Dear Parents, Students and Staff
As we near the end of Term 3 for 2024, I would like to pass on my congratulations and appreciation to our students, staff, and parents for the amazing level of commitment and support that has been shown throughout this term. The term has been focused on continued learning, with a variety of class activities, excursions, incursions, and school events complementing what is being learnt in the classroom. While Term 3 is busy for all students it is an extremely important term for our senior students with Year 12 finishing their formal lessons and learning at school, in preparation for their upcoming Higher School Certificate examinations, and Year 11 finishing their Preliminary Certificate before embarking on their final year of school from Term 4 onwards.
Year 12 Activities
During Week 10 of this term, we will have several activities to farewell our Year 12 students. Wednesday 25 September will be Year 12’s last day of formal lessons. On Thursday 26 September we will begin the day with a Farewell Assembly at 10 am which will be attended by the whole school. Following this assembly Year 12 will spend the afternoon together at Stoney Aqua Park, Telegraph Point. On Friday 27 September Year 12 will celebrate their Graduation Mass together with parents, family and the school community, starting at 10 am. At the conclusion of Mass, parents, students and staff will join for a special morning tea. The final activity for Year 12 will be a Netball challenge between male and female students.
I would like to wish all Year 12 students the very best for their last days of formal education at St Clare’s and hope that the ceremonies and activities organised by the school add to the excitement and the celebrations for these students. I would also like to congratulate and thank the parents of our Year 12 students and the staff of St Clare’s for all that they have done to help our Year 12 students achieve the milestone of completing their formal study for the Higher School Certificate.
Most of the hard work is now left up to the students as they prepare themselves for their HSC examinations which begin on Tuesday 15 October.
End of Term 3
Our final day of classes for students for Term 3 will be Friday 27 September. Classes will run as normal through to the end of Period 6 on this day and we have the expectation that all students are in attendance right through to this time. We hope all students and their families have a very enjoyable and safe holiday break.
Beginning of Term 4
Term 4 begins for all students on Monday 14 October.

Year 7 students have been diligently working in their Religious Studies classes, focusing on writing prayers through the CLARE framework. This framework, which stands for Connect, Learn, Aspire, Respect, and Engage, has provided a structured yet creative approach for students to deepen their spiritual understanding and expression of the Catholic faith. This holistic approach has not only enhanced their understanding of religious studies but also encouraged personal growth and community building. The Year 7 students’ dedication and creativity are truly commendable! We plan to take one prayer from each student and create a prayer booklet that Year 7 can use for the remainder of their schooling life at St Clare's.

St Clare’s BYOD Scheme 2025 - Advice to Parents in EVERY Year Level
St Clare’s is a Bring Yor Own Device School (BYOD). On enrolment the expectation is that ALL students bring a suitable laptop/tablet to school each day to aid in their education. The expectation is that the device meets minimum standards, as advised, and that it is fully charged and functioning.
Having a device to standard, and meeting the requirements (being charged, functioning and ready to go) means that we can provide for your child/children, the best opportunities in their educational journey.
We recognise that parents/carers have a choice in what device to purchase and where they may choose to purchase, but also recognise that technology can be daunting.
To aid parents we have formed a non-commercial relationship (we get no financial benefit - the benefit is to us by having great devices that allow us to educate) with a large Australian company called Learning With Technology (LWT) and through this relationship we have established a purchasing portal only offering devices that would suit a student at St Clare’s.
- The devices carry three-year onsite warranty. (refer attached brochure)
- The devices carry accidental damage protection (refer attached brochure)
- The portal is open all year round.
- LWT offers two-year finance.
The portal can be accessed NOW through the link: https:/sclarehs.orderportal.com.au
The items attached to this newsletter article are to inform you of the:
- School requirements regarding device specifications/minimum standards.
- Models available and their specifications.
- The warranty details and terms.

