Dear Parents/Carers, Students and Staff
The final two weeks of Term 1 have included many extra activities, such as class excursions, sporting events and community activities, that have certainly added to the success and achievements of our school community throughout Term 1. Unfortunately, the wet weather at the end of Week 10 has forced the postponement of two major activities, the St Clare’s Athletics Carnival, and the Year 9 Reflection Day. Our Athletics Carnival will now be held in Week 1 of Term 2, with the Year 9 Reflection Day rescheduled for later in Term 4.
Term 1
As is always the case in schools, Term 1 has been a very busy Term with assessments, exams and class work all occupying much of our students’ time. The commitment that many students have shown to their studies as well as to the extracurricular activities of the school has ensured that Term 1 has also been a very enjoyable and productive term for our students.
Year 12 are busy completing a range of assessment tasks and will soon be in the second half of their HSC courses and will be focussing their efforts on ensuring they learn as much as possible in and out of the classroom to maximise their assessment results and to prepare themselves for their Trial HSC exams in Term 3. Year 11 have made a very positive start to their Preliminary HSC course and are working hard on assessments tasks. For Years 7, 8, 9 and 10, classwork, regular homework and assignments have kept them all occupied and committed to their studies.
Students are reminded that the effort and hard work that they put into their learning will be reflected in the results they receive throughout the term and that the small daily efforts are often the most significant ones.
St Clare’s Athletics Carnival
The rescheduled St Clare’s Athletics carnival for 2024 will now be held at Taree Recreation Ground Athletics Track on Thursday 2 May (Week 1 of Term 2). We will hope and pray for fine weather leading up to the carnival and again on the day. Please note that this is a compulsory event for all students and attendance and engagement with the variety of activities and events is expected from all students.
ANZAC Day March
A special invitation is extended to all students to join St Clare’s in the Taree ANZAC Day March on Thursday 25 April. Students who wish to join our school group are asked to wear full school uniform and to meet on the corner of Albert and Macquarie Streets at 9:30 am for a 10 am start.
Beginning of Term 2
Term 2 begins for all students on Monday 29 April. The term will start with Week A of the timetable.
I wish all our students, their families, and our staff a very relaxing, enjoyable and safe holiday break.

Year 10 HSIE Cattai Wetlands Excursion
Year 10 students braved the beautiful mosquito habitat, Cattai Wetlands on Friday 22 March to complete a Geography fieldwork assessment and site study.
Students were a little apprehensive at first given the number of mosquitos, however they were ready with their repellent on constant standby. Students used their outdoor time to complete their fieldwork booklet and return for lunch at McDonalds on their way back to school.
Thank you to our HSIE teachers Mrs Tilbrook, Miss Van Wyk, Mr Solomon, Mr Miller and Mrs Davidson for your assistance on the day. We also had assistance from MidCoast Council who led a talk about the history and value of the site. Students completed a line drawing at the lookout of the Three Brothers and completed water testing analysis with the help of MidCoast Council, Erin Masters (Environmental Officer and Water Quality Education). Thank you also to our learning support staff Mrs Bartolo and Miss Tran who also kindly assisted our students on the day.

First Class 23 – Museum of Art and Culture Yapang
On Tuesday 2 April, our current St Clare’s HSC Visual Arts students ventured down the highway to Booragul to visit the Museum of Art and Culture Yapang. Upon arrival, students were welcomed to the Gallery and introduced to the First Class 23 Exhibition via a floor talk from Visual Arts and Public Programs Leader, Joanna Davies.
First Class is an annual exhibition held by MAC Yapang. This exhibition honours and showcases the Bodies of Work created by the previous year’s HSC Visual Arts candidates from schools across Newcastle, Lake Macquarie, Central Coast, Hunter and the Mid North Coast.

This year’s exhibition saw works commenting on gender, identity, the fragility of life and the strength of individuality. Students viewed a range of expressive forms including time-based forms, sculpture and textiles and fibre works. A number of the works were interactive and students enjoyed the opportunity to engage with these works on a personal and intimate level.
Visiting MAC Yapang and viewing the First Class 23 exhibition has allowed our Visual Arts students the opportunity to appreciate the work of peers who have completed the same course work they are currently engaging in. It also allowed students to continue building on the themes, subject matter and concepts for their own HSC Bodies of Work.
A big thank you to Mrs Laurie for her wonderful navigational skills and attending the excursion with us. A great day was had by all in attendance!

