Dear Parents, Students and Staff
Advent is coming
This coming Sunday, 24 November, we celebrate the Solemnity of Christ the King. The Feast of Christ the King is, as Catholic feasts go, a relatively recent one. It was established by Pope Pius XI in 1925, to remind Catholics (and the world generally) that Jesus Christ is Lord of the Universe, both as God and as Man. This feast also draws to a close the Church year. The following Sunday, 1 December is the first Sunday of Advent and the beginning of a new liturgical year. As such it invites us to new beginnings, to revitalisation and renewal in our faith and in our spiritual life. It is a time of preparation for the birth of Jesus at Christmas.
Year 12 Graduation Presentation and Dinner
In a little under a month’s time the final results for the 2024 HSC will be revealed. The Year 12 cohort of 2024 have been a wonderful group of students and the celebration at their Graduation Presentation and Dinner last Friday night was a truly fitting way to farewell these students. We wish them well for their future and thank them for their many contributions to our school over the past six years.

Kooper Hunt has served St Clare’s High School as the Science Laboratory Assistant for three years following his appointment at the commencement of the 2022 academic year. We have been unbelievably fortunate to have had Kooper.
As a Science Department, we express our heartfelt thanks for the calm, professional manner Kooper brought to our team. He was a wonderful fit and invaluable for our faculty. We are so very grateful for his humour, help with our resources, and we will all miss him terribly.
Tony McCudden, James Collins, Matthew Hanlon, Kooper Hunt, Erin Lawler, Paul Smyth & Sheena O'Doherty
Kooper has recently completed a university doctorate in genetics and, as a result, his knowledge of Science has been exceptional. His quiet efficiency, his preparedness to assist during practical work, and his personal love of learning have benefitted both students and teachers, especially seniors and new Science staff.
It has been a pleasure working with Kooper due to his work ethic and technical skills. He has an exceptional ability to quickly learn, a strong aptitude for teamwork, and exhibits rigorous attention to safety protocols.
We wish Kooper well in his future as he moves to interim work with his extended family’s wholesale nursery enterprise while seeking employment in genetic research.
Although we are sad to see him go, we are also excited to see what the future holds for Kooper with his PhD now in hand.

On Friday 8 November 2024, 115 students from schools all around the district took part in the St Clare’s Year 7 Orientation day. Students were introduced to staff and became more familiar with the layout of the school and our expectations. Throughout the day, students were led by senior students and participated in a variety of activity lessons. These lessons included Drama with Mrs Pearse, PDHPE with Mr Curtis, Art with Mrs Laurie, Science with Mr Collins, Food Technology with Mr Laurent and Timber with Mr Hutchison.
At lunch students were provided with a sausage sizzle, access to the canteen and many were playing basketball with the older students. All students engaged well and appeared to enjoy themselves thoroughly.
I was impressed by the attitude and participation of students on the day and can’t wait to see you all next year.

During Week 6 our Virtual Academy students, Tristan Ma, Beau Vaughan, Michael Bonanno and Jaylah Koenig, attended NUSPACE in Newcastle to present their contribution to the Virtual Academy Showcase.

Michael Bonanno, Beau Vaughan, Tristan Ma & Jaylah Koenig
These students have been working tirelessly to complete their presentations and have utilised their peers and staff members to provide feedback on their efforts.
Tristan and Michael have based their research and presentations on the different types of leadership while Beau has focussed on poverty.
Jaylah’s performance is based on her study of imagination.

We are extremely proud of Tristan, Michael, Beau and Jaylah for their commitment to learning and their aspirations to be the best they can be!
Congratulations to all four students on the completion of their Virtual Academy learning for 2024.

RACI International Chemistry Quiz
41 students from Years 10 and 11 recently took part in the Royal Australian Chemical Institute International Chemistry Quiz. Thousands of students from 21 different countries participate in this annual quiz which gave our students the opportunity to compare themselves to the best and brightest Chemistry students around the world.
The ICQ stands out as a unique chemistry education initiative, providing a dynamic and focused exploration of chemistry for school students between Years 7 - 12. It aims to kindle interest in chemistry and underscore the crucial role of chemists in society. It serves as an opportunity for teachers to gauge their students' understanding of chemistry and acts as a platform to encourage students to pursue studies and careers in chemistry. Going beyond standard syllabus content, the Quiz is designed to be engaging and thought-provoking. With questions that encourage students to apply their knowledge to real-world scenarios, ICQ is truly an international competition, attracting participants from Australia and across the world. Last Wednesday, 13 November and this Thursday, 21 November our Years 9, 10 and 11 high potential English students were given the opportunity to enhance their creative writing skills by participating in a Writer’s Workshop.
This workshop was delivered by award winning author, and St Clare’s teacher, Kaneana May.
Students were privileged to learn and practice utilising different techniques of creative writing incorporating the ‘accordion method’ and the inclusion of colour to enhance sentences when describing scenes which makes them more interesting.