Year 7-4 Food Technology students have learnt how to do simple egg recipes three ways.
Egg in a cloud consists of a fluffed egg white baked in the oven for several minutes then topped with an egg yolk and baked again.
Pan fried scrambled eggs - done simply with egg, salt and pepper. Topped with chives, cheese and oven baked prosciutto crumble, served with panfried Warrigal greens and French Sorrel.
Microwave simple scrambled eggs with egg, salt and pepper, served with Warrigal greens and French Sorrel.
It was discussed with students that these simple recipes can be extended with many different items. Some ideas are cream, milk, bacon, mushrooms, capsicum and corn to name a few.

Pope Francis said, "When you forget yourself and think of others, this is love!” This week St Clare's staff and students certainly put these words into practice. On Monday four teachers, as part of the staff Spirituality Day, Jessica Bennett, Simon Basile, Rebecca Harris and Courtney Van Kampen engaged with the clients at the Community Kitchen serving 200 nutritious meals to the needy in our community.
Simon Basile, Jessica Bennett, Rebecca Harris & Courtney Van Kampen
On Wednesday the Year 10 students Lily Nicolaou, Mia Tresidder, Luciana Hartley, Sarah Allen and Mrs Ryan prepared, served and cleaned the kitchen which involved copious washing up and it was all done with a smile on their faces. The clients love having the students in the kitchen and their friendly faces and conversation always puts a smile on their faces and makes their day. The students served 190 meals. Well done staff and students. These are examples of putting your faith into action.

7/8 Girls’ Basketball Team
On Thursday 5 September our 7/8 girls’ basketball team travelled to Newcastle to contest the Diocesan Championships. They represented the school with pride and won their first four games, eventually going down to St Pius in the semi-final. Students should be proud of their incredible performances and respectful behaviour. We also thank Charlotte Cooper, Callie Gillard, Angus Moore and Leo Beckton who did an outstanding job as coaches, managers and referees.

7/8 Boys Team
The St Clare's 7/8 Boys Team had an impressive day of basketball, showcasing great skill and sportsmanship throughout a series of challenging matches. The day was marked by close games, strategic plays, and standout performances from key players.
In their first game against St Joseph’s College Lochinvar, St Clare’s led at halftime but ultimately fell short in a tight contest, losing 39-36. Despite the loss, their performance in the first half highlighted their potential.
The team bounced back strongly in their second game against St Mary’s Gateshead, securing a narrow 39-35 victory. The match was closely contested, but St Clare’s resilience and determination led them to success.
Against St Paul’s Booragul, St Clare’s surged ahead with impressive teamwork, leading to a decisive win with a score of 33-17. The team’s cohesive play was evident, and they managed to dominate the game.
In the playoff against St Pius X High School, St Clare’s faced a hard-fought battle. Although the opposition initially took the lead, St Clare’s put up a strong fight, bringing the score level at one point. However, a few minor injuries and relentless pressure from St Pius X High School led to a narrow defeat, with a final score of 34-26.
Throughout the day, Leo Beckton and Triston Brody stood out as the lead game scorers, consistently contributing crucial points. Win Kityanyong and Angus Moore were instrumental as defensive legends, providing exceptional defence and support.
The team exhibited quick hands, precise passes, and excellent teamwork in all their matches. Their cohesive play and strategic approach were evident in both offensive and defensive situations.

Overall, it was a great day of basketball for St Clare’s 7/8 Boys Team. Despite facing tough competition and a few setbacks, the players demonstrated commendable effort and sportsmanship. Well done to everyone for their dedication and hard work throughout the day.

9/10 Boys Basketball

On Thursday 29 August the St Clare's Boys Year 9/10 Basketball team headed down to Broadmeadow Basketball Stadium to compete in the Diocesan Basketball Championships. The team, led by Cade Van Ewyk-Campbell, included Dallas Agnew, Tyler Williams, Harry Martin, Cooper Yates, Cameron Ford, Aiden Miles, Lane Wisemantel-Davis, Mohammed Nooruddin and Archer Murray competed well against various teams from schools throughout the Diocese. The boys made it through the finals of Pool C where they played San Clemente from Mayfield and in a hard-fought final defeated their opponents 34 to 33, with the winning basket thrown in the final seconds of the game.

