-1. St Clare’s held their own, with some outstanding try line defensive efforts to keep Hunter Sports attacking sets at bay and were deservedly rewarded with a late try of their own to seal a 2-2 draw.
Having finished the group stage second behind Hunter Sports High, St Clare’s sealed their spot in the semi-finals, where they came up against Gilroy Catholic College who finished top of their group in the other pool. St Clare’s dominated field position and ball possession in the opening ten minutes of the match and as such were rewarded with two tries to deservedly lead 2-0. Gilroy persevered with multiple length of the field attacking sets, which led to them fighting their way back into the match with back to back tries in the final five minutes of the match. In what was a chaotic final minute of the match, which saw both teams with golden opportunities to seal the win and book a grand final birth, the match ended in a 2-2 draw. To decide the winner, a ‘drop off’ occurred in extra time where-by one player from each team would leave the field after every minute if neither team had scored. In what was an extremely dramatic, stressful and exciting period of extra time, which saw both teams reduced to three players each who traded end to end sets, Gilroy clinched the winning try with a length of the field diving effort in the corner.
Our St Clare’s girls should be extremely proud of their outstanding efforts, they not only represented the school amazingly but their positive attitude, team work and outstanding sportsmanship across the entire day was a credit to them and deserving of the girls finishing as one of the top four teams in the entire state, well done and congratulations girls.
Lastly, a big thank you to Mrs Parvin, Dru our bus driver along with Sienna Agnew and Charli Morrissey who travelled with the team to referee and support our team on the day, without their outstanding and tireless efforts events such as this would not be possible.

Careers Corner
I hope that everyone is safe and well. There is quite a bit of information in this edition of Careers Corner.
On Thursday, 28 July the Year 10, 11 and 12 students attended the inaugural Career Quip at Fotheringham Park. There were over 70 stalls with information about many different post school pathways.
The feedback I am receiving is that it was excellent and there was a huge amount of information about many and varied post school pathways – quite a few of which are in the local area. One of the criticisms was that there was not enough time for the students.
We will definitely rethink our timings for next year to give the students more time at each of the information booths.
A huge thank you goes to Glen Bowman, Donna Ballard and all those responsible for the organisation of the day.

Year 10 are well into their mentoring program and by all reports the information evening held last week was a great success. Thanks to all those teachers, parents and students who were able to attend.
We offer three VET courses at St Clare’s at the moment, and these are Construction, Hospitality and Sports Coaching. We have been very fortunate especially with Construction to end up with several fulltime apprenticeships after the students have completed their mandatory Work Placement.
Year 12 – keep your heads up and take things one step at a time. There is once again a huge amount of information about post school pathways available and the ability to look at these virtually which is good for us here in regional NSW. There are also many opportunities to attend “Open Days” – this information is emailed to the students and placed in the respective Careers Team OneNote platforms.
Please keep checking your emails for apprenticeship/traineeship information, job vacancies and university information.
If you are thinking about a University pathway, please register with UAC ($73 before the end of September, $200 after this time). Please apply for as many Early Entry pathways as possible – the information is on each University website. When you register on UAC please apply for SRS as well. There are several categories of EAS (Education Advantage Scheme) so you may qualify for one or more of these.
Please do not hesitate to contact me if you would like some assistance.

Tell Me A Story Primary School Story Writing & Illustration Competition
‘Tell Me A Story’ is a primary school story writing and illustration competition conducted in primary schools across the Manning and Great Lakes region. This year saw the 5th running of the event which has grown to the extent that the 2022 annual display and awards presentation afternoon was split with Tuncurry Hall and St Clare’s High School Josephite Centre being hosts.

Jonas Durbin, Krambach Public School – Merit Illustration
Maya Eldred, Old Bar Public School – Highly Commended Year 5-6 Writing
Jacob Hogan, St Joseph’s Primary School, Taree – Commended in Year 5-6 Writing
Tell Me A Story Presentation
In this competition, schools are allocated topics from which a student chooses one and produces a creative writing script. Students from that school are invited to illustrate each story. Entries in both sections are judged by a panel of retired teachers, writers and artists with feedback being given to each writing entry.
From more than 300 entries across two categories (Years 3-4, Years 5-6), those scripts and illustrations which have been judged as the most meritorious are compiled into an anthology of children’s writings and published in a book which students, families and members of the public can purchase.