Congratulations to all our participants on their positive engagement in this workshop. Special thanks to Ms May for sharing her expertise in creative writing.

Our Stage 5 (Year 9 and Year 10) and Stage 6 (Year 11) Visual Art students had an incredible opportunity to expand their knowledge through a full-day immersive excursion. This experience was essential for meeting course requirements in art criticism and art history. Students diligently made entries in their Visual Art diaries and captured many mandatory group photos!
Venue 1: The Multi-Arts Pavilion, Speers Point Park, Lake Macquarie
Students participated in the immersive Maitland-Newcastle Catholic School WOW arts showcase. It was lovely to see the works submitted from our own St Clare’s students.
Venue 2: The Art Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney
Rene Magritte Retrospective: Students were captivated by the first major retrospective of the internationally celebrated surrealist, Rene Magritte. They viewed iconic pieces such as The False Mirror (1929) and The Listening Room (1952), exploring themes of surrealism, memory, subjectivity, fear, and identity. Naala Badu (North Building): Students enjoyed the immersive sensory spice room and viewed Ernest Neto’s Just Like Drops in Time (2002). Naala Nura (South Building): Students explored the latest gallery-commissioned sculptures and artworks. Grand Courts: Year 9 students experienced the awe of seeing an original Impressionist painting, Claude Monet’s Belle-Île (1887) and our very own Australian Impressionist John Russell.

A heartfelt thank you to our dedicated teacher team: Ms Niko Cambell-Ellis, Mr Jason Koening, and Mrs Lyndall Laurie, for making this enriching experience possible.

Stage 5 Year 9 Visual Arts - Ceramic Lighthouses
Creating art is often a deeply personal experience, and in our fast-paced digital world, it can help students reconnect and slow down. Recently, Year 9 students were tasked with designing architectural features of a lighthouse. Working with natural clay forms proved to be a very satisfying material for them, resulting in some fantastic, finished artworks.

Apology and Correction: Dance Program at St Clare’s High School
In our previous newsletter, I mistakenly stated that Amarli Harrison was the first Dance student at St Clare’s High School. Having only been a member of the St Clare’s community since 2015 I was not aware that Dance had been studied by students prior to last year. I apologise for my oversight.
I would like to acknowledge and celebrate the achievements of all our past and present Dance students who have contributed to the rich history of our school’s Dance program.
In 2001, St Clare’s student Monique Singh, daughter of Barbara Singh, who worked at St Clare’s in the Library followed by Finance for 26 years, achieved a Band 6 in her Dance course and was successful in having her work nominated for OnSTAGE. Monique had the privilege of performing her Dance at the Sydney Opera House!
Following her HSC, Monique was accepted at Tanya Pearson's Academy of Dance at St Leonards for two years which was followed by a Creative Arts Major in Dance at the Queensland University of Technology in Brisbane, where she graduated with First Class Honours.
Since graduating, Monique has joined the Canossian Daughters of Charity and is Assistant Principal at Xavier College on the Tiwi Islands.

After Monique, we had Joanna Drake complete her HSC in Dance in 2010, Therese Cushway in 2016 and Sophie Johnston in 2020.
The dedication and passion that these students have shown for studying HSC Dance has paved the way for future generations, and we are incredibly proud of each and every student who has the ability and drive to study Dance for their HSC as the professional field of Dance can be extremely competitive.

On Wednesday, 30 October, the Environmental group, led by Ms Campbell-Ellis, and Tiana Macinnis set off on a fun and educational day to the Port Macquarie Koala Hospital to see how our sponsorship of Trevor the koala is supporting their organisation.
One of the guides who works at the facility, gave us a deeper insight into why their work is so important. Throughout the day we learned more about two of the main programs they have running. One of these is the koala breeding program, which aims to keep healthy populations strong by focusing on genetic diversity. Their selection of mating partners is very strict, due to risk of disease. Ensuring only the best chance for future koala populations. Another program they have running is their release program, which is designed to rehabilitate sick or injured koalas and return them back to their colony.