There is an excellent Australian Apprenticeships Website. The Federal Government has developed a new website to replace the Australian Apprenticeships Pathways site. The new site is Australian Apprenticeships
The industry-based literacy and numeracy quizzes are still accessible in this new site.
It has excellent information and practice aptitude tests to see where you would best fit in industry.
Once again, I am reminding Year 12 students that there are several deadlines approaching especially for students who are considering a university pathway next year.
The cut-off for UAC applications at $78 is 30 September. After this date the cost of registering will rise to $220 so if you are thinking about a university pathway post school and you are in Year 12, please make sure that you have registered before 30 September. Early entry deadlines for many universities are also fast approaching. UNE, Southern Cross, Wollongong and the Sunshine Coast University all offer these programs so please have a look at these. Even if it is not your first choice, it can give you some options if you do not get into the course you want.
Charles Sturt University also have more rounds of their Early Entry pathway as the year progresses. Thanks to those who have let me know that they have received an offer.
I would appreciate any student letting me know when they receive an Early Offer.
It has been very pleasing to have had interviews with many of the Yr 12 students. Please do not hesitate to contact me to arrange a meeting so that we can go through your options.
Several universities are offering One-on-One mentoring sessions (virtually) with students. The Year 12 students would be able to speak to a university student one-on-one and ask any questions they might have about any aspect of university life. Please check on each University website. There are also many Open Days – this is excellent as you can see what university life is like.
Please check out scholarships at the various universities and TAFE. There are several on offer including a regional TAFE scholarship. The Teach Rural and CSO Teaching Scholarship are up for grabs so if you are considering a teaching pathway post school please apply. You have to be in it to win it and have got nothing to lose by applying.
If you are considering a TAFE pathway, get on to the TAFE NSW website and have a look at the many courses they offer from short courses through various Certificates and Diplomas and Bachelor Degrees. You don’t need an ATAR for this pathway.
Year 11
Year 11 students are currently completing their final Preliminary Exams and Tasks. After this time some of them may be able to discontinue a subject. It is very important that if they are considering this, that they talk to their teachers, myself and Mrs Avery.
I would like to remind everyone that Shane Hardcastle from Inspired has provided the Year 11 students with a link to helpful resources in six HSC subject areas. This has been emailed to the students and is included below:
For your Year 11 students, as discussed, we would like to provide additional premium academic support in six Year 11 subjects. Please share this information below with them or the link that is:

Year 10
The Year 10 students have now made their subject selections for 2025 and the process of working out the lines and classes is well under way. Thanks to Mrs Avery and Mr McKee for their work on this.
If a student is interested in completing an SBAT in Years 11 and 12, now is the time to get the paperwork started. Please come and see me if you wish to do this. Please also remember that if you choose this pathway then you are responsible for catching up on any work that you have missed while at work or at TAFE. Once the SBAT/TVET is started then this can count as at least two of your units for Preliminary and HSC work.
Thanks to those Year 10 students who have submitted an EOI for TVET in 2025. They have now been submitted onto the EVET site and we are waiting to see whether or not the courses will run in 2025.
Please remember that there is usually more than one pathway into a preferred career and talk to your teachers and parents about your choices. I am happy to meet with anyone who would like some help with this.
White Card Course
I will be organising another White Card course at the end of the year. In order to complete the White Card course a student has to have turned 14 by the time the course is run. If you are thinking about doing this course, you will also need to have a USI number. This takes about five minutes to complete and has no cost involved.
Work Experience
If anyone would like to do Work Experience, please come and get the paperwork from me. We have had many students doing this over the past nine months and it is an excellent way to introduce yourself to a prospective employer.
I am happy to meet with anyone to discuss anything to do with post school pathways.