Hospitality Happenings
Students have again been putting their skills into practise and as part of the St Clare's catering team; Year 10 and 11 students set for the Taree TasteFest 2024, held at the Waterfront Restaurant last Friday, and conducted themselves in a very professional manner.

Once again, the students lead by example and received high praise from organisers of the festival, John Groen and Kim O’Toole from Taree Lions Club, as well as from the customers. The students are to be congratulated on their effort.
The students excelled throughout the day and night as they prepared the venue, all foods and waited on tables for 90 guests. Students worked from 11.30 am until 8.30 pm. They were very professional in the way they carried out their duties.
The dinner showcased local produce donated and also provided at a discount for the evening and the students had to create a menu using oysters, chicken, scotch fillets, and fruits for sweets.

Last Friday indigenous students were treated to another art workshop with Biripi artist Josh Wood. Individual artworks created a means of storytelling using various symbols demonstrated and explained by Josh. Indigenous art plays an important role in preserving cultural identity. Thanks Josh for sharing your knowledge!

Flipping through a magazine these words caught my attention:
- "Helping others might not change the world, but it can change someone's day".
- "A helping hand costs nothing, but it can make a priceless impact on how a person feels about themselves".
Year 10 students, Hayley Ainley, Sara Harris, Marley Marriott and Evie Solomon and Mr Hutchinson certainly made an impact on the needy in our community when they volunteered at the Community Kitchen. They not only prepared, served and did endless washing up but their interaction with the people was amazing. While serving 220 meals they chatted and asked every person how they were and how they could help them. Every client left with a smile on their face. Being made to feel special even for a short time is important. Well done girls you were certainly expressing your Christianity in a practical way led by the amazing example of Mr Hutchinson.

14’s Cochrane Cup Rugby League
Congratulations to our 14’s boys Rugby League team, who showcased exceptional skill and sportsmanship as they competed in the opening round of the Cochrane Cup at McKeachie’s Sportsgorund, Maitland on Thursday, 28 March. The boys displayed outstanding determination and talent, treating spectators to a display of high-quality Rugby League.
In their first match, St Clare’s faced off against Catherine McAuley Catholic College, Medowie. Demonstrating a solid defensive foundation and well-coordinated attacking strategies, the boys swiftly scored two early tries. St Clare’s showcased dominance in both defence and field positioning throughout the game, exhibiting remarkable athleticism, skill, and flair in their offensive manoeuvres. The match culminated in a resounding 38-0 victory for St Clare’s.
In their second and final match, St Clare’s encountered the formidable defending champions, All Saints College, Maitland. The game proved to be a physical and intense battle, with St Clare’s initially thwarting numerous attacking attempts near their try line. However, lapses in discipline, fatigue, and handling errors crept into St Clare’s gameplay, allowing All Saints to capitalise and score three quick tries. Despite regaining composure towards the end and securing a try of their own, St Clare’s ultimately fell short, with All Saints College emerging victorious with an 18-6 win.
We extend our sincere gratitude to Mrs Polson, as well as Hayden Robertson, Taj Warboys, and Charlie Gibbon for their invaluable time and dedication in training, coaching, and supporting our team. Without their tireless efforts, events like this would not be possible.
Back Row (L-R): Mason Kesby, Hamish Anderson, Kobi Egan, Koen Paff, Nicholas Pereira, Noel Saunders, Archie Hanley, Blake Stewart & Bailey Furze
Front Row (L-R): Xavier Wilkes, Finn McNeil, Asher Mathew, Oscar Ryan, Arlie Atchison, Ashton Robertson & Lachlan Polson
Absent: Jacobi Hobden
Futsal Junior Teams (U19 girls, U13 and U16 Boys):
The U16 futsal team had a fairly successful day winning three and losing two over the tournament. Our team played with terrific determination, sportsmanship and skills, coming back from a 5-0 deficit at half time to lose 5-4.
Great result for a team who was quickly put together. Well done and looking forward a better 2025.
16 Boys : Cohen Shoesmith, Max Lawson, Cornell Estibeiro, Huon Buckland, Taylor Baker, Aiden Miles, Jade Parvin and Cameron Ford
Our 19 girls had a mixed day with some great wins, showing strong defence and dominance in attack, mixed with some unlucky losses. It was hard not having a designated Keeper and the ladies did share the job well. A big thank you to Kya Henwood for filling the keeper role in most games. Well done to all of the team. It was a massive accomplishment to make the Finals. It was great to coach this side and see the girls come together as a team.
19 Girls: Elise Zammit, Darcey Oades, Miley Cox, Gemma Eady-Muxlow and Amelia Jonhson
Absent: Kya Henwood
Unfortunately, even in finishing in the top four, with the change of rules this year, they missed out on the final, only the top two teams played the final. The boys had a mixed day with three wins and two losses and one draw, showing strong defence and dominance in attack, mixed with some unlucky losses, both coming in the last minutes of the game, 1-0 and 2-1.
13 Boys: Noah Johson, Nate Lawson, Cooper Wright, Jacob Hogan, Carter Cox, Oliver Schiffmann and Byron Boyling
Congratulations to all for a very strong performance and good results.

