Dear Parents & Friends of St Clare’s
I hope our second newsletter for the term finds you and your loved ones happy, safe and well.
Over the past few weeks, the school executive has made a conscious decision to re-establish some of the practises and procedures that were placed on hold when the COVID-19 pandemic was at its peak. The timetabling of whole school assemblies, parent/teacher/student interviews, face-to-face enrolment interviews and longer term school excursions has allowed parents and teachers to spend time together, re-establish relationships and talk about the young people in their care. The most recent parent/teacher/student interviews had a wonderful atmosphere and were a great expression of the collaborative approach to learning and teaching at the school. My thanks to staff and the hundreds of families who attended; a special mention to St Clare’s support staff who spent many hours organising the venue, interview times and processing personal information following the event.
Parents and carers will have received information regarding a significant change to Maitland Diocesan business software. The new software, called TechnologyOne will be rolled out at St Clare’s 27 May to 2 June. Our support staff will undertake training in the software package over the next few weeks. As with any change to established systems, there are likely to be some unintended glitches and hiccups as the school community adjusts to new processes and procedures. Please be aware that our staff will be doing all they can to ensure a smooth transition to the use of the TechnologyOne package.
Next week is Catholic Schools Week. During the week we will take time to remember and celebrate the development of our Catholic System of schools and acknowledge the wonderful achievements of parents, students and staff who have contributed to the development of our St Clare’s community. As part of the week we will be holding school tours for small groups of people interested in enrolling their sons and daughters into Year 7 at St Clare’s in 2023. Details of the tours can be found at the end of the Principal’s message.
If you are intending to enrol a young person at St Clare’s, please collect an enrolment package from your Catholic Primary school or from the St Clare’s office. Enrolment interviews will commence later in the term.
In the past few days there has been reference in the media about the surge in COVID-19 infections in Australia and the impact this is having on businesses and communities. Like most enterprises, St Clare’s is being affected by the continued spread of the virus. Student and staff absences have impacted on parent/teacher/student interviews, the running of NAPLAN and task completion in all faculties across the school. It is important that if your son or daughter is ill, you keep them home until they are completely well. Please do not send them on an excursion or camp if they are not 100% fit and well – to do so is putting the health and wellbeing of students and staff at risk and will threaten the viability of much anticipated school events.
In closing, I would like to thank parents, students and staff for their commitment to providing a quality education in very difficult times. We know that when all members of the learning team: students, parents and staff work together, great things happen.
God Bless

NEWS FLASH!!!!
After two COVID years out of the Kitchen, four Year 10 students cooked up a ‘storm’… 85 meals on Friday, 13 May.
To see Lachlan Bell, Sienna Agnew, Megan Pieschel and Natalie Payne in action, out of their comfort zone, was the highlight of a big day. The students are to be commended for their polite, respectful, welcoming and generous nature. Their cooking skills have been honed to a razor-sharp edge: peeling apples, frying sausages, chopping vegetables and of course a mountain of washing and wiping up and sweeping the floor as well. I’m sure they all returned home with many stories to share. Their hard work ensured that a number of ‘at risk’ local folk received some companionship and a hot meal. Christianity in action!