Back Row Left to Right: Shiloh Herzberg Nicholls, Bonnie McMaster, Kloe Scott, Tiana Macinnis & Shae-Lee Lacey
Front Row Left to Right: Hayley Ainley & Evie Solomon
However, due to permanent injuries or health issues, like blindness or neurological problems, some of these koalas cannot be released back into the wild. These koalas are now “permanent residents”, who we were able to see and take pictures of during the day! The hospital makes sure these enduring members are very happy in their enclosures, with fresh leaves, morning and night, and consistent health check-ups. These encounters gave us a new appreciation for the level of care needed to ensure these koalas are all well looked after.
The visit was much more than an educational experience. It demonstrated to us why our support is essential. Seeing how much an impact disease, habitat loss and bushfires have on a much-loved Australian icon made it clear every bit of help, including our sponsorship, plays a big role in protecting the future of koalas.
Shae-Lee Lacey
Year 11
One of our high potential Year 9 students, Shiloh Herzberg Nicholls, is a passionate and proactive member of the Manning Valley community. Shiloh is also a well-respected member of our Environmental group here at St Clare’s High School.
Her passion for the care of our local environment was her driving force to starting the Forest Heart Coastcare group based at Red Head. Her friends and their families have been planting every month for over three years and had an estimated 1000 plants in the ground. These plants were becoming well established and a wonderful extension to the existing littoral rainforest and koala habitat in the Red Head area.
Devastatingly, vandalism has destroyed every one of these plants!
Thankfully, Forest Heart is resilient and won’t let this unacceptable action stop them. They are planning a big open day on site on Sunday, 1 December to rally community support to start the process of replanting.
Let’s support Shiloh and her Forest Heart group in their positive actions to create a wonderful environment that will benefit the native wildlife and us - now and in the future.
At St Clare’s we continue the work of St Clare and Francis of Assisi who were environmentalists that saw the importance of every tree in our world. If you have any time on Sunday 1 December, head along to Red Head Reserve!
Congratulations on your effort, Shiloh! The St Clare’s High School community is extremely proud of you.

I saw this in a magazine and thought how true this statement is: “Helping one person may not change the world, but it could change the world for one person.” This was reflected in the actions of the Year 11 students who volunteered at the Community Kitchen. Liviah-Rose King, Jessica Foley, Charlotte Mackie and Island Rosamond together with Mr Koenig created 188 nutritious meals for those in need in our community. As well the way the students interacted with the diners was amazing. Every person left the kitchen with a hot meal and a bag of goodies and a smile on their face because these students showed them, they were important and cared for. Thank you, St Clare’s for being part of the volunteer program at the kitchen and for giving students the opportunity to work out of their comfort zone.

Girls League Tag
St Clare's High School recently travelled to Port Macquarie for an intense and thrilling Girls League Tag competition under challenging hot and humid conditions. The day saw fierce competition, sportsmanship, and impressive performances from both the 14's and 16's teams.
14’s Team
The St Clare's 14's team opened the competition with a tough match against Hastings Secondary College. Despite their best efforts, the girls faced an early setback, losing 9-4. However, they showed promise and determination, learning from their first game and putting up a stronger defence in their following matches.
In their second game, St Clare's took on the formidable MacKillop team. The game was a defensive standoff, with both teams fighting hard to keep each other scoreless. The St Clare's defence was especially strong, holding off MacKillop in a 0-0 draw, a notable feat given their opponent's reputation.
The third match saw St Clare's go up against Camden Haven High School. Once again, it was a tightly contested game with neither side able to break through the defences. The 0-0 result reflected the tenacity and endurance of both teams, as St Clare's kept their focus under pressure.
In their final game, the 14's team rallied with an outstanding offensive effort against Wingham High School, securing a commanding 17-0 victory. This decisive win was a fantastic close to the day, showcasing the team’s growth, adaptability, and improved cohesion throughout the competition.
Back Row (L-R): Jarrah Ingram, Eva Sansom, Zarlie McDermott, Lanae Rutledge, Ellara Collins, Jessica Richardson, Amelia Simmons Vatalis, Beth Harris, Stella O’Connor & Anayah Wetere-Smith
Front Row (L-R): Zoe Baker, Jess Uwland, Jayda Theophanous, Ruby Marriott, Jakayla Minns & Milla Thompson
16’s Team
The St Clare's 16's team delivered an impressive, undefeated performance, playing the entire day without any substitutes. Their stamina and skill set them apart as they dominated their games.
In their opening match against Chatham High School, St Clare's set the tone for the day with a powerful 25-4 victory. The team displayed excellent communication and strategy, executing their plays with precision and showcasing their ability to capitalise on scoring opportunities.
Their second game was a face-off with cross-town rivals Taree High School. Fuelled by friendly rivalry, St Clare's maintained an unbreakable defence and won the game 13-0, showing their consistency in both offensive plays and defensive strength.
The third match pitted St Clare's against Wingham High School, where they continued their winning streak with a 9-0 result. The team’s coordination and pace prevented Wingham from creating scoring chances, while St Clare's steadily added to their lead.
In their last match of the day, St Clare's faced the formidable MacKillop team in a thrilling final. Both teams brought their best energy to the field, with every player pushing hard to gain an edge. The game was an exciting, back-and-forth battle, and though neither side managed to score, the effort and determination were palpable. The match ended in a well-earned 0-0 draw, with St Clare's and MacKillop both being crowned joint winners. It was a fittingly intense and memorable conclusion to a fantastic day of competition.
Back Row (L-R): Ruby McNeil, Jocelin Martinez-Leeson, Molly Trotter, Pyper Cross, Taylor Brown, Tia Drysdale & Mia Wells
Front Row (L-R): Miller Morrissey, Ruby Polson, Lilah Earley, & Georgie O’Connor
A huge thank you goes out to Mrs Harris, Mrs Polson, Jarrah Ingram, and Hayden Robertson for their dedication in managing, supporting, and running water for the teams throughout the day. Their hard work behind the scenes made this event possible, ensuring that the players were well-supported and ready to give their best. Days like this wouldn’t be possible without their commitment and care - thank you!