Careers Corner
We have made it to the end of Term 1 – where has the time gone?!
I would like to start this edition of Careers Corner with a huge thank you to Mr Laurent and the Year 10 and Year 11 Hospitality students who catered for one of the dinners at the local TasteFest.
The Year 12 VET students will be going on Work Placement next term. The Year 12 Construction class will be out during Week 2. Thanks to Mid Coast Connect and the many employers for allowing this to happen. This is an excellent opportunity for the students to learn more of the world of work and often results in job opportunities for each of the students.
Year 12 students who are interested in a university pathway post school are reminded to check each university’s website for early application and scholarship information. UAC has opened. All students should have received a PIN from UAC – please check your junk mail if you have not received this yet. Please email me if you do not receive a PIN even if you do not want to go to university post school.
UAC PIN and APPLYING
Students must use their Year 12 student number (NESA Number) and UAC PIN to apply so that they can be identified as a Year 12 student. If students don’t use their student number when applying, they will not appear on the school’s data spreadsheet available on “School Hub”.
Each student can put down five preferences. It is worth noting that not all university courses are available at this stage and more will become available as the year progresses.
If the students do NOT get an email, they need to contact UAC in one of the following ways.
UAC Contact Numbers
Livechat and email through our website also continue to be available.
From a landline: 1300 275 822
From a mobile: 02 97520200
If they are still having difficulty, then please contact me preferably via email so that I can assist. I will be checking my emails at various times during the holidays.
It is imperative that ALL STUDENTS have access to their NESA information and records. This is where they can access their HSC timetables etc.
All Year 12 students have been emailed with relevant information regarding UAC. The information has also been placed in the Careers OneNote.
The latest information available regarding SRS, EAS and Equity Scholarships is and will be posted on the UAC site
Please note that other states do not have their applications open yet (QTAC, VTAC, SATAC) and will open at various stages over the coming months.
- Undergraduate applications open for domestic students on Wednesday 3 April 2024. UAC PINs will be emailed to NSW HSC and ACT Senior Secondary Certificate students on the same day.
- Undergraduate applications open for international students on Wednesday 17 April 2024.
- This year’s UAC Gude will not be delivered to schools but will be available on the UAC site.
- Resources on the UAC website will be updated in April.
There is a great deal of information in this booklet which can be accessed from the UAC site
Job Jump also has a great deal of information regarding this, so don’t forget to check out the chapters in our Careers Team OneNote.
Next term we will continue to have Industry visits on various Friday mornings, and I would like to thank Jess Loughland, for coming to chat with the current Year 12 students last Friday. Jess is a St Clare’s Alumni and is currently working as a research scientist. She shared her pathway and what a day in her life looks like. It was very interesting to hear about how she reached this stage in her life and career.
Thanks again to Erin Lute (from RIEP) who is arranging these visits for our students.
Students in Year 12 who might be considering careers in medicine or dentistry post school need to register for the “UCAT” (University Clinical Aptitude Test ANZ).