DRAMA: At the end of last term, St Clare’s competed in the Diocesan Theatresports Competition at St Pius X Adamstown. This would involve us competing against a number of schools in the Maitland Newcastle Diocese as St. Clare’s entered teams from Year 9. 10 and 11 Drama into the contest. The day involved students using their improvisational skills to develop short performances with no preparation.
Year 9 won the day with the highest point score out of all the teams. This is a phenomenal achievement for a group who had only been performing for 8 weeks. They were consistent with their scores and produced a very entertaining typewriter scene. Year 9 was represented by Gemma Eady-Muxlow, Tom Gordon, Josh McGann and Alex Saville.
Gemma Eady-Muxlow, Alex Saville, Tom Gordon & Josh McGann
Year 10 are not currently studying drama as an elective and thus had to rely on all the skills they had learnt in the previous year. It didn’t take them long however to shake off the rust and start performing with all the physicality and strong character work they had become known for. This group will make an excellent senior drama class and continued their desire to improve throughout the day. Year 10 were represented by Will Maslen, Savannah Murray, Lachlan Bell, Jade Coe, Claire Priddle, Megan Pieschel and Elise Miles.
Elise Miles, Megan Pieschel, Will Maslen, Lachlan Bell, Savannah Murray, Jade Coe & Claire Priddle
Lastly, The Year 11 team was so excited to compete that they had already decided on their team uniform three weeks in advance. Nothing screams enthusiastic theatre kid like a bright and colourful fishing shirt. Our fishermen team were extremely creative with their scenes which were also full of witty jokes and great comic timing. Year 11 have already bonded as a class and their relationships and teamwork grew stronger throughout the competition. Year 11 were represented by Kiara Conway, Brady Lambert, Jai Payne, Sienna Thornton and Karma Van Der Merwe.

I would like to congratulate all students who competed for their exceptional behaviour and commitment on the day. A big thank you to all the parents who assisted with transport. Your assistance is greatly appreciated.

Year 8 PDHPE Healthy Picnic Lunch Assessment
Last week, Year 8 PDHPE completed the practical component of their Healthy Picnic Lunch assessment task. Students were required to work in groups to design a menu and present a lunch that incorporated all five food groups in proportion to Australia’s dietary guidelines.
The class did a fantastic job, presenting menus with various themes and having a delicious lunch together.

Well done Year 8!

PDHPE First Aid Course
On Friday, 6 May, Year 11 PDHPE students completed their Provide First Aid course at school. The day was both enjoyable and informative, allowing students the opportunity to develop their CPR and first aid skills. Many thanks to Warren Keegan at Coastal First Aid for coming in to run the course for us.

Community & Family Studies – Group Activity
During our study of Individuals and Groups, we are looking at roles within groups and group cohesion. To see these things in a practical activity, we had a group challenge of building a spaghetti tower. The aim was to work together and build the highest tower. It was an interesting activity with people adopting differing roles at different points and different levels of group cohesion. Two groups had excellent towers with others seemingly all about the process. Either way, it was a great learning opportunity that students enjoyed.

Visual Arts 10, 11 & 12 Lake Macquarie Museum of Art and Culture & Biennale of Sydney Excursion
Wednesday, 4 May, 50 students, three teachers: Ms Niko Campbell-Ellis, Mr Jason Koenig, Mrs Lyndall Laurie and the most helpful bus driver: Mr Dru Prewett of Newcombes Coaches, began the ‘art experience’ epic day out. First stop was Lake Macquarie Museum of Art and Culture to encounter the First Class 21 exhibition.
This exhibition is a curated selection of the high calibre artworks produced at a wide range of schools. First Class 21 gives young artists the chance to present their artwork within a gallery environment and to a wide audience.
Employing a variety of expressive forms, our Visual Arts HSC cohort have examined concepts encompassing identity, subjectivity, family memory, isolation, ecological responsibilities, fear and nostalgia. Intimate artworks explore complex connection between home, identity, personal relationships, and culture.
Visual Art diaries entries were made, and many group photos were taken!

We forged on towards Sydney before lunch. Our group was lucky to view three venues featuring Biennale of Sydney artists: the brand new Barangaroo Cutaway and Stargazer Lawn followed by the Museum of Contemporary Art.
Since its inception in 1973, the Biennale of Sydney has provided a platform for art and ideas, showcasing the work of nearly 1,900 artists from more than 100 countries. Today it is considered one of the leading international contemporary art events, recognised for commissioning and presenting innovative, thought-provoking art from Australia and the world. This year’s 23rd Biennale of Sydney, titled rīvus, featured working themes of weaving and rivers, which included topics like rights of nature, sustainability, food security, consumption, pollution, biodiversity, extinction and ancestral technologies.
Thank you to our Years 10, 11 & 12 students. We very much enjoyed talking about artwork installations, favourite artists, and themes along the way. Our steps were many: walking under the harbour bridge, sampling gelato at Circular Quay and being immersed in conversations about art and culture.

Bill Turner Cup
The St Clare’s Under 15s Girls team competed in the first round of the 2022 Bill Turner Cup last Monday. The Bill Turner Cup is a State-Wide knock-out soccer competition for girls aged 15 and under in 2022. St Clare’s drew a talented Great Lakes Forster side in the first round. The girls started well with some good attacking plays from Sara Harris, Maya Ljumanovic and Charlotte Anderson. However, it was Forster that took the lead early in the first half after a defensive mix up. The St Clare’s girls dug deep and came out firing in the second half. Great play from Ruby Hillyard on the right wing set up Kallee Rutledge for a great equalising goal. Claire Downie then put in a beautifully struck free-kick from well outside the box to put St Clare’s in front with only minutes remaining. In the final seconds St Clare’s added a third, Kallee Rutledge finishing off a nice attacking move for her second goal of the game. It was a great display of character from the girls who never gave in and fought back to progress to the next round. A highlight for the girls were the defensive efforts of Gemma Eady-Muxlow, Tessa Rourke and Elise Zammit who were excellent on the day. St Clare’s face Gloucester in the next round next Wednesday, 25 May.
Back Row: Elise Zammit, Charlotte Anderson, Claire Downie, Kallee Rutledge, Maya Ljumanovic, Ruby Hillyard, Ruby Polson & Amelia Johnson

Careers Corner
Here we are at the end of another week as the term flies by.
Year 12 should be starting to think about their post school preferences if they have not already done so.
If you are thinking about an apprenticeship or traineeship post school, you need to make sure that you have an up-to-date resume and are aware of the skills you need for any given trade or business.
The Australian Apprenticeship Pathways website has some excellent resources to get you started.
Go to:
Take some time to browse through the information provided. There are many resources to help people initiate many different career options. There are many examples of potential career pathways and Job Pathway charts. This is all designed to assist in the decision making process.
If you would like to consider a university pathway post school, you need to be considering registering with UAC ($73 before the end of September). Every student in Year 12 should have received an email with a UAC pin (please come and see me if you haven’t) and will need their NESA number to get started. Once you have registered and chosen some courses, please register for SRS (Schools Recommendation Scheme) – there is nothing to lose.
You may also be eligible for EAS (Educational Advantage Scheme). St Clare’s students are already automatically in line for adjustment factors due to attendance at an economically disadvantaged school. Please come and see me if you would like some assistance.
Early entry pathways are beginning to open and I will email the information to the students as it comes to hand.
All career information is placed in the relevant Team OneNote for Years 10, 11 and 12.
The Year 12 Hospitality students have attended their compulsory Work Placement at the Sea World HOTEL School at Sea World on the Gold Coast. It is, as always, an excellent opportunity for the students to experience first-hand the many different facets of the Hospitality industry. They have worked in the restaurant, kitchen, back of house, concierge, functions, engineering, room service and food and beverage.
Byron De La Cruz, Leanne Curtis, Astyn Strybis, Rory Russell, Hannah Minett, Billie Dries & Taylor Young
The students, as usual, have been amazing and many thanks go to Mr Laurent Gonfond for his organisation of this Work Placement. It was a pleasure to be with the students.

I have also heard excellent reports from the Year 12 Construction class and their employers regarding their Work Placement a couple of weeks ago. Many thanks go to the employers who have hosted a student for this.

It was wonderful to see this photo of ex-student Lachlan Oliver at his passing out parade in Melbourne recently. Lachlan was a graduate of St Clare’s in 2021. By all accounts he is very happy in his chosen profession in the Navy. We wish him all the best.
Please don’t forget that if any student would like to participate in Work Experience, they can come and see me to get the paperwork and organise a date for this. Year 9 and 10 students can attend during school time, and Year 11 and 12 students have the opportunity to do this during school holidays as well as during school terms.