3x3 Inter-High School Basketball Tournament
On Wednesday 20 November 2024 we took six teams to Port Macquarie for a 3x3 Basketball Tournament. We had three Year 7/8 teams and three Year 9/10 teams competing. All teams represented the school with pride and performed admirably throughout the day. We had four teams make the final at the end of the day, our 7/8 boys, 7/8 girls, 9/10 boys and 9/10 girls. Both our 7/8 boys and 9/10 girls were able to win their grand finals, an amazing achievement against some very tough competition.

Students should be proud of their incredible performances and respectful behaviour. We also thank our students who also volunteered to referee/score, and our dedicated staff who accompanied them on the day.

Last Friday, 15 November, saw the 2024 Year 12 Cohort graduate, with a wonderful Award Ceremony at school followed by the graduation dinner at the Winning Post Function Centre in Taree. The students looked magnificent and enjoyed the evening. Thanks to our special guests for taking the time to present some of our prestigious awards.
A huge thanks to Callam Howard who worked tirelessly from the early afternoon with photos on the riverbank all the way through to the end of the dinner at the Winning Post Function Centre. Everyone should have access to the photos by now. Thank you Cal!
Each of the graduands were recognised and received their portfolio with their report, reference and certificates as appropriate.
Thanks also to Lisa Ruprecht for her organisation, and to Earl Johnathon (Head Chef) for the wonderful meal.
The tables looked wonderful thanks to Nicole Lovern (Year 12 leader of Wellbeing) and the Year 12 students.
There are several Year 12 students who have received early offers for university already with more rounds of offers to come over the next few months.
I would like to remind anyone that is applying for EAS via UAC that the due date for all this information is:
Midnight Thursday 21 November 2024 to ensure you receive your eligibility letter in time to change your preferences for Round 2
I have already worked with quite a few students regarding this, and I am happy to help with anything else that I can. Students and/or parents can contact me by phone (65523300) or by email (karen.mccann@mn.catholic.edu.au) to arrange a suitable time to meet. This can be via Zoom if necessary.
Regarding SRS offers, I have included information directly from the UAC website as follows:
Offers
Participating institutions can use a range of criteria when making SRS offers, including your: − school’s rating of your aptitudes − Year 11 studies − Educational Access Scheme (EAS) application (if applicable).
Each institution has its own policies on determining SRS eligibility and making offers. If your application is successful, you will receive your offer by email in November.
There are two types of SRS offers: − unconditional offers (which have no further criteria for you to meet) − conditional offers (which require you to meet additional criteria).
In November, you can receive one unconditional offer and one or more conditional offers.
Unconditional offers: Accept your unconditional offer, even if it’s for your lowest course preference. You will automatically be considered for your higher preferences in later rounds. If you receive an unconditional offer to one of your higher preferences and want to be considered for all your other preferences in later rounds: − accept the offer − log in to your UAC undergraduate application, go to ‘Update Course Preferences’ and move that course down to the bottom of your course preference list or remove it entirely (as long as you have accepted the offer, you can’t lose it).
Key Dates Schools Recommendation Scheme 2024
16 September - SRS applications closed
8 November -First SRS conditional and unconditional offers released
23 December - Conditional SRS offers converted to unconditional offers
9 January 2025 - Conditional SRS offers converted to unconditional offers
Schools Recommendation Scheme 03 If you then receive an offer to a course in your new list, you can decide whether to accept it and withdraw from your original course, or not accept the new offer and keep your place in your original course.
Conditional offers: To convert your conditional offer to an unconditional offer, you must: − meet the condition/s stipulated in the offer − meet all other institution requirements for that course − include the course in your list of preferences by midnight 18 December 2024 (closing date of change of preference for December Round 2).
Unsuccessful Applicants
UAC won’t advise applicants who do not receive an offer through SRS. An unsuccessful SRS application has no effect on your UAC undergraduate application.
Year 12 results and ATAR dates:
